Edward Schumacher-Matos Lecture
Born in Colombia, Schumacher-Matos was in the U.S. illegally from age 14 until age 21, when he went to court, was allowed to declare his citizenship, and joined the Army to serve in Vietnam. He was educated at Vanderbilt University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, served as a Fulbright Fellow in Japan, and as a Bi-National Commission Fellow in Spain. He also was executive director of the Spanish Institute in New York, a nonprofit dedicated to U.S.-Spanish political, economic and cultural affairs. The Robert F. Kennedy Professor for Latin American Studies at Harvard University, Schumacher-Matos is also a Shorenstein Fellow on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard\u27s Kennedy School of Government, where he teaches a graduate seminar on immigration from Latin America into the U.S. and is writing a book on the subject. Schumacher-Matos applies his rich experiences—immigrant, soldier, reporter, editor, publisher, author, ombudsman, professor, academic fellow—to his weekly, syndicated column on national and international affairs. His work has appeared in the influential journal Foreign Affairs, and he has published numerous op-ed articles, which, he says, express the value of human dignity over self-righteousness and realism over wishful thinking. His talk was the keynote address of Susquehanna University\u27s 16th annual Latino Symposium

Effect of glutathione synthesis stimulation during in vitro maturation of ovine oocytes on embryo development and intracellular peroxide content
Cysteamine and beta-mercaptoethanol supplementation of in vitro maturation (IVM) medium has been found to increase intracellular glutathione (GSH) content in oocytes and to improve embryo development and quality in several species. The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of cysteamine and beta-mercaptoethanol added during IVM of sheep oocytes on GSH synthesis and embryo development. Furthermore, we examined if cysteamine addition (hence GSH production) had an effect on the reduction of the intracellular peroxide content. We matured oocytes obtained from ovaries collected at a slaughterhouse in vitro in the presence of 0, 50, 100, and 200 microM cysteamine (Experiment 1) or with 0, 50, 100, and 200 microM beta-mercaptoethanol (Experiment 2). Following fertilization and embryo development, there was a increasing level of morula and blastocyst development in the presence of cysteamine, reaching significance in the presence of 200 microM (P < 0.05). However, beta-mercaptoethanol did not influence on the rate of embryo development. GSH levels were measured in oocytes matured in the presence or absence of 200 microM cysteamine (Experiment 3) or 50 microM beta-mercaptoethanol (Experiment 4), with or without buthionine sulfoximide (BSO), an inhibitor of GSH synthesis. Results demonstrated that for both cysteamine and beta-mercaptoethanol, intracellular GSH levels increased against control values (P < 0.01), which was abolished in the presence of BSO. Finally, we reduced intracellular peroxide levels, as measured by the relative fluorescence of the intracellular peroxide probe, carboxy-H2DCFDA, in the presence of either 200 microM cysteamine or 50 microM beta-mercaptoethanol (Experiment 5). These results demonstrate that cysteamine, but not beta-mercaptoethanol, when present during IVM, stimulates sheep embryo development; both cysteamine and beta-mercaptoethanol stimulate GSH synthesis; the increase in intracellular GSH is associated with a decrease in peroxide levels within oocytes.Daniel G. de Matos, Bianca Gasparrini, Sergio R. A vertigem das antologias: Gregório de Matos
The infinity of anthologies: Gregório de Matos thesis is a compilation with a list of covers, poems, verses, notes, themes and dates taken as data for supporting the thesis that the baroque poet constitutes himself as an artist author from the anthological practice since always. The simplicity of this assertion hardly hides the complexity of demonstrating, therefore, that, from his poetic discourse in the Portuguese colony to the canonization in Brazilian literature, there is a historical movement of reading the Gregório de Matos‘ works, which repeats itself: the leading of an author from the unapprehensible immensity to the partial unitary in books; whose cycles of anthologies emerge according to which the integrated chapters of this study are organized. An approach to the anthological practice faces the problematic of describing the story about Gregório de Matos‘ establishment as an author via crystalized poetic reception of anthological publications. The research enables the accomplishment of the general objective on understanding the reception of the poet‘s work about the reflection on different reading embodiments promoted-propitiated by anthologies. From the selected books set reading, after collecting them in bookshops and libraries, we have come to the inferential considerations on the anthological practice from the cover to the paratexts. Therefore, we take off from the general question on the work‘s reception of the sixteenth-century writer, documented by anthologists, as from the general hypothesis that the editions of the Gregorian work was conditioned by the historical determinants from each reception period. To verify this hypothesis, we observe the current anthologies in front of the reading horizon of Gregorian‘s legacy, propitiated by the poetic making of when it was published and also by the current theoretical presuppositions of art studies in the seventeenth century. This procedure is operated through a dialogue with the critical fortune dedicated to the seventeenth-century author, mainly the Haroldo de Campos and Augusto de Campos‘ criticism to the Gregorian legacy, as well as the Francisco Ivan‘s essay on baroque poetry, in addition to Adolfo Hansen and Marcello Moreira‘s research on colonial letters. The infinity of anthologies reaffirms the literature history‘s importance on aiming to review the poetic legacy‘s judgment in different periods, according to the social circumstances from each time and Gregorio de Matos‘s work understandment from romanticism to modernism, until contemporaneity. Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, Segismundo Spina, James Amado, Hélio Pólvora, Gilfrancisco, André Seffrin, Iuri Pereira, João Adolfo Hansen and Marcello Moreira are editors‘ names of Gregório de Matos‘ poetry. They are responsible for bringing the anthological cycles to life and for carrying on the seventeenth-century poetries‘ anthological practice for brazilian readers.
Atypical patterns of response and progression in the era of immunotherapy combinations
In the immunoncology era, an acceleration of tumor growth upon immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), defined as hyperprogressive disease (HPD) has been observed across different cancers. Although in non-small-cell lung cancer, most of the available evidence regarding HPD has been reported for patients treated with single agent PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors, in retrospective series a variable proportion of patients receiving ICI combinations also experienced HPD. Similarly, the shape of survival curves and the progression rates in clinical trials testing combinations of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors and anti-CTLA-4 agents suggest the occurrence of HPD. Few data are available regarding pseudoprogression upon ICI combinations. However, considering that pseudoprogression has been reported for anti-PD-1/PD-L1 agents and for CTLA-4 inhibitors separately, it is likely that it may occur also upon combinations of these two classes of drugs
