Cycling on the Verge? Exploring the Place of Utility Cycling in Contemporary New Zealand Transport Policy
Efforts to increase cycling as a mode of transport (utility cycling) occur at central, regional and local levels of government through a range of supportive strategies, research, and guidelines. Despite these efforts, utility cycling levels in New Zealand have remained persistently low. This thesis examines the apparent disparity between policy intent and policy result, using a discourse analytical approach. It examines how cycling is positioned in contemporary New Zealand transport policy documents, and explores whose priorities are shaping transport policy with what implications for utility cycling.
This study uses a critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach to analyse the land transport documents from across the institutions of government. The CDA approach, grounded in the work of van Dijk and Fairclough, draws on ideas from the interpretive tradition of discourse analysis, inspired by Foucault’s concepts of knowledge and power. This approach reveals the position of utility cycling by exposing the framing, dominant discourses, and discursive strategies that privilege certain transport objectives and activities over others.
The findings show transport is promoted almost exclusively by central government as an activity to facilitate economic growth and efficiency, despite its potential (and actual) impacts on health and well-being, social justice, and environmental sustainability. The discursive practices of the government privilege private motor vehicle use, helping to both legitimate and maintain that privilege at all levels of government, while positioning utility cycling as a marginalised mode of transport.
This thesis contributes to scholarship on utility cycling and land transport policy in New Zealand by identifying how the discursive strategies of government control the position of utility cycling in New Zealand. This study underscores the need for a central government-led, long-term strategic vision for a genuinely integrated, multi-modal transport system, in order for the benefits of utility cycling to be fully maximised

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Expression of osteoblast marker genes in rat calvarial osteoblast-like cells, and effects of the endocrine disrupters diphenylolpropane, benzophenone-3, resveratrol and silymarin
Compelling evidence indicates that some endocrine disrupters (EDs), acting as selective estrogen-receptor modulators, interfere with osteoblast differentiation and function. Hence, we investigated whether four EDs [bisphenol-A (BSP), benzophenone-3 (BP3), resveratrol and silymarin] affect differentiation and growth of rat calvarial osteoblast-like (ROB) cells in primary in vitro culture. ROB cells were cultured for up 30 days in a medium supplemented with fetal calf serum (FCS), and conventional RT-PCR detected the expression of collagen-1alpha and osteonectin mRNAs through the entire culture period. Real time-PCR demonstrated that at days 2 and 7 of culture the expressions of collagen-1alpha and osteonectin were very low, and underwent a 192- and a 334-fold increase, respectively, at day 21 of culture. In contrast, osteocalcin expression remained unchanged from days 2 to 21 of culture. EIA showed that ROB cells secreted sizeable amounts of osteocalcin and osteopontin between days 13 and 15 of culture. EDs were added at day 13 of culture at concentrations ranging from 10(-10) to 10(-6) M, being the culture medium deprived of FCS, and their effects were tested 48 h later. None of EDs was found to affect osteocalcin and osteopontin secretion from ROB cells, suggesting that their effects were tested at a relatively earlier stage of culture, when ROB cell differentiation into osteoblats is not fully accomplished, and/or the presence of estrogens contained in FCS is needed for EDs to exert their osteoblast-differentiation modulating action. BSP and BP3, but not resveratrol and silymarin, decreased proliferative activity of cultured ROB cells, a cytotoxic effect conceivably independent of their estrogen-receptor modulating activity

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied

Experimental and computational investigation of autoignition of jet fuels and surrogates in nonpremixed flows at elevated pressures
Experimental and computational investigations are carried out to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of autoignition of surrogates of jet-fuels at elevated pressures up to 6bar. The jet-fuels tested are JP-8, Jet-A, and JP-5, and the surrogates tested are the Aachen Surrogate made up of 80% n-decane and 20% 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene by mass, Surrogate C made up of 60% n-dodecane, 20% methylcyclohexane and 20% o-xylene by volume, and the 2nd generation Princeton Surrogate made up of 40.4% n-dodecane, 29.5% 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, 7.3% 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene and 22.8% n-propylbenzene by mole. Using the counterflow configuration, an axisymmetric flow of a gaseous oxidizer stream, made up of a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, is directed over the surface of an evaporating pool of a liquid fuel. The experiments are conducted at a fixed value of mass fraction of oxygen in the oxidizer stream and at a fixed value of the strain rate. The temperature of the oxidizer stream at autoignition, T ig , is measured as a function of pressure, p. Experimental results show that the critical conditions, of autoignition of the surrogates are close to that of the jet-fuels. Overall the critical conditions of autoignition of Surrogate C agree best with those of the jet-fuels. Computations were performed using skeletal mechanisms constructed from a detailed mechanism. Predictions of the critical conditions of autoignition of the surrogates are found to agree well with measurements. Computations show that low-temperature chemistry plays a significant role in promoting autoignition for all surrogates. The low-temperature chemistry, of the component of the surrogate with the greatest volatility, was found to have the most influence on the critical conditions of autoignition
