No full textThe primary aim of this thesis is to explore and critically interrogate Isabel Allende’s popularity cross-culturally in Britain and Spain. It analyses readers’ responses to Allende’s works as well as the discourses surrounding her public representation, an approach that is ‘readerly’ but must also take account of production and text. This approach is intended to further the understanding of Allende’s work which so far has always been analysed from a textual perspective. However, the relationship between Allende’s popularity, her texts, public representation and readers has not been yet analysed in detail.This thesis is innovative in other ways too. Methodologically, it approaches readers through the under studied cultural form of the reading group. It also incorporates a comparative dimension by looking at the reception of Allende in two different cultural contexts: the British and Spanish respectively. Finding out about Allende’s popularity has involved asking readers about their reading experiences as well as analysing the production of discourses around her public representation. Paul Ricoeur’s (1984, 1988) perspective on authorial intentions and readers’ responses to texts helps in understanding the intricacies surrounding what is involved in reading any text. It draws attention to Allende’s and her publishers’ authorial strategies, her ‘strategies of persuasion’ and the specificity of the lives and contexts of British and Spanish reading publics. Equally, this ‘readerly’ approach draws on feminist audience research and primarily on the work of Ien Ang and Janice Radway. Their work with viewers and readers respectively is particularly useful in establishing and developing methodological parameters for the study of reading groups. As a whole, this thesis contributes to the understanding of Allende’s cross-cultural popularity by situating readers at the centre

Cesar Prieto Martinez: o percurso da educação escolar e a modernização (1920-1924)
No full textIn this article, the objective is to understand the republican ideals in Paraná, Brazil, implemented by Cesar Prieto Martinez, which shaped the education reform at the beginning of the 20th century, the fight for the creation of school groups in Paraná, and the strengthening of Normal Schools during his time leading the General Inspectorate of Education. Primary sources used include pedagogical press and printed texts from the magazine “O Ensino” [The Teaching], specifically the issues from 1922, 1923, and 1924, which portrayed the ideals of the General Inspector of Education, Cesar Prieto Martinez, along with the messages of the Presidents of the State of Paraná from the 1920s and the Reports of the General Inspector of Education of Paraná. These documents demonstrate how significant Cesar Prieto Martinez’s presence was in educational management during the 1920s in Paraná, highlighting the struggle for the establishment of the first school groups and the first teacher training school in Ponta Grossa.

Normal School in Paraná.Neste artigo, objetiva-se compreender os ideais republicanos paranaenses, efetivados por Cesar Prieto Martinez, que marcaram a reforma da educação no início do século XX, a luta pela criação dos grupos escolares no Paraná e o fortalecimento das Escolas Normais no período em que esteve à frente da Inspetoria Geral do Ensino. Utilizaram-se como fontes primárias a imprensa pedagógica e os textos impressos da revista “O Ensino”, mais especificamente os exemplares de 1922, 1923 e 1924, os quais retrataram os ideais do Inspetor Geral de Ensino, Cesar Prieto Martinez, e as mensagens dos Presidentes do Estado do Paraná dos anos de 1920, além dos Relatórios do Inspetor Geral de Ensino do Paraná. Esses documentos demonstram o quanto foi marcante a presença de Cesar Prieto Martinez na gestão educacional na década de 1920 no Paraná, evidenciando a luta pela criação dos primeiros grupos escolares e a primeira escola de formação de professores em Ponta Grossa.
