Nonlinear oscillations of a four-degree-of-freedom model of a suspended cable under multiple internal resonance conditions

    No full text
A four-degree-of-freedom model able to capture the main phenomena which are likely to occur in the non-planar finite dynamics of an elastic suspended cable subjected to external forcings and support motions is developed from the continuum equations. It contains two in-plane and two out-of-plane components, one symmetric and one antisymmetric. An order two multiple time scales solution is obtained for the case of primary external resonance and three simultaneous internal resonances cable at crossover frequency.[ Possible classes of steady state "planar/non-planar, unimodal/multimodal) regular motions of the system are identified and their linearized stability analysis is performed[ Some results are presented to highlight the role played by key perturbations on the onset of various classes, the rich behaviour of the system and the influence of some control parameters on the respons

The foundation charter by James II (1300), is modeled on the foundation charter of Naples by emperor Frederick II (1224), transmitted by the so-called letter-collection by Petrus de Vinea. The article focuses on the relationship between the two documents. James II chose to use the Neapolitan model, on the one hand, to invoke the tradition of his ancestor Frederick, on which he based his claims on Sicily; on the other, to find rhetorical patterns for enhancing the royal origin of the university foundation. The documents provide further knowledge on the rhetoric network based on the letters by Petrus de Vinea, which had huge influence on the development of literature and medieval political propaganda

Experimental and numerical studies of inclined cables: free and parametrically-forced vibrations

    No full text
Because of few experimental studies in the inclined cable literature, this paper is aimed at experimental modelling and investigating the linear free and nonlinear forced vibrations of sagged inclined cables, by discussing the relevant outcomes in the background of theoretical and numerical achievements. Attention is paid to the identification of cable hybrid modes due to system asymmetry, which gives rise to an avoidance phenomenon in the natural frequency spectrum, and to the investigation of some typical 3-D nonlinear dynamics involving the simultaneous parametric/external excitation due to a harmonically time-varying support movement. Large-amplitude out-of-plane/in-plane multi-modal interactions due to non-planar/planar internal resonances are experimentally observed and complemented by space-time numerical simulation of the associated, geometrically nonlinear, partial-differential equations of parametrically-forced cable motion. Overall, the experimental and numerical results highlight the fundamental linear/nonlinear dynamic characteristics of inclined cables, and the crucial role played by the asymmetry induced by cable inclination, in addition to the significant effects of cable sag and dynamic extensibility

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
