    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Actualmente, el control de las moscas de los botones florales del maracuyá amarillo Dasiops inedulis Steyskal y de la pitaya amarilla, D. saltans Townsend (Diptera: Lonchaeidae), se basa en aplicaciones de insecticidas de amplio espectro que contaminan el medio ambiente y afectan negativamente la entomofauna benéfica (p.ej., enemigos naturales y polinizadores). Los objetivos principales de este estudio fueron la evaluación de un cebo tóxico de origen natural y la búsqueda de parasitoides para el control de las moscas de los botones florales del maracuyá amarillo y la pitaya amarilla, D. inedulis y D. saltans, respectivamente, en el Valle del Cauca, Colombia. En el presente estudio se colectaron cuatro parasitoides de D. inedulis, i.e., uno de tipo larva-pupa identificado como Utetes anastrephae (Viereck) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), y tres parasitoides de pupas identificados como Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae Rondani, Spalangia sp. (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) y Aganaspis sp. (Hymenoptera: Figitidae). No se recuperaron parasitoides de D. saltans. En el campo se observaron daños ocasionados por insectos depredadores sobre pupas centinelas de D. inedulis y D. saltans, y en cultivos de maracuyá amarillo se encontró la presencia de una larva de Chrysopidae (Neuroptera) relacionada con los daños. Se evaluó la efectividad de un parasitoide generalista de pupas de dípteros, P. vindemmiae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), contra poblaciones de D. inedulis y D. saltans, en cultivos de maracuyá amarillo y pitaya amarilla en el Valle del Cauca. La capacidad de desplazamiento de P. vindemmiae se evaluó colocando bolsas de tul con pupas centinelas de Dasiops spp. en el suelo a 0, 3, 5, 7 y 10 m de distancia desde el punto de liberación de P. vindemmiae. Las bolsas de liberación de P. vindemmiae se colocaron a la altura de los botones florales, de las cuales emergieron aproximadamente 300 adultos del parasitoide. Cada bolsa de pupas centinelas contenía 20 pupas de Dasiops spp., las cuales se removieron después de dos semanas para evaluar el nivel de parasitismo y relación de sexos del parasitoide. Se observaron diferencias en el parasitismo en las dos localidades, con un máximo del 12% y 50% en Toro y Palmira respectivamente. Pupas de Dasiops spp. de 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 días se expusieron al parasitoide en condiciones de laboratorio y se observó que el mayor parasitismo ocurre sobre pupas de dos días. Del material recuperado del campo se encontró que la proporción de macho: hembra es de 1:1. Se realizaron experimentos con un cebo tóxico de origen natural a base de Saccharopolyspora spinosa en los municipios de Palmira y Toro, en el departamento del Valle del Cauca, destacándose como una nueva alternativa para el control de D. inedulis en maracuyá amarillo, ya que en las dos localidades mantuvieron los niveles de daño por debajo del manejo convencional del agricultor y el testigo absoluto. Se provee una lista de enemigos naturales de D. inedulis tomada mediante muestreos de botones florales de maracuyá, uso de pupas centinelas, e información en la literatura científica. Para el control de la mosca del botón floral del maracuyá, D. inedulis, se propone una estrategia de manejo integrado de plagas que le permitirán al productor mantener las poblaciones de D. inedulis reguladas con diferentes herramientas, i.e., enemigos naturales que se pueden incorporar en diferentes etapas de la fenología de D. inedulis, uso de cebos tóxicos de baja toxicidad, recolección de botones con síntomas de daño, y monitoreo con el uso de trampas McPhail cebadas con proteína hidrolizada, interviniendo en diferentes estados de desarrollo, cortando ciclos y disminuyendo así futuras generaciones del insecto.//Abstract. The control of the flower-bud flies of yellow passionfruit Dasiops inedulis Steyskal and yellow pitaya, D. saltans Townsend (Diptera: Lonchaeidae), is based on applications of broad-spectrum insecticides that pollute the environment and adversely affect the beneficial insect fauna (eg., natural enemies and pollinators). The main objectives of this study were the evaluation of a naturally occurring toxic bait and search for parasitoids to control the flower-bud flies of yellow passion fruit and yellow pitaya, D. inedulis and D. saltans, respectively, in the State of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. In the present study, four parasitoids of D. inedulis, i.e., one larva-pupa type parasitoid identified as Utetes anastrephae (Viereck) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and three parasitoids of pupae, identified as Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae Rondani, Spalangia sp. (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) and Aganaspis sp. (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) were collected. No parasitoids were recovered from D. saltans. Damage by insect predators on sentinel pupae of D. inedulis and D. saltans was observed in the field, and on yellow passion fruit crops, a chryopid larva (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) was found associated with damaged sentinel pupae. We evaluated the effectiveness of a generalist parasitoid pupae of Diptera, P. vindemmiae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), against populations of D. inedulis and D. saltans in yellow passion fruit crops and yellow pitaya in Valle del Cauca. The dispersion capacity of P. vindemmiae was evaluated by placing mesh bags with Dasiops spp. sentinel pupae in the soil at 0, 3, 5, 7 and 10 m away from the release point of P. vindemmiae. Release bags of P. vindemmiae were placed at the height of the flower buds; about 300 adult parasitoids emerged from each release bag. Twenty sentinel pupae of Dasiops spp. were put into a mesh bag, and were removed after two weeks to assess the level of parasitism and sex ratio of the parasitoid. There were differences in parasitism rates in the two locations, with a maximum of 12% and 50% in Toro and Palmira, respectively. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 days old Dasiops spp. pupae were exposed to the parasitoid under laboratory conditions and it was found that the highest parasitism of pupae occurs on two days old pupae. On field recovered pupae, the male: female ratio was 1:1. Experiments were performed with a toxic bait based on Saccharopolyspora spinosa in the municipalities of Palmira and Toro, in the department of Valle del Cauca, standing out as a new alternative for the control of D. inedulis in yellow passion fruit, as in the two localities, damage levels remained below the conventional management of the farmer and the absolute control. A list of recorded natural enemies of D. inedulis on passionfruit flower-buds, collected by the use of sentinel pupae, and information in the scientific literature is provided. For the control of the passionfruit flower-bud fly, D. inedulis, an integrated pest management strategy that will allow the producer to maintain populations of D. inedulis under control with different tools, i.e., natural enemies that can be incorporated at different stages of the phenology of D. inedulis, use of low-toxic baits, collection of flower-buds with signs of damage, and monitoring using McPhail traps baited with hydrolyzed protein, intervening at different stages of development, cutting cycles and decreasing future generations of the insect is proposed.Maestrí
