Unbestimmte Welt
Development of Safety in Structural Standards
Nowadays, the required safety of structures is achieved through computational verifications and qualitative requirements for the building materials and the construction processes. Both the computational verifications and the qualitative requirements are shaped by increasingly specific scientific investigations and by political framework conditions. The target values of the required safety are largely developed by models focused on individual limit states, although individual collapses have an impact on the standards. An examination of safety across the entire stock of structures has not yet been carried out. In this paper, the safety of the stock of structures is determined from the ratio of the median calculated failure probabilities of different calculations and the median observed collapse frequencies over all structures. The ratio shows the absolute safety, i.e., the sum of safety from computational verifications and qualitative requirements. This allows an assessment of the quality of research and standard-ization work

Formal Techniques and Self/Other Relations in the Novels of Dirk Bogarde
The thesis foregrounds the distinctive contribution Dirk Bogarde made to
contemporary writing in a second career that developed in parallel to his screen
commitments. It dispels the notion that Bogarde followed a familiar path as an actor
who wrote books. Instead it establishes his reputation as an innovative writer whose
formal technique was substantially influenced by the textual systems of cinema and
the cross-fertilisation from acting to writing.
In examining the formative factors that steered Bogarde towards authorship, the
thesis addresses the role of performance as a generative factor in the evolution of the
novels, establishing a discursive link with Bakhtinian dialogism, and specifically,
transgredience as a formal imperative. Secondly, it affords a critical insight into why
the major concerns with staging and performativity preoccupy his writing career.
The thesis claims that Bogarde was an empirically dialogical writer whose use
of camera-eye narration fostered the proliferation of competing discourses across the
fiction. This formal dynamic is centred on the relationship between stages and
dialogism, which incorporates the work of Erving Goffinan as a complementary
critique to Bakhtinian theory with its emphasis on self-presentation. The concern
with socially-constructed behaviour leads the thesis to address the associated issues of
stereotyping and 'otherness', which in terms of body politics is articulated by the
mono logic drive to confine the sexual 'other' to a fixed representation.
Bogarde's ability to draw on cinematic and performance techniques identifies
an area of expertise unavailable to most other writers. This is an unusual repository
of skills to bring to writing which is why the thesis makes the claim for his singular
achievement as a contemporary author. There are fruitful points of intersection to be
explored in this respect with the work of Christopher Isherwood, whom Bogarde read
and admired, as a basis for further research. It is hoped that the thesis will play its
part in opening up new possibilities for Bogarde's writing to be re-visited by future
critics
Database of tunnel collapses and failures
This database contains data of collapses in tunnels during construction or operation and cases of extensive maintenance signifying the end of service life. It can form the basis for statistical interpetations as well as hisotrical review of various tunnel projects. This database also forms the basis for the investigations reported in the papers "Revised Comparison of Tunnel Collapse Frequencies and Tunnel Failure Probabilities" by P. Spyridis and D. Proske (DOI:10.1061/AJRUA6.0001107) and "Assessing the failure potential of tunnels and the impacts on cost overruns and project delays" by C. Paraksevopoulou, M. Dallavalle, S. Konstantis, P. Comparison of Large Dam Failure Frequencies with Failure Probabilities
Recently the author has compared observed collapse frequencies and computed failure probabilities of bridges. In contrast, in this paper the comparison of observed failure frequencies and the failure probabilities of large dams is carried out. In the paper the failure frequencies are estimated based on various publications related to the failure statistics of dams for different regions and different times. The various publications are considered in terms of a meta-analysis to provide a robust estimation of the failure frequencies and to identify trends of the failure frequencies. The failure trend analysis considers both; the failure frequency per year and the failure frequency related to the accumulated experience in dam years. The latter enables the comparison to the generalized learning curve. The failure frequencies are compared to the computed probabilities of failure for large dams. The comparison is evaluated with regard to the accuracy of the computed values to the observed ones
