Elevating communities: high-rise social condenser for urban renewal in Wadi Al-Qamar - Alexandria
Alexandria, a Mediterranean city with a population of 5.5 million and a growth rate of 1.91%, urgently requires sustainable urban solutions amidst climate change. This thesis explores optimizing land use in high-density neighborhoods through vertical green social condensers, emphasizing wellbeing in urban design to enhance resilience and community cohesion.
The case study of Wadi Al-Qamar, west of Alexandria, illustrates strong social bonds and cleanliness despite minimal government oversight. Originally residential, Wadi Al-Qamar has evolved into an industrial zone with four major factories, which both isolates and fortifies the community. However, inadequate infrastructure poses hazards, and essential services are insufficient, necessitating residents to travel downtown for basic needs.
The thesis aims to address the challenges of the informal neighborhood without demolishing existing structures, while conserving buildings, traditions, and cultures. By integrating innovative urban design concepts, the project seeks to enhance community engagement and environmental sustainability.
With the global population projected to reach 10.4 billion by the mid-2080s, coastal cities face escalating risks from sea level rise and climate-induced flooding. To mitigate overpopulation and pollution, this thesis proposes vertical social condensers in dense urban areas, integrating green spaces to improve air quality and alleviate overcrowding. The research emphasizes innovative space utilization and construction methods tailored to address urban challenges, prioritizing community wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
By focusing on wellbeing in urban design, including access to green spaces and improved living conditions, this study aims to provide a model for sustainable development in coastal cities like Alexandria, fostering resilience and enhancing quality of life amidst ongoing urbanization and climate impacts

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
