Alkali Activation of Metakaolin and Wollastonite: Reducing Sodium Hydroxide Use and Enhancing Gel Formation through Carbonation
Abstract
Alkali activated materials (AAMs) offer significant advantages over traditional materials like Portland cement, but require the use of strong alkaline solutions, which can have negative environmental impacts. This study investigates the synthesis of AAMs using metakaolin and wollastonite, aiming to reduce environmental impact by eliminating sodium silicate and using only sodium hydroxide as an activator. The hypothesis is that wollastonite can provide the necessary silicon for the reaction, with calcium from wollastonite potentially balancing the negative charges usually countered by sodium in the alkaline solution. This study compares raw and carbonated wollastonite (AAM-W and AAM-CW) systems, with raw materials carefully characterized and binding networks analyzed using TGA, FT-IR, and XRD. The results show that while wollastonite can reduce the amount of sodium hydroxide needed, this reduction cannot exceed 50%, as higher substitution levels lead to an insufficiently alkaline environment for the reactions. The carbonation of wollastonite enhances the availability of silicon and calcium, promoting the formation of both N-A-S-H and C-A-S-H gels.Abstract

From slavery and colonialism to Black Lives Matter: New mood music or more fundamental change
PURPOSE 2020 has proved to be a challenging year. In addition to the challenges of Covid 19, yet again, the USA has witnessed police brutality leading to the death of a Black man, George Floyd. The Black Lives Matter movement, founded in the US but now an international organisation which challenge white supremacy and deliberate harm against Black people, mobilised hundreds of thousands of people to take to the streets, across the globe. Increasingly, the protests focus not only on George Floyd’s murder, but also the continued failure to challenge the celebrity of those involved in the transatlantic slave trade and European imperialism. In this article, I will contend that many organisations are now re-examining their association with these historical wrongs against Black Africa and its diaspora. Further, I will contend but that the failure to highlight the role of Black chattel slavery and imperialism in the accumulation of economic, commercial and political benefits reaped by the global north is a source of shame for many firms and institutions but also, universities. APPROACH I have reviewed the online media for the latest developments in response to Black Lives Matter’s George Floyd campaign in 2020, and reviewed literature on the link between European global ambition and its impact on the Americas and sub-Saharan Africa. FINDINGS Internationally, there is a discernible change in outlook towards the importance of the evils of slavery and colonialism on the Black experience today. These small steps will require scholars to embark on a fresh reexamination of race, society and work. For decades, the slave trade and colonialism were issues rarely raised in government, firms and business schools. This will inevitably change, especially in those countries that are the main beneficiaries of Black chattel slavery and colonial exploitation. Much EDI practice is fundamentally, tokenism. A root and branch reappraisal will be needed to created more effective EDI policy and practice in support of race equality and anti-racism
A review: Reaction mechanism and strength of slag and fly ash-based alkali-activated materials
Alkali-activated materials (AAM) are known to be environmentally friendly alternatives to cement-based materials because they can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reutilize industrial by-products/wastes. To study the factors influencing the strength of slag based alkali-activated materials (BFS-AAM), fly ash based alkali-activated materials (FA-AAM), slag, and fly ash-based alkali-activated materials (BFS/FA-AAM), and clarifying their reaction mechanisms, this paper reviews current knowledge about the mechanical properties and the reaction mechanisms of BFS-AAM, FA-AAM, and BFS/FA-AAM. The precursor requirements and the strength control factors are summarized. The control factors for the strength of BFS/FA-AAM are the BFS/binder ratio, the Na2O/binder ratio, the SiO2/Na2O ratio, and the w/binder ratio. Ion concentrations, determined by these control factors, play a decisive role in the development of strength. Generally, the strength is proportional to the BFS/FA ratio. The optimal values of the Na2O/binder ratio of BFS-AAM and FA-AAM are between 5.5% and 8% and between 7 and 10%, respectively. The optimal values of the SiO2/Na2O ratio of BFS-AAM and FA-AAM are between 0.85 and 1.4 and between 0.6 and 1, respectively. Increasing the w/binder ratio will only benefit workability but will affect the strength negatively. A w/binder ratio of around 0.4 may strike a balance between strength and workability.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Materials and Environmen
AAM - Politically Motivated Consumer Boycotts
This project contains the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) of the article accepted for publication in the Journal of Consumer Marketing. The study introduces Politically Motivated Consumer Boycotts (PMCBs) as a distinct form of political consumerism that emerges in response to brands’ perceived political alignment—particularly in polarized societies. Drawing on social movement theory and political consumerism literature, it examines the emergence and motivations behind such boycotts through a qualitative case study of the 2017 Pınar boycott in Turkey. The manuscript includes interview data, digital platform analysis, and a multi-level framework connecting macro-political context, digital mobilization, and consumer motivation.
The final Version of Record (VoR) will be available via the journal publisher (Elsevier). This version is shared here in accordance with the publisher's self-archiving policy
Kaidah ‘Aam, Khas dan Takhshish dalam Hukum Keluarga
Pronunciation is an expression with which one thing can be understood. However, the meaning of the pronunciation will be greatly influenced by something that goes hand in hand with it. The meaning of lafaz can mean aam (general), special (special), and Takhsis. This paper will explore how lafaz can mean am, distinctive, and takhsis, accompanied by an explanation of the rules/provisions that can influence it. This study uses the library research method, where later the author will explain the discussion by including examples from the Koran and Hadith to find a clearer understanding of a syara' proposition. The results of this study found that there are three family laws that have gone through the stages of the takhshish rule, where the existing 'aam' pronunciation from the syara' proposition is taken so that the meaning becomes narrower or limited.
