Integrated approach to the characterisation of historical mortars: the case study of St. Lorenzo Basil in Milan
This work deals with an integrated approach to the characterisation of historical mortars. Various techniques (Optical Microscopy on thin sections, X-Ray Diffraction, FTIR Spectroscopy, Thermal Analyses, Ionic Chromatography) were utilised in order to thoroughly analyse the mortars coming from the Basilica of St. Lorenzo (Milan, Italy), on occasion of a recent conservation work. Investigations from various, complementary points of view allowed the identification of the original components of the mortars, i. e. binder and aggregate fraction, besides the nature of degradation compounds, in order to plan the best and most respectful intervention
Gli stucchi di Giovan Battista Barberini nella Sacrestia del Collegio dei Gesuiti a Mantova
Intonaci e decorazioni. Calci, gessi e colori
Black limestone used in lombard architecture
Black limestone samples from the quarries of Varenna (Lecco, I), Cene (Bergamo, I) and Riva di Solto (Bergamo, I) and widely used in Lombard architecture have been studied in terms of mineralogical, petrographic and chemical properties in order to provide a detailed characterisation and allow an unambiguous determination of their provenance. The inorganic and organic fractions have been separated from each other, and investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, atomic absorption, Hg-porosimetry, high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The occurrence of specific mineral phases, some binary chemical patterns (Fe/Mn, Zn/Sr, Zn/Co and Na/Cd) and the carbon chain relative molecular masses has proven to be useful markers to characterise unequivocally the materials studied
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Clasificacion de los revoques multiestratificados del claustro de S. Abbondio en Como (Italia): un instrumento analitico para la arqueologia de la arquitectura
Merging Nondestructive Testing Techniques for Stucco Analysis: The Case Study of St. Abbondio in Como, Italy
Recently, a thorough restoration intervention has begun throughout the entire complex of the St.Abbondio Abbey complex in Como, Italy, beginning with documentation and condition assessment of the each element of the buildings and an examination of the stucco and plaster. The article reports the results of analysis of these materials found out in different areas of the complex (IR thermography, stratigraphic and chemical/physical testing). The results confirmed the hypothesis regarding the historic evolution of the complex and supply a range of options for the preservation interventio
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
