Dementia - From the standpoint of the relative

    No full text
In the following paper we seek to examine how relatives to family members with dementia, are influenced by the disease in their daily lives. Furthermore, we seek to examine the influence from the standpoint of the relative and through their view on how they conduct their everyday lives. The theoretical basis for this study stems from the work of Klaus Holzkamp, Ole Dreier and Family Caregiving Alliance. To analyze how the relatives everyday living has been influenced by their demented family members, we’ve been given greatly detailed descriptions via conducting semi- structured interviews with the relatives. We’ve been in contact with the interviewed relatives afterwards to verify our analysis and conclusion, and thus further strengthening the validity of the paper. The analysis is structured in three sections which are ‘the relative’s everyday life’, ‘the relative’s choice of action’ and ‘the relative’s role as caregivers’. The study concludes that relatives to family members with dementia, are influenced by the disease in their daily lives. To what degree it is influenced, depends on how close a relationship they have with the demented, what life conditions they are subject to, what ethical considerations arose in the course of the disease and what aspect of the demented family members life the relative has chosen to become a part o

Emotionally indebted:Governing the Unemployed People in an Affective Economy

This book explores the lived experience of unemployment from a critical social psychological perspective. It connects the condition of unemployment to governance structures and wider societal issues, such as the labor market tendencies of precarity and enterprise culture. Based on qualitative data collected in Denmark and America, the book gives voice to unemployed people to critically discuss both the intended and unintended consequences of active labor market measures, as well as the frequent moral evaluations that surround unemployment. The author explores how unemployed people make sense of and deal with the demands and activities required by activation policies or ALMPs, which tend to make the job seekers responsible for finding a solution to their condition. Building from the subjective experience of unemployment, it maps the complex emotional demands on jobseekers who should feel shame and self-blame but also display motivation and passion on the labor market. Presenting emotions and feelings as pivotal instruments of the governmentality of worklessness, this book addresses the lack of critical discussion and research into the unemployment experience and offers a useful, provocative perspective for students, scholars, and practitioners alike in social psychology, social policy, economic policy, and related disciplines

Video application as a recruitment strategy - in a critical theoretical perspective

    No full text
This thesis aims to examine possibilities and limitations, which the use of video application in the context of recruitment can lead to, in relation to the companies ”Salling Group” and “JYSK”, and their strategic considerations connected within this. The empirical material is based on semi-structured interviews with HR representatives from both companies. The approach in processing the empirical data is based upon the philosophical hermeneutics, resulting in our interpretations being visible throughout the results of our thesis. The field of study is elucidated from a critical theoretical standpoint with an analytical framework that is based on Richard Sennett's concept of "flexibility", Henrik Kaare Nielsen's presentation of identity dynamics in the late modern society and Hartmut Rosa's theory on the increasing acceleration of society. Based on the obtained knowledge about corporate strategic considerations behind video recruitment, some of the project's key conclusions focuses on, video application being a strategic screening tool, that filters the non-preferred applicants out early in the application phase. Furthermore, the video recruitment form provides resource savings and enables an insight into the applicant, which the written application does not fulfill. In relation to the implementation of technology in worklife, it shows that the technologically adaptive applicant is favored over the less flexible applicant upon which an exclusion perspective appears

Unemployed academics after graduation: A critical social psychological study of recent academic graduates' mental well-being and self-perception during the period of unemployment

This thesis examines how recently graduated academics experience the following period of unemployment, with a particular focus on their self-perception and mental well-being. This is done through a qualitative, interview-based study, exploring how individuals navigate this period between graduation and future employment. The theoretical perspectives draw on Sara Ahmed, Hartmut Rosa, and Dawn Norris, in the analyzes on how unemployment is not merely a temporary economic circumstance, but an affective and identity-shaping experience.Findings indicate that the informants perceive unemployment as a mental state marked by shame, alienation, and conflict in self-perception. In this, the absence of recognition, structure, and prospects for the future, undermines the individuals’ sense of identity and mental well-being. The study further shows how unemployed graduates find themselves internalizing societal expectations of productivity, ultimately resulting in feelings of personal failure in the transition period from student to worker. Additionally, the thesis critically examines and discuss the structural and political frameworks of the Danish employment system. It finds that current policies reinforce an individualized logic of responsibility in the period of unemployment, which intensifies affective distress rather than improve it.In conclusion this thesis argues for a rethinking of the state of unemployment after graduation, proposing a more nuanced understanding that looks beyond the economic aspect, but heightens the acknowledgement in its psychological, social, and existential consequences. Ultimately, it calls for a political and cultural shift in how we conceptualize and support individuals in the period of unemployment

By whom you recruit, I will tell you who you are: A qualitative study of recruitment as emotional labor

An increased focus on a more inviting approach in the new recruitment landscape has resulted in new logics that have evolved the personality-based job market with a technological aspect. The new logics set different demands to the recruiting process in the pursuit of 'the right candidate'. The combination of objective and emotional approaches in the recruitment process leads to a paradox. Automating recruiting methods are to quality assure an efficient process, however, may lead to a worse choice of recruitment on the culturally organizational fit. In this side of the job market, personality is the key demand. Through three semi-structured interviews of three recruiters from Maersk, Carelink and Academic Work, their recruitment processes are analyzed and compared. In combination with Hochschild’s (1979, 1983) terminologies, this paper examines the level emotional labor required, and how the phenomenon of the ‘the right candidate’ is reflected in the recruiters’ recruitment processes. With the inclusion of emotional labor in the recruitment process, the recruiters perform an affective subjectivation, which supports them in the choice of recruitment by creating a subjective narrowing of ‘right candidates’. The findings of the paper indicate that context is a key element in recruitment processes. The right candidate as well as the right recruiter are both formed and form each other as ideal types in their interaction. Furthermore, it is concluded that automated recruitment processes do not necessarily result in emotion-free practice<br/

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
