Embeddedness, Ownership Mode and Dynamics, and the Performance of MNE Subsidiaries
Whereas researchers have provided profound empirical evidence for the direct relationship between subsidiary embeddedness and subsidiary performance, we intend to investigate the dependence of this relationship on firm-specific contingency factors. Specifically, we propose that the effects of internal and external embeddedness on performance are contingent on ownership mode and the past change of such mode. We find a positive moderating effect of changes in ownership mode on the relationship between external and internal embeddedness and subsidiary performance. The empirical results support our reasoning that dynamic learning routines realized in situations of organizational change positively affect the efficacy for external and internal resource access for subsidiaries. The contingency perspective of our study provides further support for IB research to avoid one-size-fits all statements but rather to consider the volatile internal and external parameters that determine MNEs' business. Distance in international business studies: concept, costs, and value
Distance is a central theme in international business (IB) research. A simple search for the word “distance” in the abstracts and titles of papers published in five leading IB journals over the period 1990–2015 illustrates the importance of the topic: overall, 341 papers have addressed the phenomenon, either in their titles or abstracts (International Business Review – IBR: 89, Journal of International Business Studies – JIBS: 99, Journal of International Management – JIM: 44, Journal of World Business – JWB: 59, Management International Review – MIR: 50). In other words, two annual volumes of each of the above journals could be filled solely with papers on the topic of distance. However, our knowledge of distance, in terms of conceptual specification and consequences for IB practice, is incomplete and sometimes ambiguous. In this research volume, we therefore analyze the conceptualization and impacts of distance in IB research, through various complementary lenses, each of these contributing in a substantive fashion to fill present knowledge gaps. Regional market strategy for Corvus for the eCommerce and eFinance department
Today, the online payment and ecommerce industry is a dynamic and fast moving industry, where competition is fierce. Today´s market leaders are maybe at the top of the competition pyramid, but that doesn´t mean they be on top tomorrow. Making a quick and sound judgment call for instance: Which countries should we enter as a company? Will the desired country be able to fulfill our expectations? Where is the competition? What are the cost? What are the benefits? These are all valid question which in today´s global market can make a company or break a company. With this thesis, the author hopes to bring a few answer to the above questions. Give an objective suggestion on which direction a company could go. Also show how to use different sources of information and how to interpret them to define a certain business case/strategy for a company
The development of international opportunities in born globals context: The role of institutions
The vast literature on born globals and early internationalization has recently underlined the importance of international opportunity development for the subsequent internationalization of the firms. Along this line, academics called for research investigating opportunity development in born global context. Moreover, the role of institutions in this process has not been investigated yet. Then, scholars have called for comparative international entrepreneurship research. Following these suggestions, the authors developed an exploratory research on the role of institutions in the process of opportunity development of born globals. By comparing three cases from China and three from Italy, the purpose of the research is to highlight how different institutional contexts influence the international opportunity development process in the case of born globals. The analysis of case studies led the authors to create a model and drawing discussion about the interactions between institutions and opportunity development. Practical implications and future research are discussed
Strategic proposal for internationalization of Adrialab d.o.o., a small pharmaceutical company from Croatia
The main objective of this thesis is to develop a comprehensive proposal for internationalization of a small spin-off pharmaceutical company Adrialab, d.o.o. As such this thesis focuses on three key areas of the internationalization processes for a small and medium sized company (SME): the motivation behind the decision to internationalize, the international market selection and the mode of entry into selected markets. The author has decided on an international literature review approach to establish key concepts in each area, to discuss such concepts in the context of an SME and to identify and implement some of usually descriptive models developed by international management (IM) scholars in order to make recommendations for Adrialab d.o.o. By mimicking the internationalization motives classification used in IM literature, this thesis establishes Adrialabâ s profitability issues with product lines and distribution channels in the domestic market, the spare manufacturing capacity, the companyâ s vision which includes Southeast European (SEE) countries and spin-off nature of the company as reactive and proactive efficiency seeking motives. Subsequently, the author defines the scope of countries to be assessed in the IMS process and develops and foreign market opportunity index ranking those countries on a combination of economic, population and industry macro indicators as well as selected aggregate measures deemed relevant for consumer expenditure categories targeted by the company portfolio. Company policies, resources and capabilities are evaluated in order to determine feasible equity and non-equity based entry modes while an analysis of competitive and distribution dynamics in each country serves to establish most promising consumer segments and desirable types of intermediaries
Accentuation of Jonas Rėza's Psalter of 1625
Straipsnyje trumpai apžvelgiama dabartinių kalbų kirčio ženklų istorija – nuo Antikos kalbininko Aristofano Bizantiečio žymėtų akūto, gravio ir cirkumflekso iki Mažvydo Katekizme pažymėto į riestinį cirkumfleksą panašaus ženklo, Baltramiejaus Vilento raštų, D. Kleino gramatikos, J. Rėzos psalmyno ,,Psalteras Dowido“ kirčio ženklų. Išsamiau straipsnyje analizuojamas 1625 m. J. Rėzos psalmyno kirčiavimas, iš graikų perimti kirčio ženklai, paties autoriaus įsivestas kirčio ženklas. Straipsnyje taip pat aptariama Rėzos psalmyne vartotų kirčio ženklų funkcijos, kirčio ženklų vartojimo įvairavimas, sąsajos tarp psalmyno kirčiavimo ir D. Kleino gramatikos Reikšminiai žodžiai: Akūtas; Gravis; Cirkumfleksas; Psalmynas; Lietuvių kalbos istorija; KirčiavimasThis article gives a brief overview of the history of the accent marks of languages from Antiquity linguist Aristophanes of Byzantium marked the acute accent, grave accent and circumflex accent until the sign similar to a tilde-shaped circumflex marked in Mažvydas’ Catechism, and accent signs of Baltramiejus Vilentas’ writings, Daniel Klein‘s grammer, and Jonas Rhesa’s Psalter of David. The article gives a comprehensive analysis of the accentuation made by Jonas Rhesa in the psalter, accent marks taken from Greek, and an accent mark developed by the author himself. The article also discusses the functions of the accent marks used in Rhesa’s psalter, the variation of the usage of accent marks and the interaction between the accentuation of the psalter and D. Klein’s grammer
Efficiency of Electronic Recruiting Methods
The use of technology in personnel recruiting has increased tremendously within the last few years. In particular, the World Wide Web (www) has gained importance for human resource (HR) managers (see, for example, Puck, 2002). Different methods of ehuman resource management have been developed, among them electronic recruiting. According to Lee (2005), “e-recruiting is the second largest application in the e-commerce area” (p. 493). Anyhow, research results on electronic recruiting are relatively scarce and the existing studies are published in a number of different disciplines and publication types. Given both the relevance and the scarce results this chapter aims to review the existing studies and to summarize their findings. To do so, we explain the two major methods of electronic recruiting—internal corporate Web site recruiting and external online recruiting—and discuss their benefits and pitfalls from the perspective of employing companies. Finally, we present possible future developments in the field. </jats:p
Jonas, Hobbes e le forme della paura
This essay aims at clarifying the concept of Jonas’s heuristic of fear. Although it has been severely criticized, fear remains an aspect of his thought which has drawn little attention, particularly regarding the role it plays in the elaboration of the imperative of responsibility. Jonas elaborates a new concept of fear, moulded by the particular form of uncertainty brought about by the technological age. Although critics have interpreted Jonas’ attempt as an ethics founded on irrationality and emotion, the present analysis shows that Jonas affirms a cognitivist theory of fear. The concept of fear he discusses in The Imperative of Responsibility is not an emotion as an immediate physical and psychological reaction, but a form of evaluative thinking that is part of responsibility. In order to illustrate form and function of fear in Jonas thought, I will refer to the meanings of fear in Hobbes, an author Jonas himself refers to

New business models for electric utility companies
Abstract Business modelling is a valuable strategic tool in times of business transformation and thus a useful concept to reflect on the future of electric utilities. Today, this sector finds itself in the midst of a dramatic transformative change with powerful and potentially disruptive drivers such as renewable and distributed energy production or the -smart- power grid. In the electric utilities industry, innovation hasn-t played a major role in the past. However, business model innovation - which is defined here as a major transformation in the way a company delivers value - will be of central importance for utility companies as their current business model is outdated. For new business models, information and communication technology, -big data-, and multisided platforms will be decisive elements. Three radically new (in the sense of game-changing) downstream and service business models which could allow utilities to play a central role in future energy markets are discussed in this Master-s thesis: In the -Energy Generation Manager- model, the utility supports customers in their efforts to generate their own energy supply. The -Distribution and Storage Manager- is a smart grid platform model in which the utility controls and balances the distribution and consumption of energy within self-sufficient regional networks. In the business model -Energy Efficiency Partner-, the utility helps customers to manage efficiency in energy consumption in a holistic approach by using intelligent measurement, control technology, or storage and generation units. Based on an evaluation of these three models via expert interviews, electric utilities should experiment with all three (and of course also other) models since - under the right circumstances - they can all offer big opportunities. Theoretically, the most attractive model seems to be the -Distribution and Storage Manager- model, but it is also the most risky one. Utilities should therefore concentrate on the -Energy Generation Manager- and -Energy Efficiency Partners- models in a first step, as they offer clearer monetization logic which can be implemented easier. At the same time, their new business development and experimentation efforts should focus on the -Distribution and Storage Manager- model, as this one holds the biggest disruptive potential. Although these radically new business models might look attractive, it was noted that - at this point - they are still very much in their early-stages and that none of them seem to offer a financially viable alternative (yet) for utilities to totally replace their current business of producing, distributing, and selling electricity. It is therefore likely that new business models will have to coexist with the prevailing one for quite some time. In the years to come, utilities are thus well advised to use mapping exercises, experimentation, and effectuation in order to evaluate and test possible new business models. Implementation will cause a lot of organizational stress, as these new business models will, with all probability, lead to a cannibalization of the traditional revenue streams
