PERSONALIZATION IN AUDIO STORYTELLING WITHIN VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY: STATE OF THE ART AND INSIGHTS
Storytelling and narrative are essential components in diverse contexts ranging from entertainment to culture and knowledge. With the progressive evolution of communcation, stories also started to be transmitted through digital media. In particular, the emerging and promising field of sonic interactions in virtual environments (SIVE) fosters the creation of immersive experiences in which personalization of user interaction and narrative content can help create engaging and interactive storytelling. The insights
presented here aim to define a state of the art of available interactive audio technologies for storytelling and to illustrate the role of audio in augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) personalized experiences by reviewing a selec-ion of published works. Moreover, we will try to disclose the most important elements enabling an immersive experience and to explain how interactivity, emotional and per-
sonalized content help convey messages in the context of serious storytelling. Finally, we will investigate the limitations of the available methods by also outlining some promising research directions
The Role of Audio in Immersive Storytelling: a Systematic Review in Cultural Heritage
Nowadays, Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies play a supportive role in many research fields. In cultural heritage, various examples are available, including storytelling and narratives, where they can provide immersive and enhanced experiences to visitors and tourists, especially for entertainment and educational purposes. This review aims to investigate the opportunities that soundscape design and advanced sonic interactions in virtual and augmented environments can bring to cultural heritage sites and museums in terms of presence, emotional content, and cultural dissemination. Nineteen-two papers have been identified through the PRISMA methodology, and a promising positive effect of sonic interaction on user experience in a virtual environment can be observed in various studies, notwithstanding a general lack of specific contributions on the use of sound rendering and audio spatialisation for improving such experiences. Moreover, this work identifies the main involved research areas and discusses the state-of-the-art best practices and case studies where sonic interactions may assume a central role. The final part suggests possible future directions and applications for more engaging and immersive storytelling in the cultural heritage domain

High fat diet intake during pre and periadolescence impairs learning of a conditioned place preference in adulthood
Abstract Background Brain regions that mediate learning of a conditioned place preference (CPP) undergo significant development in pre and periadolescence. Consuming a high fat (HF) diet during this developmental period and into adulthood can lead to learning impairments in rodents. The present study tested whether HF diet intake, consumed only in pre and periadolescence, would be sufficient to cause impairments using a CPP procedure. Methods Rats were randomly assigned to consume a HF or a low fat (LF) diet during postnatal days (PD) 21-40 and were then placed back on a standard lab chow diet. A 20-day CPP procedure, using HF Cheetos® as the unconditioned stimulus (US), began either the next day (PD 41) or 40 days later (PD 81). A separate group of adult rats were given the HF diet for 20 days beginning on PD 61, and then immediately underwent the 20-day CPP procedure beginning on PD 81. Results Pre and periadolescent exposure to a LF diet or adult exposure to a HF diet did not interfere with the development of a HF food-induced CPP, as these groups exhibited robust preferences for the HF Cheetos® food-paired compartment. However, pre and periadolescent exposure to the HF diet impaired the development of a HF food-induced CPP regardless of whether it was assessed immediately or 40 days after the exposure to the HF diet, and despite showing increased consumption of the HF Cheetos® in conditioning. Conclusions Intake of a HF diet, consumed only in pre and periadolescence, has long-lasting effects on learning that persist into adulthood.</p

»It contained harbours that pleased me like sonnets«. Kleine Poetik der diegetischen Karte
In this article, Federico Italiano explores the relationship between literature and cartography. Beginning with Stevenson’s Treasure Island, the author frames the topic through a general theoretical lens on the spatial dimension of literary texts. He then focuses on a specific phenomenon of literary "carticity"—the diegetic presence of the map, that is, the map as an integral element of the narrative structure. Among others, Italiano examines the works of Houellebecq and Cormac McCarthy
Diary extract of five research experiences in the XXXIV Italian doctoral cycle. Sharing common research questions on environment-oriented planning
In a time of renewal of the themes, interests, and applications of urban planning disciplines, is it possible to read continuity between the ongoing doctoral research? Despite Italian universities focused on project-making and urban planning, they often appear as closed groups, impermeable to external influences and synergies: still, examples of interdisciplinary syncretism and academic contamination could be found both in past research and emerging practices. Through the presentation of 5 research questions, developed by doctoral students from Italian universities, the paper is aimed to recognize a filrouge made up of common interests. The proposal is oriented to recognize, through analogies and common traits, the potential of interdisciplinary comparison and research networks. The opportunity for concertation among PhD students arises from the fruitful participation in urban studies training activities and workshops tailored to doctoral studies, and from a two-year exchange of ideas and perspectives. The dissertation themes include the identification of the wickedness of some crucial problems that contemporary environment-oriented planning is called upon to address. They relate specifically to the issues of climate-proof planning, resilience, action research processes, regeneration of peri-urban areas. After a theoretical definition of wickedness to which the authors refer, five Diary Extracts are presented and compared by highlighting: 1) the existing interconnections between research questions, objectives and methodologies, 2) the implications for research and practice in the field of environment-oriented planning. Finally, the essay provides further remarks on the learning opportunities grounded on sharing and contamination among young scholar researchers
