Feminist Objectivity in Philosophy of Science: a Crossroad between Politics and Epistemology
No full textL'argomento della tesi è l'oggettività scientifica in filosofia della scienza, dimostrando esplicitamente l'importanza di uno sguardo femminista nelle nostre pratiche epistemiche nelle comunità scientifiche. Affronto questo scopo spiegando come l'oggettività scientifica è intesa nell'epistemologia femminista e presentando il mio progetto chiamato contextual standpoint theory, nato dalla combinazione di due famosi filoni dell'epistemologia femminista, la standpoint theory e l'empirismo contestuale. Ritengo che se considerati insieme, i due approcci permettono di ottenere un quadro esauriente del concetto di oggettività scientifica, perché la loro combinazione copre un’analisi sia dei temi epistemologici suggeriti da una prospettiva femminista e sia dei processi con cui condurre e produrre una conoscenza che possa dirsi oggettiva. Ciò culminerà nella considerazione dell’oggettività staccata dalla definizione di oggettività ‘neutrale’ o ‘libera dai valori’ (value-free), e raccoglierà una serie di caratteristiche che rimodellano l’ideale epistemico da perseguire proprio perché arricchite da queste prospettive femministe. Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Per una epistemologia politica femminista: diversità da preservare ed expertise
No full textLa crescente sfiducia nei confronti delle figure degli esperti e delle istituzioni scientifiche e lo scetticismo sulla validità della conoscenza da questi prodotta sono temi centrali tanto in riflessioni epistemologiche che politiche ed offrono un collegamento con l’epistemologia femminista, disciplina che si è interrogata in precedenza su questi temi, seppur guidata da propositi differenti.
Una delle strategie per riflettere e rimettere al centro dell’attenzione lo statuto dell’expertise nella società contemporanea è ripercorrere, da un lato, le critiche femministe che fanno capo all’ingiustizia epistemica [Fricker (2007), Tuana (2007) e, dall’altro, usare le strategie proposte dalla standpoint theory [Harding (1986), Collins (1990), Rose (2013), Smith (2004)] per sopperire a questa ingiustizia. Le riflessioni sull’ingiustizia epistemica svelano come l’aura sacrale che circonda il ruolo dell’esperto è talvolta condizionata da fattori sociali e politici che minano la credibilità epistemica attribuita a un agente epistemico, indipendentemente dalla sua effettiva conoscenza. La standpoint theory, condividendo queste critiche, le capovolge a proprio vantaggio quando sostiene, come punto di partenza per una conoscenza meno parziale e più trasparente, di partire proprio da quei soggetti che normalmente soffrono di ingiustizia o ignoranza epistemica. Non includere certi gruppi sociali quindi, non solo è un’ingiustizia sociale ma è anche un errore cognitivo in quanto il loro punto di vista ignorato potrebbe illuminare aspetti della ricerca non immediatamente visibili a chi beneficia, inconsapevolmente o meno, di un ambiente sessista o razzista.
Nell’ultima parte del paper, applico queste riflessioni in epistemologia femminista allo studio della composizione delle comunità accademiche e suggerisco che esse possono essere migliorare se si seguono tre step: democrazia, inclusione e collaborazione.
Queste linee guida servono a promuovere un dialogo critico fra le prospettive capace di ottenere una conoscenza meno parziale e di assicurare anche giusta rappresentazione ai gruppi sociali esclusi dalle comunità scientifiche
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
