No full textRiallacciandosi alla prestigiosa tradizione sepolcrale greco-romana, Ausonio, poeta doctus quanto prolifico, negli Epitaphia heroum dedica ventisei carmi agli eroi morti nella guerra di Troia. Vi sono compresi non soltanto personaggi greci e troiani di grande rilievo, ma anche oscure e umbratili figure appartenenti ai contingenti troiani, così come alcune vittime imbelli, quali Ecuba e Polissena, o il piccolo Astianatte, travolti dai tragici effetti della caduta di Troia.
Partendo dal testo dell’edizione Green, di quest’opera qui si propone una nuova traduzione e un commento, che intende valorizzare in particolare l’uso sapiente di un vastissimo repertorio letterario, in cui spicca la memoria capitale di Virgilio, manipolata con sofisticata “tecnica centonaria"

No full textThis paper examines the Linear B tablet KN F(2) 852, which represents a source of
exceptional value for highlighting the agricultural strategies carried out by the Knossos palace
in LM IIIA2, and contributes to a clarifi cation of the topography of the western Messara.
Drawing on the information that this tablet provides, it is possible to argue for an
identifi cation of the unity GRA, even if the latter can only be exclusively referred to Crete
because of probable variation at a regional Mycenaean level. After taking into account
information referring to harvests and yields of land in the Messara in both the Venetian
period and the early twentieth century, a ratio of 1 : 5 and a harvest of 800-900 l/ha is
proposed as a medium value. Consequently, a seed density of 160-180 l/ha and a GRA unity
ranging between 0.53 and 0.60 ha can be inferred. The exceptional size of the da-wo harvest,
which is the only one in the Knossos archives and in the wider Mycenaean world to exceed
1,000 unities of GRA, should be emphasized. In fact, F(2) 852 is an exceptional registration
and cannot consequently be used to determine the farming economy of the other Mycenaean states, let alone Pylos, in the archive of which the harvest tablets are not attested

No full textIn commenting the celebrated passage of the Odyssey (VII 78-81) that describes the visit of the goddess Athena to the “well-built house of Erechtheus” on the Acropolis of Athens, scholars have focused on isolated features, such as the hapax legomenon name of the city in the singular accusative, or the attribute euryagyia. Other elements have been overlooked, such as the seemingly inconsistent route of the goddess from Scheria to Athens and the obscure mention of Marathon. This paper reappraises these elements to put forward a new interpretation of the passage. Rather than hinting at a Late Bronze Age origin, the unparalleled form of the city-name was necessary for metrical reasons, as it was modified by an attribute exclusively recurring in the singular to realize the fifth dactyl of the hexameter. The adjective euryagyia is used to equate Athens to both Mycenae and Troy in urban splendor and political importance. The reference to Marathon seems to imply that the goddess landed on the northeast coast of Attica, as if she were coming from Euboea or some other North Aegean island. This is entirely inconsistent with all the ancient traditions, which located the mythical island of Scheria at the westernmost limits of the world, but seems to hint at Peisistratus’ march in 547/6 BC, which started from Marathon and ledto his victory in the battle of Pallene. The author argues that Marathon is mentioned in this passage to acknowledge itsconnection with Peisistratus, and that the goddess Athena is accordingly represented as retracing Peisistratus’ route. This suggests that the passage is an interpolation of the 6th century BC
