Impact of decree 230 on the educational system
Research is one of the main objectives of education and through it new pedagogical strategies can be proposed in order to improve all teaching and learning processes. As a result, society can be transformed and at the same time the quality of living of those who are part of it. My goal is to do a qualitative, descriptive and interpretative study about the implementation of Decree 230 which the Colombian government introduced and its effects on the educational system. Chapter 2, in particular, drew my attention, because it regulates the process for students evaluation and grade promotion. This Decree was put in force in February, 2002. The educational community overall including parents, students, and teachers has seen the impact on the academic level, evaluation and grade promotion process and have expressed a need for change. Because of their direct, personal experience with the effects of the Decree, the three groups just mentioned were the ones I chose for this study. In addition, the three belong to a public school in Bogotá where the study was done. I have been aware of the controversy surrounding Decree 230 since the very moment it was put into practice from my own personal experience and conversations with other teachers. In these conversations teachers complained about the policy and the effects it had on the field of education. Thus a personal interest led me to study this branch more deeply
Giving Sense to the Practice of the Social Capacities of Students in the Classroom of English as a Foreign Language Classes
The present paper reports on the results of a descriptive case study carried out with a group of sixth graders at a public school in Bogotá. The project aimed to illustrate the insights into the use of stories based on values in an EFL classroom, to analyze the way in which students reflected and put into practice social capabilities concerning their own world, answering the main question: How do sixth graders make sense of the practice of social values in the EFL classroom? Qualitative research and the grounded theory allowed the analysis of the phenomena in its natural setting, where the instruments used for the triangulation process (teacher’s field notes, students´ questionnaires and artifacts) revealed how social capabilities represented the opportunity to students learn how to live; in other words, how to be. From data, the category “listening as a social attribute” and the patterns “respect as the base to educate” and “tolerance to coexist in a community” emerged to illustrate the school’s duty, where students make sense about their roles as students and citizens, giving response to educate whole people as the main challenge that society faces
Delving into Colombian EL teachers’ identities from their voices in neoliberal times: A narrative study
This paper centers on a narrative study that delved into English language teachers’ voices in regard to their verbalized identity (re)construction when engaged in a reflexive and dialogical space in which storytelling was employed. This narrative study emerged from problematizing the principles, underpinning institutes for work and human development, which are rooted in the current national bilingual program. As a result, the adopted and adapted neoliberal discourses of the above-mentioned program and the legal measurements that strengthen them, allowed me to consider English language teachers have something to say and do about themselves in regard to ideologically-laden discourses fostered by the national bilingual program that are materialized at a private language institute in Bogotá. This, in turn, guided me to invite English language teachers to participate in a reflexive and dialogical space with the purpose of collecting their stories in order to account for the (re)construction of their identities through their own voices. EL teachers’ stories were collected through narrative interviews that were transcribed and analyzed from a socio-critical perspective using short story analysis (Barkhuizen, 2016). Findings suggest that, as opposed to powerful circulating discourses that have positioned EL teachers as emotionless, uncritical, and docile non-human beings that perpetuate neoliberal agendas, they claim their identity as human educators who attempt to contest a dehumanizing model between vertical and horizontal tensions with a humanistic dimensional agenda
Exploring ninth-graders’ perceptions on gender affairs through group activities in an EFL classroom
Awakeninig students interests through written dialogue journals
This qualitative case study describes the use of written dialogue journals (WDJs) in order to create a bridge of communication in which students were able to express themselves freely about their lives inside and outside scholl. The participants were a group of 7 th graders, in which eight were selected randomly. This study took place during tha academic year of 2003. Without taking into account the participants' literacy level, we permitted participation in this written communication activity to a certain extent even from the first day of class, this was because students' WDJ entries focused on meaning and interest on students' writings rather than form. This research revealed that the use of WDJs promoted mutual communication and students' implicit grammar correction. It enhanced the students? selection of different writing topics that they felt closely related to their lives. It was concluded that WDJs were an alternative form of written communication, and that they could be very useful instruments to promote written practice as well as to improve students? writin in a foreign language classroom
Characterizing Gender Construction in the L2 Classroom
This research project considers the reasons why gender issue are an important topic in educational research. This paper is a descriptive and interpretive study whose aim is to explore how gender construction is characterized in the L2 classroom, through social interaction while working on task-based activities.
I identified through class observations that students had different points of view on gender competition. In order to understand gender construction, I implemented a Task-Based Learning approach based on debates as pedagogical intervention, and a questionnaire which showed me the students‟ points of view and their thoughts.
Further, I used Feminist and Poststructuralist Discourse Analysis (FPDA) procedures in order to identify the interactions where students made explicit the gender concept during classroom activities and questionnaires. Findings suggested that students resist the traditional concept of gender; i.e., male-female. The categories found, explain the mechanisms used by students to construct a gender
Sociocultural Simulation: Experiential Language Learning in the Local EFL Classrooms
Local students seem to be in need of a more practical and lively way to learn in the EFL classrooms.
This project is intended to satisfy such need by introducing the sociocultural simulation as an strategy
able to offer a more real language learning experience. Through the integration of the target language
(English) and its cultural component (US as a model) towards its immediate practice in a modeling of a
real-world context (simulation). An action research was first applied and then designed towards a pedagogical intervention
implemented in two schools in a seventh grade and an eleventh grade. The former had the opportunity
to experience the recess-time game played by schoolers of their same age in the United States called
Dodgeball. The latter practiced their business skills by organizing an American seasonal gathering
called Fall Gathering. The students´ and researcher´s discourses were collected through journals and
video transcripts and inductively analyzed with the expectation of discovering supportive evidence
about the impact the sociocultural simulation may have in the students´language learning.
The results of the research suggests that an important impact is evident in two main findings. Firstly, its
liveliness is successfully brought into the public EFL classrooms and secondly, it promotes the students
self awareness of their own process and the understanding of the culture-language relation towards the
language learning enhancement. The study concludes that when the learners are offered with lively
strategies such as simulations that are enriched with the language-culture relation component, the
language classroom experience is improved and pedagogical benefits such as innovation and
effectiveness become part of the results
The colombian deaf community and the discourse of language as a human right: problematizing an inclusion-exclusion dichotomy
With the expectation of raising social awareness about the invisibility and general disregard for diverse linguistic communities in Colombia, this research explored the official discourse of language as a human right of the Colombian MEN and UNESCO about its positioning of the Colombian Deaf Community (CDC). Issues associated with the dichotomy of inclusion-exclusion of CDC as a linguistic minority were discussed from a theoretical perspective. Such discussion was in the light of the theoretical constructs of language as a human right and the construction of the Other (Foucault, 2008; Riggins, 1997; Phillipson & Skutnabb-Kangas, 2017a). The study used principles of Fairclough & Fairclough’s (2012) CPDA model, which in turn was framed within the qualitative and interpretive paradigms. The focus of analysis was on two official documents: National Ten-year Education Plan 2016–2026 (Colombian MEN) and Education in a Multilingual World (UNESCO); research methodology and data analysis followed Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1985, 1996; Flowerdew, 2013) at one initial and descriptive stage in preparation for a second interpretive and a third explicative stage of CPDA (Fairclough & Fairclough, 2012). Findings revealed that the inclusion-exclusion dichotomy is characterized by the continuous dual re-construction of the CDC in official and non-official discourses, as well as the continuous struggles in the construction of language (as a human right)

EFL ninth graders’ positioning about bullying in their communities through written life stories in a public school in Bogotá
(Cohen & Crabtree, 2006).Abstract This study was carried out with EFL ninth graders at one of the biggest public schools in Bogotá. It is located in an area which presents particular social issues together with bullying issues. That is why I proposed the following research question: What do ninth graders’ written life stories portray about their positioning in regard to bullying as a social issue in their communities? This is based upon a view of discourse that Fairclough (2003) presents as an element of social life to represent different aspects of the world, which are drawn from a text. Such view relates to the ways adolescents face L2 literacy development within their social contexts, being schools one of those contexts (Moje, 2006) where there are opportunities to (re)construct meaningful life experiences. The focus in this thesis is on the experiences lived by the participants as related to the social issue of bullying. Those participants’ experiences took the shape of life stories that they wrote during one year. In order to analyze the participants’ life stories, I selected a model for narrative analysis suggested by Barkhuizen. (2004) The unit of analysis in this thesis was the specific declarative statements (Hallyday 1994), which made me conscious of the participants’ positions (Davies & Harré, 1990) concerning manifestations of bullying.
