No full textThis five-page document (including backs of pages) contain form letters created by Channing R. Mann, Class of 1916, and sent to colleagues and classmates (Springfield College) of Channing R. Mann. The first letter is dated May 1, 1962 and was sent to Springfield College Alum. On the back of this page is a hand-written note Calvin Martin, Alumni Secretary at Springfield College, saying he had sent this letter and the attachments to alum. The letter introduces the three page letter that he sent to friends as a way to share his life with his friends and inspire other members of the class of 1916 to update the college and their classmates on their life and contribute to their Alma mater. The fourth page contains a series of images from his life and family, including pictures of his brother Leslie Mann. No full textThis is the Finding Aid is for MS533 - Channing R. Mann Springfield College Records collection. Materials in this collection include correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper articles, magazine articles, and photographs created by Channing R. Mann or collected by offices in Springfield College. Materials date from 1919 to 2080, with the bulk being from 1950 through Channing’s death in 1978. Biographical materials include information gathered and created when he was awarded the Springfield College Tarbell Medallion Award 1958 and a manuscript called the “The Mann Brothers of Lincoln Nebraska” that contains information about Channing and his brother, Leslie Mann. This manuscript contains copies of photographs and documents. In addition to these, there are some materials from his involvement with AAHPERD (now SHAPE America), specifically the creation of the Channing Mann Award that was created for Council of City & County Directors. Finally, there are newspaper articles and correspondence. Most of the correspondence is between the Alumni Office of Springfield College and Channing Mann. One letter includes photographs of an alumni event in 1974 that included Springfield College President Wilbert Locklin.For more information on Channing R. Journal Price Study -Core Agricultural and Biological Journals
No full textThis report represents the first comprehensive study of journal pricing in agriculture and biology. A total of 314 journals was surveyed. The study's purpose was to investigate recent changes (1988 vs. 1994) in journal prices including publisher types: universities, commercial firms, governments (including the United Nations), and professional societies and associations. The study was conducted under the supervision of a group of faculty in agriculture and biology at Cornell University. The analysis was carried out by Wallace C. Olsen, Senior Research Associate, and the Collection Development staff at the Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell. Statistical analyses were performed by Professor Susan Holmes and Owen Chang of the Biometrics Unit, Cornell University, and by William H. Walters, bibliographer and data librarian at Mann Library. In addition, the Mann Library Advisory Committee provided helpful criticisms and comments. The primary method used to conduct this study involved electronic scanning and optical character recognition to determine word and character counts per page, as detailed in the attached report (p. 2). In every case, the data were sent to the relevant publisher for their examination; 80% of them responded with verifications, corrections, and comments.
The Executive Summary on the following pages reviews the main points of the study, including coverage, methodology, conclusions, and recommendations. The full study is given in the main report and the journal-by-journal data can be found in the supplementary tables.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
