Analysis of an Airfoil with Rotating Cylinder for Improved Performance

Soft and hard copy available.Among the multiple techniques used for boundary-layer control and flow separation delay, moving surface boundary-layer control is one of the promising approaches. Adding a rotating cylinder is one means of enhancing the aerodynamic performance of an airfoil, given that it serves to be an effective way in delaying stall. In this study, a rotating cylinder has been embedded in the leading edge of a NACA0024 airfoil. The wing model has been analyzed experimentally as well as numerically. The airfoil has been tested experimentally in a subsonic wind tunnel under different angles of attack, , and cylinder-to-freestream velocity ratios, . The effect of both parameters on the aerodynamic performance has been investigated, mainly through calculation of the lift coefficient, , the drag coefficient, , lift-to-drag ratio, /, and stall angle of attack, . Additionally, flow visualization has been carried out to get a perspective on the behavior of the rotating cylinder. Multiple photos have been captured where the streamlines of the flow are clear to the eye. A 2D numerical simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been carried out using ANSYS FLUENT 17.0 software. Through replicating the exact conditions of the experimental work, the CFD simulation has been successfully validated by its experimental counterpart. Results have shown a promising increase in the maximum lift coefficient from 0.98 at = 0 to 1.45 at = 6, which translates to around a 48% increase. The corresponding stall angle of attack has increased simultaneously from =15° at = 0, to around =35° at = 6. This increase of lift, however, is accompanied by a 47% increase in maximum drag coefficient. Furthermore, varying the cylinder exposure between 20% and 40% has shown an increase of 6.6% to 19.6% in the lift coefficient at = 10° and 20°, respectively.College of EngineeringDepartment of Mechanical EngineeringMaster of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME
Solution‐Processed Zinc‐Tin‐Based Ternary Oxide Electron Transport Layers for Planar Perovskite Solar Cells
No full textPerovskite solar cells (PSCs) have acquired popularity owing to their high efficiency, ease of fabrication, and affordability. In this context, the development of electron transport layers (ETLs) for highly efficient planar photovoltaic devices has received considerable attention. This study investigates the potential of zinc-tin-based ternary metal oxide ETLs for application in planar PSCs. Solution-processed methods are used to fabricate crystalline zinc stannate (Zn2SnO4), amorphous zinc-tin oxide (ZTO), and Zn2SnO4/ZTO-based bilayer films, and their structural, morphological, and optoelectronic properties are thoroughly studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show enhanced crystallite size and better surface morphology of perovskite films deposited on bilayer ETL. Photoluminescence (PL) studies and Hall effect measurements reveal superior charge extraction, improved charge carrier mobility (21.84 cm2 V-1 s-1) and enhanced n-type conductivity in the bilayer ETL. Moreover, contact angle analysis of perovskite layer deposited on bilayer ETL shows increased resistance to moisture erosion (52.20°), which is particularly significant given the detrimental effects moisture can have on the performance of PSCs
Barriers To Mentorship For Academic Returnees: Experiences From Pakistan Higher Education
Full text linkMentoring of faculty is one important aspect in higher education especially for countries investing in training faculty abroad. The study explores the key challenges that young faculty are facing and the expectations following return from doctoral studies abroad. The participants of this study were doctoral graduates who completed studies in UK and USA and working in the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. A grounded theory approach was used in the theoretical development of the categories of participant perspectives concerning their constraints and expectations. Using both primary data and secondary data from in-depth interviews, participant experiences were explored and analysed. The findings reveal challenges faced by young academics returning to Pakistan. Some of the difficulties are emerging due to the infant higher education system characterised by the lack of a research culture and at a time when academic roles are experiencing change. Remedial mechanisms in form of further mentoring by foreign faculty, installation of research infrastructure and restructuring of existing systems are needed to strengthen research in Pakistan higher education system
Sustainability: a new manufacturing paradigm
No full textRecently, many industries adopted lean manufacturing philosophy to improve efficiency through reducing waste for maximization of profit. Most of the manufacturers have benefited the implementation of lean manufacturing through process effectiveness. However, despite of all its effectiveness in the production process, manufacturing industry is facing a real challenge instigated by the stakeholders (i.e. Customers, policy makers, regulatory authorities and society). Stakeholders are consistently pressurizing manufacturers to integrate the social and environmental factor within their production process to protect society and the environment from the negative effects of the manufacturing process, as a result manufacturing process experience continuous adaptation. This adaptation caused technological and procedural shifts, this significantly alter the fundamental manufacturing concepts. Current study provide the basic alterations in the fundamental principles of the green manufacturing paradigm, this adaptation ultimately leads to the new manufacturing paradigm of Sustainable manufacturing. Sustainable manufacturing is a broader concept of manufacturing focused on the integration of social, environmental and economic factors in manufacturing procedures
The Life of Hedonism from the Perspective of Al-Tabari and Sayyid Muhammad Rashid Rida (Comparative Study of Tafsir Surah Ali Imran: 14)
Full text linkThe Qur'an not only tells us about prohibitions and commands, but also talks about the problems of the lives of previous people. Among them are illustrated by the human lifestyle that prioritizes pleasure and physical luxury. Based on the hedonistic lifestyle, it certainly has 'ibrah that can be learned if an in-depth study of the life of hedonism is carried out. The author wants to examine the life of hedonism from the perspective of al-Tabari and Sayyid Muhammad Rasyid Rida. This paper uses a qualitative approach that is classified into library research with library materials, especially Jami' al-Bayan fi Ta'wil Ayi al-Qur'an and Tafsir al-Manar and uses comparative data analysis. The conclusion in this paper is that the life of hedonism according to al-Tabari and Sayyid Muhammad Rasyid Rida is an excessive human lifestyle and indulges in lust in reaching the pleasures of the world. The similarities and differences according to these two mufassirs are almost the same in interpreting the life of hedonism in surah Ali Imran verse 14 that Allah SWT makes beautiful in human views of the pleasures of the world, namely women, children, large assets of gold and silver, selected horses, livestock and rice fields. Developing domain-specific mashup tools for end users
Full text linkThe recent emergence of mashup tools has refueled research on end user development, i.e., on enabling end users without programming skills to compose own applications. Yet, similar to what happened with analogous promises in web service composition and business process management, research has mostly focused on technology and, as a consequence, has failed its objective. Plain technology (e.g., SOAP/WSDL web services) or simple modeling languages (e.g., Yahoo! Pipes) don't convey enough meaning to non-programmers. We propose a domain-specific approach to mashups that "speaks the language of the user", i.e., that is aware of the terminology, concepts, rules, and conventions (the domain) the user is comfortable with. We show what developing a domain-specific mashup tool means, which role the mashup meta-model and the domain model play and how these can be merged into a domain-specific mashup meta-model. We apply the approach implementing a mashup tool for the research evaluation domain. Our user study confirms that domain-specific mashup tools indeed lower the entry barrier to mashup development.
