Experimental Study of the Phase Equilibria in the R-Al-Si Ternary Systems (R: Rare Earth Element) the Ho-Al-Si Isothermal Section at 500 ̊C
The effect of holmium addition to the Al-Si system has been experimentally
studied, as the isothermal section at 500 ̊C. The constitution of the alloys has
been determined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron
microprobe analysis (EDXS) and X-ray powder diffraction. The knowledge of
the phase relationships in the R-Al-Si ternary systems (R: rare earths element)
is essential to deeply understand the technological properties of the Al-Si
based alloys, that are useful in different industrial fields. In the system investigated have been identify nineteen ternary fields and twelve two phase fields.
Three ternary compounds have been found in this ternary section: τ2-Ho2Al3Si2
(mS14-Y2Al3Si2), τ4-Ho2AlSi2 (oI10-W2CoB2) and τ5-Ho6Al3Si (tI80-Tb6Al3Si).
The results obtained can be useful compared with the other known R-Al-Si
systems also for predictive purposes
The Italian trial of endovascular AAA exclusion using the Parodi endograft
PURPOSE: To report the outcome of the prospective 11-center Italian Parodi Trial using straight and tapered endografts for the endovascular exclusion of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). METHODS: From April 1994 to July 1995, 27 patients were evaluated and selected for endovascular AAA exclusion. The Parodi devices were delivered through femoral arteriotomies using 18 to 22F introducers and deployed by balloon expansion of the terminal stents. RESULTS: Of 27 cases attempted, 24 endografts (15 tube, 9 aortomonoiliac) were implanted (1 deployment and 2 access failures [11.1%] were converted). Three endoleaks (12.5%) were treated intraoperatively with covered stents, two successfully, and the third sealed within 30 days. Three (12.5%) of the 24 treated patients died in-hospital of device-(n = 2) and procedure-related (n = 1) causes; the remaining 21 patients were discharged within 8 days. Of the 8 aortomonoiliac grafts in follow-up, only 1 (12.5%) failed in the mean 23-month (range 18 to 30) follow-up: however, 4 (31%) of 13 tube graft patients were converted to surgery within 18 months. Of the 16 (66.7%) surviving endografts at 2 years, 6 (38%) showed no change in the AAA diameter, while 10 (62%) had shrunk. CONCLUSIONS: The tube graft was applicable in only about 5% of cases, and accurate endograft sizing and distal fixation were problematic. The aortomonoiliac design was not appealing to surgeons but fared better in the long term. Given the advent of newer endograft models, the Italian Parodi Trial has been terminated

On the symmetry and crystal chemistry of britholite: new structural and microanalytical data
We provide in this paper complete structural and micro-chemical characterization of two britholite samples with compositions (Mn0.04Ca4.75REE4.37Th0.72U0.12)Sigma 10.00Si5.57P0.25B0.16)Sigma O-5.98(24)(OH0.23F1.77)Sigma (2.00) (from Latium, Italy) and (Na0.98Ca2.01REE6.97)Sigma (9.96)(Si5.07P0.75)Sigma O-5.82(24)(OH0.53F1.47)Sigma (2.00) (from Los Islands, Guinea). The crystal-chemical formulae were calculated by combining electron-microprobe analyses for intermediate-Z elements (Na, Ca, Mn, Si, P), ion-microprobe analyses for low-Z (H, Li, Be, B, F) and high-Z elements (Ba, Y, REE and actinides), and high-quality (R-obs, 1.2-2.6) single-crystal structure refinements. Structure refinements indicate that the best approximation to the real symmetry is the P6(3) space group. In britholite, the lowering of symmetry with respect to the P6(3)/m space group of apatite means that the O3 and O3a atoms are no longer equivalent and allows the tetrahedron to rotate up to similar to4 degrees around the Si-O1 bond. Consequently, the O3a atom moves closer to the REE1a site. whereas the O3 atom moves farther from the REE1 site and closer to the REE2 site, which thus assumes a [7+1] coordination. The infrared spectrum of britholite from Latium shows a unique and very broad band in the OH-stretching region at 3437 cm(-1), which is consistent with the ordering of trivalent REE cations at the REE2 site. The calculated integral molar absorptivity epsilon (1), is 23600 L.mol(-1).cm(-2). A remarkable constancy in the unit-cell volume along the whole apatite-britholite compositional range is observed for values of the aggregate ionic radius at the REE sites shorter than 1.12 and longer than 1.15 Angstrom, whereas large variations are observed for intermediate values; this behavior suggests constraints due to the rigidity of the tetrahedral group, that are further enhanced at high symmetry
Magnetic resonance imaging of the breast in characterizing positive or uncertain mammographic findings
A total of 38 suspected primary (26) or recurrent (12) breast tumors underwent enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast after positive (19) or uncertain (19) mammography. Spin echo T1-weighted images before and after intravenous administration of 0.15 mmol/kg Gd-DTPA, the latter ones at 1, 3, and 5 min, were obtained to characterize the mammographic findings. When contrast enhancement was absent, the same images were also obtained at 10 min. Evident and early focal enhancement was considered as an MRI sign of malignancy. All the lesions were submitted to histological examination (seven by core-biopsy only). Mammography results were 23 true positives and 15 false positives. MRI results were 22 true positives, 13 true negatives, 2 false positives, and 1 false negative. Twelve uncertain-mammography cases became true negatives at MRI; 1 uncertain-mammography case was the only MRI false negative; 1 positive-mammography cases became true negative at MRI. Resting on this limited series of patients, MRI is confirmed as a useful imaging technique after uncertain mammography
Phase Relations of the Sm–Ni–Al Ternary System at 800 °C in the 30–100 at.% Al Region
The Sm–Ni–Al phase relationships at 800 °C have been investigated by using several well–focused experimental techniques such as X–Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), Light Optical Microscopy (LOM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Microprobe Analysis (EPMA). The isothermal section of the Sm–Ni–Al system at 800 °C was constructed according to the present experimental results. More than 50 alloys have been synthesized and characterized in the 30–100 at.% Al region. At 800 °C, 9 intermetallic phases have been confirmed, characterized and their relationships have been established. In the Al-rich corner, the presence of two ternary invariant reactions have been postulated whilst along the 16.67 at.% Sm isopleth, the presence of two structurally related extended solid solutions have been observed. The determined phase equilibria at 800 °C are discussed and compared with the isothermal section at 500 °C already reported in literature

The correct prednisone starting dose in polymyalgia rheumatica is related to body weight but not to disease severity
Abstract Background the mainstay of treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is oral glucocorticoids, but randomized controlled trials of treatment are lacking. As a result, there is no evidence from controlled studies on the efficacy of different initial doses or glucocorticoid tapering. The aim of this study is to test if 12.5 mg prednisone/day is an adequate starting dose in PMR and to evaluate clinical predictors of drug response. Methods 60 consecutive PMR patients were treated with a starting dose of 12,5 mg/day prednisone. Clinical, laboratory, and, in a subset of 25 patients, ultrasonographic features were recorded as possible predictors of response to prednisone. Remission was defined as disappearance of at least 75% of the signs and symptoms of PMR and normalization of ESR and CRP within the first month, a scenario allowing steroid tapering. Results 47/60 (78.3%) patients responded to 12.5 mg of prednisone after a mean interval of 6.6 ± 5.2 days. In univariate analysis, body weight and gender discriminated the two groups. In multivariate analysis, the only factor predicting a good response was low weight (p = 0.004); the higher response rate observed in women was explained by their lower weight. The mean prednisone dose per kg in the responders was 0.19 ± 0.03 mg in comparison with 0.16 ± 0.03 mg for non responders (p = 0.007). Conclusions 12.5 mg prednisone is a sufficient starting dose in ¾ of PMR patients. The main factor driving response to prednisone in PMR was weight, a finding that could help in the clinical care of PMR patients and in designing prospective studies of treatment.
