    Modeling seasonal redox dynamics and the corresponding fate of the pharmaceutical residue phenazone during artificial recharge of groundwater

    Reactive multicomponent transport modeling was used to investigate and quantify the factors that affect redox zonation and the fate of the pharmaceutical residue phenazone during artificial recharge of groundwater at an infiltration site in Berlin, Germany. The calibrated model and the corresponding sensitivity analysis demonstrated that temporal and spatial redox zonation at the study site was driven by seasonally changing, temperature-dependent organic matter degradation rates. Breakthrough of phenazone at monitoring wells occurred primarily during the warmer summer months, when anaerobic conditions developed. Assuming a redox-sensitive phenazone degradation behavior the model results provided an excellent agreement between simulated and measured phenazone concentrations. Therefore, the fate of phenazone was shown to be indirectly controlled by the infiltration water temperature through its effect on the aquifer's redox conditions. Other factors such as variable residence times appeared to be of less importance

    Modelling of an enhanced PAH attenuation experiment and associated biogeochemical changes at a former gasworks site in southern Germany

    Former manufactured gas plant sites often form a widespread contaminant source in the subsurface, leading to large plumes that contain a wide variety of tar-oil related compounds. Although most of these compounds eventually degrade naturally, the relevant processes tend to be slow and inefficient, often leaving active remediation as the only viable option to eliminate the risks of toxic substances to reach potential receptors such as surface waters or drinking water wells. In this study we use a reactive transport model to analyse the fate of a contaminant plume containing acenaphthene, methylbenzofurans and dimethylbenzofurans (i) prior to the installation of an active remediation scheme and (ii) for an enhanced remediation experiment during which O(2) and H(2)O(2) were added to the contaminated groundwater through a recirculation well. The numerical model developed for this study considers the primary contaminant degradation reactions (i.e., microbially mediated redox reactions) as well as secondary and competing mineral precipitation/dissolution reactions that affect the site's hydrochemistry and/or contaminant fate. The model was calibrated using a variety of constraints to test the uncertainty on model predictions resulting from the undocumented presence of reductants such as pyrite.     A process-based reactive hybrid transport model for coupled discrete conduit-continuum systems

    A process-based reactive hybrid transport model, RUMT3D, was developed to quantify the fate of dissolved contaminants and their interaction with solid phases in domains where discrete conduit networks are embedded in a permeable matrix. Such hybrid systems can be found, for example, in flooded underground mines, discrete karstic and fractured systems as well as in aquifers with intersecting boreholes. RUMT3D specificatly takes into account the two distinctly different transport regimes within such hybrid systems: (i) rapid transport within the network of the highly conductive conduits, shafts, drifts, ventilation raises or roadways and (ii) the low velocity regime within the considerably less permeable matrix. RUMT3D is an extension of the existing reactive transport model PHT3D. Compared to the original model, which combines the mutti-species transport simulator MT3DMS with the geochemical model PHREEQC-2, RUMT3D additionally incorporates a conduit transport model. A benchmark problem simulating the principal processes occurring at contaminated sites affected by acid mine drainage (AMD) was used to evaluate the model. The results suggest that for the simulation of contaminant transport in a hybrid system the consideration of rapid transport pathways is necessary. Conduits can strongly affect groundwater hydraulics and therefore become responsible for rapid hydrochemical changes. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Alt rights reserved

    Model-Based Analysis of Arsenic Retention by Stimulated Iron Mineral Transformation under Coastal Aquifer Conditions

    A multitude of geochemical processes control the aqueous concentration and transport properties of trace metal contaminants such as arsenic (As) in groundwater environments. Effective As remediation, especially under reducing conditions, has remained a significant challenge. Fe(II) nitrate treatments are a promising option for As immobilization but require optimization to be most effective. Here, we develop a process-based numerical modeling framework to provide an in-depth understanding of the geochemical mechanisms controlling the response of As-contaminated sediments to Fe(II) nitrate treatment. The analyzed data sets included time series from two batch experiments (control vs treatment) and effluent concentrations from a flow-through column experiment. The reaction network incorporates a mixture of homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions affecting Fe redox chemistry. Modeling revealed that the precipitation of the Fe treatment caused a rapid pH decline, which then triggered multiple heterogeneous buffering processes. The model quantifies key processes for effective remediation, including the transfer of aqueous As to adsorbed As and the transformation of Fe minerals, which act as sorption hosts, from amorphous to more stable phases. The developed model provides the basis for predictions of the remedial benefits of Fe(II) nitrate treatments under varying geochemical and hydrogeological conditions, particularly in high-As coastal environments

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
