Fuzzy membership functions based on point-to-polygon distance evaluation

    No full text
In this paper, a new approach is presented for the evaluation of membership functions in fuzzy clustering algorithms. Starting from the geometrical representation of clusters by polygons, the fuzzy membership is evaluated through a suited point-to-polygon distance estimation. Three different methods are proposed, either by using the geometrical properties of clusters in the data space or by using Gaussian or cone-shaped kernel functions. They differ from the basic trade-off between computational complexity and approximation accuracy. By the proposed approach, fuzzy clusters of any geometrical complexity can be used, since there is no longer required to impose constraints on the shape of clusters resulting from the choice of computationally affordable membership functions. The methods illustrated in the paper are validated in terms of speed and accuracy by using several numerical simulations. © 2013 IEEE

A higher-order fuzzy neural network for modeling financial time series

    No full text
This work investigates on the widespread use of fuzzy neural networks in time series forecasting, concerning in particular the energy commodity markets. We propose a new learning strategy suited to any neural model. The proposed approach is further assessed in the case of higher-order Sugeno-type fuzzy rules, which are able to replicate the daily data and to reproduce the same statistical features for various Commodity time series. The data used are obtained from the daily return series of specific energy commodities, such as coal, natural gas, crude oil and electricity, over the period 2001-2010 for both the European and US markets. We will prove that our approach can obtain interesting results in terms of prediction accuracy and volatility estimation, compared to well-known neural and fuzzy neural models and to the ARMA-GARCH statistical paradigm

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Repairing of recycled hybrid carbon fiber laminates

    No full text
Compression molded hybrid laminates have been manufactured by stacking 10 recycled epoxy-based carbon fiber plies with interlaminar polyamide film of 50 μm thickness. At first, carbon fiber (CF) reinforced composites underwent thermo-mechanical disassembly to obtain single composite CF plies. These plies, still impregnated with the waste cured resin, have been re-assembled by interposing one or two sheets of the thermoplastic film in the lamination sequence. Neat laminates have been used for comparison. Samples of size 85 × 30 mm2 have been tested under bending load, and materials repairability has been evaluated under 2 consecutive repairing cycles that have been carried out by applying pressure and heat along the composite failure line. Even though the neat composite showed the best mechanical properties, after the first repairing cycle a drastic drop has been recorded with a reduction of the elastic modulus of 92.4%. On the other hand, the elastic modulus of the hybrid composites has been reduced of only 24% on average. Highlights: Thermo-mechanical disassembly is used to recycle epoxy carbon fiber composite. Hybrid laminates are obtained by placing polyamide film between recycled plies. Pressure and heat are applied along the composite failure line for repairing. Hybrid composites repairing is carried out in comparison with neat materials. Repaired hybrid laminates have a higher elastic modulus than neat once

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Energy Saving Project for Heating System with ZigBee wireless control network

    No full text
An energy saving system able to optimize power management and energy efficiency of an home heating plant is proposed. Thanks to an advanced interface and control architecture based on ZigBee wireless devices, a continuous control of temperature is warranted making efficient the heating plant. The system uses a sensor and actuator combination to control and guarantee the desired system parameters; the information is transferred point-by-point using ZigBee communication network and it's sent to a central unit used to check the peripheral devices state and to take appropriate measures in case of failure or alarm
