The rediscovery of characteristic rural landscapes. An opportunity to create new activities?

For some years now, researchers in many geographical and other disciplinary fields have believed that historical rural landscapes contain an educational value for the landscapes of the future, in terms of analysis as well as protection in general and geo-economic aspects in particular, as an identity expression of the territory and as a preponderant element for the recovery of the same. In fact, in landscape studies the idea is widespread that historical and characteristic rural landscapes are not only the elements of a cultural heritage capable of preserving the memory of the past but also the bearers of a rational perspective for the future of European agriculture. The COVID-19 pandemic caused social and economic changes; critical issues highlight the need for a more integrated approach, taking into account the rediscovery of rural landscapes to practice open-air activities. Through a review of the international literature and the analysis of case studies, the paper aims to highlight the renewal processes of some cultural practices abandoned over the years but which today are an integral part of the local economy. In particular, the paper analyses the cases of two characteristic citrus groves in Apulia and Sicily, in the south of Italy. They demonstrate how the renewal of ancient practices such as the cultivation of citrus fruits together with the value of landscapes can represent an opportunity for an economic development of territories.

Inter- and intra-specific competition between Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula in resource-limited barren areas

The sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula coexist in the infralittoral zone along the Mediterranean and north-east Atlantic coasts. Through their grazing activity they can produce and maintain barren grounds, habitat characterised by low algal diversity and productivity. This study addresses the coexistence of these species within severely limited barren grounds by assessing differences in population structure, feeding preferences and conditions. Density, size structure, feeding conditions and gut contents of the two species, along with the associated algal assemblage were analysed in a hierarchical sampling design (Locations: thousands of meters apart; Sites: hundreds of meters apart). The algal assemblage, dominated by encrusting corallines (EC), was depauperate with bare rocks representing around 67% of the total percent cover, and homogeneous both at the Site and at the Location level. Sea urchins showed significant variability in density and gut conditions only at the Site level. No compensative mechanisms have been observed (no inverse correlation between the two species). The gut contents of the two species were quite different: A. lixula fed mainly on encrusting corallines, while P. lividus fed on non-encrusting macrophytes. Food limitation was detected for P. lividus, as a consequence of intra-specific competition. Our results highlight that in barren conditions a large trophic niche differentiation occurs, demonstrating that the two urchins play complementary and synergic roles in the maintenance of barrens in the Mediterranean

Revitalizing tourism through citrus routes. Exploring new practices and challenges

Citrus fruits have always played a vital role in the Mediterranean diet, and their cultivation has been a significant part of the region’s heritage. In recent years, the tourism industry has recognized the potential of citrus farms as attractive destinations for tourists. With their beautiful flowering, colorful leaves, and fruit picking activities, citrus farms have become popular tourist attractions. This trend has prompted a shift towards multipurpose agriculture, with citrus farms serving not only as places of production but also as tourism hotspots. The rural heritage of citrus fruits has become a valuable asset for the development of new tourism paths. This study focuses on two case studies in Southern Italy, in Apulia and Sicily, investigating the characteristics of integrated relational tourism in territories with a citrus production focus. The methodological approach is focused on exploratory qualitative analysis, collecting data from local citrus producers to understand their experiences and perceptions of citrus tourism. The exceptional quality and genuineness of Apulian and Sicilian citrus fruits are essential for promoting a healthy lifestyle and enriching the tourist offer. The study highlights the renewal of cultural practices that were once abandoned but have now become an integral part of the local economy. However, to sustain this growth, citrus tourism must integrate personalized, creative, unique, and innovative experiences to attract more tourists

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

An investigation on the effect of Li+/Ni2+ cation mixing on electrochemical performances and analysis of the electron conductivity properties of LiCo0.33Mn0.33Ni0.33O2

Two alternative synthesis procedures, i.e. co-precipitation and sol gel, have been used to prepare LiCo0.33Mn0.33Ni0.33O2 samples. Inductive coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used in order to determine the stoichiometry, the structural characteristic and the morphology of the materials. The results show that these samples obtained by sol gel have a high level of crystal defectivity, particularly in terms of Ni2+/Li+ cation mixing. We show that the defectivity reflects directly on electrochemical performances since lithium diffusion is hindered by nickel cations in the 3a sites as well as by a distorted structure. Then, co-precipitation samples have been selected as the most promising for battery application. The results confirm that this sample may be effectively used as cathode in advanced lithium ion polymer batteries formed by a Li4Ti5O12 anode and a PVdF LiPF6 EC:PC gel polymer electrolyte
