Since PEMFC in situ tests were not conclusive to determine Nafion (R) membrane degradation mechanism, ex situ aging tests were performed on Nafion (R) 112 in practical fuel cell usage conditions. The polymer chemical structure evolution was investigated by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) while its hydrophilicity, directly linked to its protonic conductivity, is established through sorption isotherms by Dynamical Vapour Sorption (DVS). Durability studies over a period of 400 days revealed membrane degradation through a modification of sulfonic acid end-groups. Formation of sulfonic anhydride (from the condensation of sulfonic acids) was strongly demonstrated by IR spectroscopy and, indirectly, by NMR. The substitution of ionic end-groups by less hydrophilic anhydrides leads to a significant decrease of water uptake and thus of its hydrophilicity. Surprisingly, kinetic study reveals that the hygrometric level accelerates this condensation reaction. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Impact of the hot-driving process on the strength and ductility of steel rivets

    Rivets were the primary fastener used to fabricate the connections of steel structures until the mid-twentieth century through a technique called hot riveting. Nowadays, engineers, architects and historic preservationists often lack information on the structural behaviour of steel riveted connections. Given the high number of parameters induced by hot riveting, the understanding and assessment of the behaviour of steel riveted connections is challenging. Therefore, we reviewed and compared historical test data with the results of experiments we performed. We tested in tension rivets machined from steel connections we fabricated. This paper addresses the impact of the hot-driving process on the strength and ductility of steel rivets. Experimental results corroborate historical test data. Rivet driving increases the tensile strength of steel rivets markedly. However, it reduces their ductility substantially. Consequently, the hot-driving process improves the shear strength of steel riveted connections. Present standards could be refined to account for the impact of the hot-driving process

    Influence of the stimulation frequency on the morphology of auditory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis

    The Rate-linked modifications observed in the Auditory Brainstem Responses (A.B.R.) in normal subjects are now well known. On the other hand they are a subject of controversy among groups studying multiple sclerosis (M.S.). 49 patients were observed in parallel studies in Milan and Creteil. The A.B.R. obtained for slow stimulus rates (11-21 Hz) were compared to fast ones (51 Hz). The A.B.R. were not significantly modified in 32% of the cases (deterioration: 21%, improvement: 11%). The variations don't seem to depend on the kind of curves involved. This phenomena can be explained by a frequency linked block of conduction of the pathological fibres, either partial or total. These data seem to be specific to demyelinating diseases. A research project is being conducted to study their specificity

    e-PWV: A Web Application for Assessing Online Carotid-Femoral Pulse Wave Velocity

    This article presents e-PWV, a web application for the determination of Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) running on a web platform called NooLib. e-PWV has been applied on signals recorded by an ultrasound system (PWVet, Aloka, Japan) and representing the arterial diameter changes in carotid and femoral sites. PWVetmeasurements were compared to PWV recorded by a tonometric technique (PWVpp, PulsePen, Italy). The study was conducted on 120 patients. We found an excellent correlation of r = 0.95 between PWVetet PWVpp(P< 0.0001; 95% confidence interval of 0.91â0.96; PWVet= 0.88 Ã PWVpp+ 0.57). We observed a small offset of - 0.33 ms- 1on the Bland-Altman plot with a limit of agreement from - 2.21 to 1.54 ms- 1. Our results suggest that e-PWV application can produce online a reliable marker of the regional aortic stiffness using an echotracking system
