Whispering-gallery mode micro-kylix resonators
Owing to their ability to confine electromagnetic energy in ultrasmall dielectric volumes, micro-disk, ring and toroid resonators hold interest for both specific applications and fundamental investigations. Generally, contributions from various loss channels within these devices lead to limited spectral windows (Q-bands) where highest mode Q-factors manifest. Here we describe a strategy for tuning Q-bands using a new class of micro-resonators, named micro-kylix resonators, in which engineered stress within an initially flat disk results in either concave or convex devices. To shift the Q-band by 60nm towards short wavelengths in flat micro-disks a 50% diameter reduction is required, which causes severe radiative losses suppressing Q's. With a micro-kylix, we achieve similar tuning and even higher Q's by two orders of magnitude smaller diameter modification (0.4%). The phenomenon relies on geometry-induced smart interplay between modified dispersions of material absorption and radiative loss-related Q-factors. Micro-kylix devices can provide new functionalities and novel technological solutions for photonics and micro-resonator physics. (C) 2009 Optical Society of Americ
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Homodyne Detection of Free Carrier Induced lectro-Optic Modulation in Strained Silicon esonators
In the last few years, strained silicon has been proposed as a potential electro-optic material, paving the way to the realization of ultrafast modulators which are compatible with the CMOS fabrication technology. The linear Pockels effect has been used for measuring the magnitude of the induced components, with values reaching hundreds of . ecently, it has been shown that these values could have been overestimated due to the contribution of free carriers to the electro-optic modulation. In this work, this hypothesis is validated by a series of experimental observations, which are performed on strained silicon racetrack resonators. These are fabricated with different waveguide widths and orientations. We use a low frequency (KHz) homodyne detection technique to monitor the electro-optic response of the devices. The results indicate that the modulation strength is not dependent on the waveguide geometry or direction. A lot of anomalies are encountered in the device response, which are not compatible with a modulation mechanism of origin. To this purporse, a theory based on the nonlinear injection of free carriers inside the waveguide is presented. This is able to account for all the observed anomalies
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Intermodal four-wave mixing in silicon waveguides
In this work, we report the modeling and the experimental demonstration of intermodal spontaneous as well as stimulated four-wave mixing (FWM) in silicon waveguides. In intermodal FWM, the phase-matching condition is achieved by exploiting the different dispersion profiles of the optical modes in a multimode waveguide. Since both the energy and the wave vectors have to be conserved in the FWM process, this leads to a wide tunability of the generated photon wavelength, allowing us to achieve a large spectral conversion. We measured several waveguides that differ by their widths and demonstrate large signal generation spanning from the pump wavelength (1550 nm) down to 1202 nm. A suited setup evidences that the different waves propagated indeed on different order modes, which supports the modeling. Despite observing a reduced efficiency with respect to intramodal FWM due to the decreased modal overlap, we were able to show a maximum spectral distance between the signal and idler of 979.6 nm with a 1550 nm pump. Our measurements suggest the intermodal FWM is a viable means for large wavelength conversion and heralded photon sources
Probing the Spontaneous Emission Dynamics in Si-Nanocrystals-Based Microdisk Resonators
As a possible cavity quantum electrodynamical system, unlike III-V quantum dots, Si-NCs are not considered ideal emitters for emission rate enhancement observations (Purcell effect). Here, we report on direct measurements of spontaneous emission rate enhancement of Si-NCs embedded in a whispering-gallery mode resonator at room temperature. Using time-resolved microphotoluminescence experiments, we demonstrate important lifetime reductions (similar to 70%) for Si-NCs coupled to cavity modes with respect to uncoupled ones. Comparing experiments with the theoretical Purcell enhancement in a bad emitter regime, we estimate effective linewidths of similar to 10 meV through which Si-NC emitters are coupled to cavity photons. Finally, our study provides an alternative method for the estimation of subnatural linewidths of quantum dots at room temperature
