    I contaminanti emergenti possono essere materiali, come plastica, microplastiche e nanoparticelle, sostanze chimiche e verdi, prodotti per la cura personale e molti altri tipi di inquinanti. L'obiettivo principale di questo studio è quello di comprendere l'impatto ambientale di diversi tipi di contaminanti emergenti. Gli strumenti utilizzati per analizzare questo aspetto sono saggi ecotossicologici, combinati con biomarcatori di stress ossidativo. Diversi bioindicatori e diverse analisi, oltre all'uso di end-point innovativi (come le biometrie nei saggi ecotossicologici) e al calcolo dell'indice integrato, possono consentire una valutazione più accurata dell'impatto di tali contaminanti sull'ambiente. Oltre a valutare l'impatto in condizioni standard, il secondo obiettivo dello studio è quello di comprendere l'impatto in un contesto di cambiamento globale. Il cambiamento globale ha molti aspetti da indagare, l'interesse in questo lavoro è diretto a conoscere, in particolare, l'effetto del pH sull'impatto ambientale dei contaminanti emergenti. L'impatto ambientale di contaminanti emergenti in condizioni standard e in condizioni di pH modificato sono stati valutati allestendo alcuni esperimenti che sono riportati in alcuni articoli pubblicati.Emerging contaminants can be materials, like plastics, microplastics and nanoparticles, chemical and green substances, personal care products and a lot of other kind of pollutants. The principal aim of this study is to understand the environmental impact of different types of emerging contaminant. The tools used to analyze this aspect are ecotoxicological assays, combined with biomarkers of oxidative stress. Different bioindicators and different analysis, in addition to the use of innovative end-point (like biometries in ecotoxicological assays) and the calculation of integrated index, can permit a more accurate evaluation of the impact of that contaminants on the environment. In addition to evaluate the impact in standard condition, the second aim of the study is to understand the impact in a global change context. Global change has a lot of aspect to investigate, the interest in this work is directed to know, in particular, the effect of pH on environmental impact of emerging contaminants. The environmental impact of emerging contaminant in standard condition and in changed pH condition were evaluate setting some experiments that are reported in some published papers

    Ecotoxicity of marine sediments: Sampling and laboratory artifacts and their impacts on risk classification

    Assessing the ecotoxicological risk of marine sediments is now a critical factor in deciding how to treat dredged material in harbor and coastal areas. Although ecotoxicological analyses are routinely required by some regu-latory agencies in Europe, laboratory skills necessary to perform them are often underestimated. According to the Italian Ministerial decree No. 173/2016, ecotoxicological tests are performed on the solid phase and elutriates, and the classification of sediment quality is defined using the "Weight of Evidence" (WOE) approach. However, the decree does not provide adequate information regarding the preparation techniques and laboratory skills. As result, a wide variability among laboratories occurs. An error in the classification of ecotoxicological risk has a negative impact on the whole environmental quality and/or the economy and management of the interested area. Thus, the main aim of this study was to determine if such variability can affect the ecotoxicological out-comes of tested species and WOE associated classification, producing different options for the management of dredged sediments. Four different sediment types were selected to assess the ecotoxicological responses and their changes as a function of variability of the following factors: a) the storage time laps (STL) for both the solid phase and the elutriates; b) the methods used to prepare the elutriates (centrifugation vs. filtration), and the conser-vation method used for the elutriates (freshly prepared vs. freezing). Results suggest a wide variability of eco-toxicological responses among the four sediment samples here considered, differentiated according to chemical pollution, grain-size texture, and macronutrient contents. The storage time laps significantly affect the physi-cochemical parameters and the ecotoxicity of both the solid phase test and elutriates. For the elutriates prepa-ration, centrifugation is preferred to filtration to preserve a better representation of sediment heterogeneity. Freezing of elutriates does not seem to show any significant effects on the toxicity. Findings allow to define a weighted schedule of the storage time of sediments and elutriates useful for laboratories to scale analytical priority and strategies related to different sediment types

    Ecotoxicological assessment, in freshwater environment, of wastewater sludge coupled and uncoupled with micro‐polyvinyl chloride on algae and water fleas

    In the frame of bioeconomy and circular economy, wastewater sludge (WS) could be a good candidate for its use in agriculture as fertilizer, due to its high content of organic matter, N and P, but on the other hand, it is full of toxicants such as heavy metal, microplastics, detergent, antibiotics, and so on that can reach groundwater and water bodies in leachate form. In this study, we have investigated different sludge concentrations in the eluate form, combined and not with PVC on two different freshwater organisms Selenastrum capricornutum and Daphnia magna, using ecotoxicity tests. At the endpoint, we have evaluated inhibition growth rate, oxidative stress, and pigments production for S. capricornutum, while in case of D. magna, we have assessed organism immobilization and development. From our results, it emerged that at the higher WS concentration, there was not inhibition growth rate, while at oxidative stress, it was higher in algae treated with WS and PVC. Higher Chl-a production was shown for algae treated with 0.3 g/L of sludge coupled with PVC, where higher phaeopigments production were recorded for algae treated with 0.3 g/L of WS. D. magna has shown an opposite trend when compared with algae, where at the highest WS concentrations supplied was corresponding to an increased mortality explaned as the highest immobility percentage.     Ecotoxicological Assessment of “Glitter” Leachates in Aquatic Ecosystems: An Integrated Approach

    The most worrisome fraction within plastic pollution is that of microplastics (MP). A category of MP almost completely ignored is that of glitter. The objective of this study is to test the toxicity of nine types of glitter leachate (3 soak times: 3, 90 and 180 days) on model organisms in freshwater (Allivibrio fischeri, Raphidocelis subcapitata, Daphnia magna) and saltwater (Allivibrio fischeri, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Paracentrotus lividus). An integrated approach was applied to obtain the percentage of ecotoxicological risk. The results show that (i) photosynthesizing primary producers are the most sensitive trophic level; (ii) algae transitioned from growth inhibition to biostimulation; (iii) D. magna showed higher sensitivity after 48 h compared to 24 h; (iv) A. fischeri responded more strongly in saltwater than in freshwater. The integrated data show a greater risk associated with the marine environment, with the highest risk for glitters that are hexagonal and composed of poly-methyl-methacrylate. Our multivariate analysis shows that the toxicity of plastic leaching is a complex phenomenon that depends on the sensitivity of the species, in some cases on the soaking time and on the medium, and is not clearly linked to the polymer type, the contact area or the colors of the particles

    The series of experiments presented in the paper served to clarify the effects of contemporary exposure to surfactant, microplastics (polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride), and nanoparticles (TiO2 and ZnO) on the model organism Daphnia magna. Exposure was evaluated with respect to the age of the organisms (“young”, 24 hours old, and “aged” 10 days old specimens), trophic status (feeding or fasting), and the simultaneous presence of a surfactant. All the above-mentioned substances are present in the wastewater coming from various environmental sources from cosmetic products. The experiments were conducted in compliance with the OECD 202:2004 guideline, which is also a reference for ecotoxicity tests required by REACH. The results showed that surfactants enhance effects of toxicity produced by the exposure to the microplastic + nanoparticle mixtures. The influence due to factors such as nutrition (effect in fasting >> feeding conditions) and the age of individuals (effects in older >> younger animals) is essential. Concerning young individuals, exposure to PE-TiO2 is the most significant in terms of effects produced: it is very significant, especially in the presence of surfactant (both under fasting and feeding conditions). On the contrary, exposure to the PE-Zn mixture shows the minor effects. The comparison with the literature, especially as regards the possibility of interpreting the toxicity trends for the various mixtures with respect to the individual elements that compose them, leads to hypothesize additive effects still to be investigated and confirms the greatest toxicity contribution of TiO2

    Ficopomatus enigmaticus, a reef-forming serpulid, has emerged as a promising candidate for biomonitoring and ecotoxicology studies. Recent research has focused on adult stress responses, highlighting the need to understand population-specific responses. This study employed a multi-biomarker approach to investigate how F. enigmaticus adults from two populations in the NE Adriatic (Site A) and NE Tyrrhenian (Site B) responded to chronic exposure to heat and chemical stress (dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO), individually and in combination. The analysis detected significant differences in protein content and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) between populations. Notably, no oxidative damage (measured as lipid peroxidation, LPO) was detected in any population or treatment. Similarly, no significant differences were detected in the integrated biomarker response index (IBRv2i). However, lower IBRv2i values at Site A suggested reduced stress conditions, possibly indicating that this site may have lower baseline stress. Overall, treatment effects were limited and site-specific: only the combined heat and DMSO exposure at Site A lowered GST activity compared to heat stress alone. Nevertheless, both populations exhibited broadly similar biochemical response patterns to stress. Our findings deepen the understanding of stress physiology in F. enigmaticus, underscoring the ecological importance of multi-stressor approaches in environmental monitoring

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
