Intangible assets and competitiveness in Spain: an approach based on trademark registration data in Catalonia (1850-1946)
No full textThis paper studies the origins of trademark registration in Spain and offers, for the first time, data across sectors and regions with a long-term perspective. In apparent contradiction to the slow path of industrialization and the economic backwardness of Spain between 1850 and the 1940s, empirical evidence on trademark registration suggests that, in this field, Spanish policies and Spanish firms seemed to be well ahead of other countries. Spain was among the pioneering countries in the Western world in having a state legislation protecting brand registration since 1850. Also, some Spanish regions and industrialized sectors adopted similar strategies to those of its European counterparts in terms of using consistently branding and registered trademarks. Our evidence suggests that firms seem to have used brands and marks, first to fight against fraud and imitation and second to add intangible assets to its products in order to endow them with persistent identity trends regarding origins or quality of the product that were difficult to replicate, as often happened with patents. This created and accumulated, over that period of time, a marketing knowledge among consumers, which may have been useful to maintain the competitiveness of some industrial districts and regions.Intangible assets; Trade Marks; Brands; Catalonia, Spain.

Parodia y deporte en Quo Vadis, Sànchez?, de Francesc Trabal

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo estudiar la importancia de la parodia en Francesc Trabal a través del análisis de la novela Quo vadis Sànchez?, publicada en 1931. En primer lugar, se revisan las diferentes consideraciones que ha tenido la obra narrativa del autor por parte de la bibliografía precedente y, más adelante, se destaca la parodia como uno de los aspectos más relevantes que cabe considerar. Posteriormente, se describe el concepto de parodia y se analiza su efectividad en la novela trabaliana. Este análisis de la parodia en la novela de Trabal permite ver el juego de distanciamiento irónico de Trabal contra el modelo y los valores promovidos por la novela deportiva de la época.

Abstract:
The paper aims to study the importance of parody in Francesc Trabal through the analysis of the novel Quo Vadis, Sànchez?, published in 1931. Firstly, we examine the different considerations about the narrative work of the author shown in previous studies and, later, we underline parody as one of the most relevant aspects for examination. Subsequently, we describe the concept of parody and then we analyse its efficacy in this novel. The analysis of parody lets us understand Trabal’s game of ironic distance against the model and the values promoted by the sport novel from the period.

Banking the unbanked using prepaid platforms and mobile telephones in the United States
No full textThe rapid growth of mobile phone usage and the continuous rise in wireless coverage fuel the expectations that access to financial services trough mobile phones could transform the way financial services are provided. The emergence of new and more efficient business models, can potentially resolve supply inefficiencies that explain the large unbanked population that exists in the USA, much larger than in most developed countries. Nearly 40 million US households (approximately 73 million people) are financially underserved (CFSI, 2007), of which 15 million households (approximately 28 million people) are totally unbanked. This problem is explained by the non adequacy of the value proposals offered by financial institutions to the demands of the US customers. The areas of poor alignment refer mostly to the design of products and the marketing and distribution networks used. To resolve these misalignments, this paper will argue that business models based on prepaid cards as products and mobile phones as transactional and distribution channels could be used in order to close the supply gap. We will call the business model proposed based on prepaid products and mobile phones mobile banking, since these two elements are the basis of the business model used companies such as Smart Money and G-Cash in the Phillipines, Wizzit in South Africa and M-Pesa in Kenya.prepaid platform; unbanked; financial services; mobile phones; prepaid cards;
