Probing and Raising the Lithium Problems With Hadronic Gamma Rays and Cosmic -Ray Nucleosynthesis

107 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2006.Besides lithium, CRs also produce "pionic" gamma-rays through pp → pi0 → gammagamma. Thus there is an intimate link between Li and gamma-rays produced in CR interactions. In this thesis we explore this link and use it as a new, model-independent way of testing the CR nucleosynthesis of Li. We apply this tool to test a, still hypothetical, cosmological CR population. Moreover, our approach reveals yet another Li problem. The isotope 6Li is made only in CR interactions where the standard assumption is that the measured solar 6Li abundance originated from interactions of galactic cosmic-rays (GCRs) with the interstellar medium. However, by applying our tool on this fiducial case, we found that gamma-ray observations allow for only ≈ 60% of the solar 6Li abundance to be produced by standard GCRs. This result bears important consequences for the non-standard sources of 6Li nucleosynthesis such as decaying dark matter and low-energy cosmic-ray component.U of I OnlyRestricted to the U of I community idenfinitely during batch ingest of legacy ETD

Safe traffic light detection and interpretation with safety case of the Smart Meal Tray System (SMTS)

This paper deals with application conditions for safe usage of Traffic Light Detection in high automated robot vehicles that cross the road. The paper shall investigate if ISO 26262 standard is applicable for this purpose. The problem will be demonstrated on SMTS vehicle – Smart Meal Tray System. The vehicle is self-driving, without the option to switch command to a human driver. The vehicle is used for food delivery and drives on specialized pavement separated from the road. On crossroads, pavement is parallel with pedestrian crossing and intersects with the street. The focus of the analysis will be on this situation. The paper shall respond to the following research questions: 1. Is ISO 26262 suitable for such a software application? 2. Which ASIL is required in that context? 3. To what extent are the safety integrity requirements of ASIL tables required? 4. How can a safety case be demonstrated? 5. What are the safety application conditions?Author: Tijana SrejicScientific Paper Wien, FH Campus Wien 202

The Age of Skin and the Epoch of an Author: A Eulogy to Dubravka Ugrešić

    No full text
This text, the initial purpose of which was to review Dubravka Ugrešić’s latest book in English translation, the collection of essays The Age of Skin (2020), unexpectedly transformed into a synthetic writing on the literary and cultural relevance of this great feminist post-Yugoslav author, who passed away suddenly on 17 March 2023. The article analyses the main theses of the book and contextualizes them within Dubravka Ugrešić’s overall text corpus, emphasizing the importance of her essayistic authorial voice—a voice that articulates critical topics of our time, from poverty, exploitation, and violence, to migrations, everyday life mythologies, and popular culture, to melancholic recollections of a better past, together with a utopian future and the possibility of resistance, enabled also by the power and beauty of literature

“May your child live a healthy life and be a boy”. A qualitative study of professionals' experiences on son preference in Montenegro

Abstract     Author: Tijana Vujnovic   Title: “May your child live a healthy life and be a boy” - A qualitative study of professionals' experiences on son preference in Montenegro [Translated title]   Supervisor: Ann-Sofie Bergman   Assessor: Kerstin Arnesson     This thesis examines the social phenomenon “son preference” in Montenegro. The term son preference is defined by the desire to have a son, which is often expressed through different kinds of behaviour and/or discriminatory actions such as sex-selective abortions. The purpose of this study was to explore montenegrin professional's practical experiences on son preference in the montenegrin society. Through the experiences and knowledge of these professionals, the study aimed to analyze possible context-specific causes of son preference in Montenegro. The research was conducted with a qualitative approach, interviewing the following six professionals: a midwife, a gynecologist, a lawyer, a psychologist and two social workers. All interviews were conducted using the montenegrin language and later translated into swedish. The results indicate that son preference is an integrated part of the montenegrin culture and argues that the main causes of the phenomenon are linked to historical events in the geographical area of today's Montenegro. In contrast to previous research on son preference in China and India, historical struggles of survival and threats of ethnical extinction in a battle-scarred surrounding, seem to be a specific feature of son preference in Montenegro. Thus, this study suggests that son preference in Montenegro is a consequence of a cultural heritage that emphasizes the importance of the family's survival, which can only be achieved by the birth of sons.      Keywords: Son preference, Montenegro, gender inequality, human rights, history, culture, social identity, patriarchal bargain, shame.   Nyckelord: Sonpreferens, Montenegro, könsojämlikhet, mänskliga rättigheter, historia, kultur, social identitet, patriarchal bargain, skam
