Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Anthocyanin and phenolic acid profiles in purple, red and non-pigmented rice during germination
There is a growing interest in using germinated rice in health products based on their antioxidant properties but studies exploring differences in pigmented and non-pigmented rice types are limited. Therefore, anthocyanin and phenolic acid contents and composition were quantified using UPLC over 6 days of germination in three pigmented (two purple and one red) and one non-pigmented rice genotypes. Most of the anthocyanin content in purple rice, mainly cyanidin-3-glucoside and peonidin-3-glucoside, was lost during the imbibition and radicle emergence phase of germination. By contrast, there were only small changes in free and bound phenolic acid fractions over the 6 days of germination in all genotypes. Vanillic and ferulic acids comprised the main components of the free and bound pools, respectively. Vanillic acid contents, but not ferulic acid, were considerably greater in purple rice than in red and non-pigmented rice. Germination rapidly decreased the anthocyanin content in purple rice, but only had a minor effect on the free and bound phenolic acids in purple, red and non-pigmented rice. The increasing content of bound p-coumaric, ferulic and vanillic acids in germinated purple rice may provide an opportunity to develop rice products as functional foods
Stability of Anthocyanin content and antioxidant capacity among local Thai purple rice genotypes in different storage conditions
This study determined whether storage conditions over six months affected grain anthocyanin content and antioxidant capacity of four purple rice genotypes with different initial anthocyanin content. Two forms of grain, paddy and brown rice were stored at three temperatures -25 °C, room temperature (25-30 °C) and 60 °C with three replications. In the two high-anthocyanin genotypes, the anthocyanin continued to decrease until the last month of storage, while the low-anthocyanin genotypes were not affected by storage time. Storage at 60 °C decreased the average anthocyanin content by 42%, compared to the 30% loss for grain stored at either -25 °C or room temperature. Brown rice retained more of its anthocyanin than paddy rice in the high anthocyanin genotypes. Antioxidant capacity substantially declined during storage in all genotypes and the capacity was higher in brown than paddy rice. There was a significant correlation between anthocyanin content and antioxidant capacity in the two high-anthocyanin genotypes, but not in the low-anthocyanin genotypes, indicating the possibility of different anti-oxidative key compounds between the low- and high-anthocyanin genotypes. These results suggest that the anthocyanin content and antioxidant capacity in purple rice genotypes would be most stable when stored at low temperature as brown rice
Foliar zinc application improved grain zinc accumulation and bioavailable zinc in unpolished and polished rice
This study examined the effect of foliar zinc (Zn) application on grain yield, Zn and phytate concentrations and its impact on the phytate:Zn molar ratio, an indicator for Zn bioavailability in human digestive tracts, in unpolished and polished rice between two rice cultivars across two cropping years. The modern improved rice cultivar CNT1 and the traditional improved cultivar KDK were foliar applied with five rates of ZnSO4 in two cropping years. In 2016, 0.3% ZnSO4 increased the Zn concentration of unpolished rice in KDK by 21% over the nil Zn, while the effect was not found in CNT1. In polished rice, 0.2–0.4% ZnSO4 increased the Zn concentration by 11.2–20.0% in CNT1 and by 8.3–24.1% in KDK, and decreased the phytate concentration by 5.2–16.9% in KDK but not in CNT1. In 2017, 0.4% ZnSO4 increased the Zn concentration by 18.2–26.2% and 32.4–42.6% in unpolished and polished rice, respectively, in both cultivars. Application of 0.4% ZnSO4 decreased the phytate:Zn molar ratio in polished rice from 29.7 to 18.3 and from 26.4 to 17.9 in CNT1 and KDK, respectively in 2016, and from 15.7 to 12.6 in KDK in 2017. Foliar Zn application decreased the phytate:Zn molar ratio in unpolished rice from 27.9 to 22.7 and from 21.9 to 17.2 in CNT1 and KDK, respectively in 2017, but had no effect in 2016. Thus, foliar Zn application can improve grain Zn concentration and decrease the phytate:Zn molar ratio in both unpolished and polished rice but the response can vary with cropping year and cultivar
