No full textSince the mid-nineteenth century, the city of Busto Arsizio has always been identified with its industrial reality, especially textiles, so as to deserve the nickname of "Manchester of Italy". The strong presence of the textile and related industries has created a production sector where also the shoe factory Giuseppe Borri stood out. This factory has been in almost a century of history the site of a production of fine quality footwear, on a national and international scale. Nowadays, the building, which has been in public ownership for almost twenty years, is now awaiting refurbishment, which would also involve a large area, part of the city centre. Unfortunately, many buildings linked to this historical and glorious period of the city have already been lost and the restoration of the Borri’s factory could be an opportunity to enhance a unique environment, as it is the last ancient shoe factory almost intact in the North Milan area and an industrial environment of the 19th century distinguished by an architecture in line with the Art Nouveau era in which it was built by arch. C. Crespi Balbi. In the context of Busto Arsizio, there are already two other examples of old factories recovery implemented in 1992-1997: the Cotonificio Bustese (Cotton mill of Busto), now the Museum of Textiles and Industrial Traditions and the old Molini Marzoli Massari, seat of public offices and university classrooms

No full textSi può equiparare un antico carcere civile all’architettura militare? Valutato il ruolo “difensivo”, atto al tutelare l’esterno da chi è rinchiuso al suo interno, la risposta può essere positiva. Molte strutture militari (fortezze e castelli) sono divenute nel tempo prigioni, per le loro specificità
costruttive, che sono state riprese anche in edifici più recenti. Ne è esempio l'antico carcere austriaco di Busto Arsizio, chiuso nel 1984. Ultimo edificio civile lasciato alla città dal governo austriaco, fu costruito nel 1854, con aspetto e qualità proprie di una fortezza militare. Per quanto non grande, l’edificio sorge oggi in centro alla città ed è prossimo ad un recupero.
La forte parcellizzazione funzionale che le caratterizza rende difficile il reimpiego delle antiche carceri, così come la scelta di un’idonea nuova destinazione; pertanto un loro progetto di recupero impone un accordo tra le istanze legate alla loro storia, alla tutela delle tracce della loro originaria funzione e quelle legate alla nuova, con le esigenze imposte dalle odierne norme e criteri di accessibilità.
La presente relazione s’incentra sull’opportunità offerta da un edificio storico unico nel suo genere, come il carcere di Busto e sullo studio, con finalità didattica, che ha rilevato il buono stato di conservazione delle strutture e come si possa evitare la compromissione dell’edificio su un piano costruttivo-strutturale e storico, individuando la nuova funzione più idonea, senza perderne l’essenza
Reuse of the richly significant buildings: disused churches
No full textThe paper deals with the problem of the re-use of churches that have lost their main function: the religious cult. A religious building cannot be the object of an indiscriminate adaptive re-use, disregarding the historical-material stratification, capitalizing on its location, often central in a town, and using it only as a container. The re-use of a church must not become a mere exploitation, but the opportunity to revalorize it, giving a new life that preserves its social role, without masking its historical value and original function.
Two Italian examples are presented here, among the many examples that could be listed: the first case is a correct conservative restoration with a re-use project that was able to safeguard the cultural value and the historical-material testimony. The second case urgently requires a suitable project to guarantee a new social life, before neglect and the passage of time extinguish this hope. The two examples are presented as an opportunity to invest in durable existing structures, conveying not only something tangible, but also of cultural significance, rich in history and local tradition: a genius loci that should not be ne- glected, because once lost it is not possible to recove
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
