High ionic conductivity in confined bismuth oxide-based heterostructures

    No full text
Bismuth trioxide in the cubic fluorite phase (delta-Bi2O3) exhibits the highest oxygen ionic conductivity. In this study, we were able to stabilize the pure delta-Bi2O3 at low temperature with no addition of stabilizer but only by engineering the interface, using highly coherent heterostructures made of alternative layers of delta-Bi2O3 and Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), deposited by pulsed laser deposition. The resulting [delta-Bi2O3/YSZ] heterostructures are found to be stable over a wide temperature range (500-750 degrees C) and exhibits stable high ionic conductivity over a long time comparable to the value of the pure delta-Bi2O3, which is approximately two orders of magnitude higher than the conductivity of YSZ bulk. Electro-chemo-mechanical effect in Gd-doped ceria thin films with a controlled orientation

Gd-doped ceria (CGO) fluorite exhibits prominent electro-chemo-mechanical properties and giant-electrostriction at room temperature and has been recently disclosed in both CGO polycrystalline films and bulk. The electromechanical properties of CGO depend on the oxygen vacancy defects of the fluorite lattice. Early experiments suggest that defects along the [111] crystallographic direction promote high atomic distortion. These factors result in the largest electrostriction response ever measured. However, only out-of-plane electrostriction (i.e. M-13) in (111) CGO oriented thin films has been reported so far, and several questions remain open about the electrostriction mechanism in the oxygen-defective fluorite. Here, we present electromechanical performances along different crystallographic directions. We grow thin films by pulsed laser deposition on single crystal substrates to obtain longitudinal and shear deformations (i.e. M(11)andM(12)) of highly coherent (100), (110) and (111) oriented CGO thin films. As a result, we find an order of magnitude higher electrostriction coefficient along [100]. Such an analysis gives a new insight into the mechanism of CGO electrostriction

Enhanced electro-mechanical coupling of TiN/Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 thin film electrostrictor

Gadolium doped ceria, Gd:CeO2 (CGO), have recently been shown to possess an exceptional high electrostriction coefficient (Q), which is at the least three orders of magnitude larger than the best performing lead-based electrostrictors, e.g. Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)O-3. Herein, we show that CGO thin films fabricated by a pulsed laser deposition method can be directly integrated onto the Si substrate by using TiN films of few nanometers as functional electrodes. The exceptional good coupling between TiN and Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 yields a high electrostriction coefficient of Q(e) = 40 m(4) C-2 and a superior electrochemomechanical stability with respect to the metal electrodes

Releasing cation diffusion in self-limited nanocrystalline defective ceria thin films

Acceptor-doped nanocrystalline cerium oxide thin films are mechanically constrained nano-domains, with film/substrate interfacial strain and chemical doping deadlock mass diffusion. In contrast, in this paper we show that chemical elements result in highly unstable thin films under chemical reduction, with unexpected diffusion-driven effects such as fast migration of grain boundaries, porosity nucleation, and interdiffusion at low temperatures

Atomic-scale insights into electro-steric substitutional chemistry of cerium oxide

Cerium oxide (ceria, CeO2) is one of the most promising mixed ionic and electronic conducting materials. Previous atomistic analysis has widely covered the effects of substitution on oxygen vacancy migration. However, an in-depth analysis of the role of cation substitution beyond trivalent cations has rarely been explored. Here, we investigate soluble monovalent (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+), divalent (Fe2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+), trivalent (Al3+, Fe3+, Sc3+, In3+, Lu3+, Yb3+, Y3+, Er3+, Gd3+, Eu3+, Nd3+, Pr3+, La3+) and tetravalent (Si4+, Ge4+, Ti4+, Sn4+, Hf4+, Zr4+) cation substituents. By combining classical simulations and quantum mechanical calculations, we provide an insight into defect association energies between substituent cations and oxygen vacancies as well as their effects on the diffusion mechanisms. Our simulations indicate that oxygen ionic diffusivity of subvalent cation-substituted systems follows the order Gd3+> Ca2+> Na+. With the same charge, a larger size mismatch with the Ce(4+)cation yields a lower oxygen ionic diffusivity,i.e., Na+> K+, Ca2+> Ni2+, Gd3+> Al3+. Based on these trends, we identify species that could tune the oxygen ionic diffusivity: we estimate that the optimum oxygen vacancy concentrationfor achieving fast oxygen ionic transport is approximate to 2.5% for GdxCe1-xO2-x/2, Ca(x)Ce(1-x)O(2-x)and Na(x)Ce(1-x)O(2-3x/2)at 800 K. Remarkably, such a concentration is not constant and shifts gradually to higher values as the temperature is increased. We find that co-substitutions can enhance the impact of the single substitutions beyond that expected by their simple addition. Furthermore, we identify preferential oxygen ion migration pathways, which illustrate the electro-steric effects of substituent cations in determining the energy barrier of oxygen ion migration. Such fundamental insights into the factors that govern the oxygen diffusion coefficient and migration energy would enable design criteria to be defined for tuning the ionic properties of the material,e.g., by co-substitutions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
