Una gravidanza 'blasfema' (Ennod. carm. 2.97 H. = 217 V.)
The essay explains the intertextual connection of a satiric epigram of Magnus Felix Ennodius, carm. 2.97 H. = 217 V. De anu quadam with the description of the miraculous pregnancy of Sara, Isaac’s mother, in Sedulius’ Carmen Paschale. Furthermore, the article provides an Italian translation of the poem to explain the allusion to the menopause of the old woman at l. 3
22-23 Hall = 15 Charlet
This essay provides the edition, the Italian translation, and the commentary of two pederastic epigrams, i.e. 22 and 23 of the Appendix of poems attributed to Claudian in the edition of J. B. Hall 1985. The reconstruction of the editorial tradition is intertwined with that of Petronius and Claudian. In this context, a new manuscript is presented (Rowlinson G. 109), previously ignored. The detailed comparison with anonymous medieval epigrams dealing with the relationship between a man and a puer allows us to ascribe the two poems to medieval times
The essay provides a complete study of the literary models of the prefatory epigram of the Hexameron by Eugenius of
Toledo, underlining the processes of refunctionalization of the paradigms relating to the topos of the Anrede an das
Buch (Horatius, Martial, Optatianus Porphyrius, Ausonius), in light of the controversial relationship between the poet and Chindasvintus. Furthermore, the translation and the analysis of the dedicatory epistle to the Visigothic king illustrate the characteristic of Eugenius’ prose. Finally, the formal comparison between the epigram and the final recapitulatio sex dierum proves the aware intention of Eugenius to create a work worthy of an epigone of the classical philologists and the personal library of the king Chindasvintus
Knowledge of the poems of Magnus Felix Ennodius in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages is a field of research that has not yet been explored. The essay provides some food for thought on the possible fortune of the Late Antique author starting from Columbanus up to Radulfus Tortarius, identifying in the greatest medieval poets (Aldhelm, Paul the Deacon, Sedulius Scotus) expressions, verbal sequences and original clauses of the poet of Ticinum. The last section is dedicated to the epigraphic field and above all to the Fortleben of notable iuncturae minted by Ennodius in some inscriptions of the 8th-9th century
Pagan and Christian guttura: an intertextual study between Prudentius and the Laus Herculis
The challenge of dating an anonymous or spurious work is often addressed through intertextual comparison with texts of established chronology. This is the case of the Laus Herculis (Anth. 494b), an unfinished Latin hexameter encomium of the Greek hero and three of his nine labors. The attribution to the poet Claudian has been largely rejected by modern scholarship. This study offers a comparison between the episode of the slaying of the Nemean lion and two passages from Prudentius: the parable of the Good Shepherd (Cath. 8.33-37) and the duel between Virtus and Avaritia (Psych. 589-591). The analysis suggests that the author may have been a Christian writing in the late fifth century
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
