Marketing, New Media and Consumer Segmentation

This Master Thesis analyzes the practices of marketing and segmentation from an Actor-network theory (ANT) perspective seeing the world as constructed and performed rather than given. The study contributes to the discussion around consumption and the creation or pre-existence of consumer ‘needs’. Interest is in developments within consumer segmentation practices and how new media has provided new possibilities for consumer data collection. A total of 11 interviews were conducted for understanding the practices of marketing and segmentation. Results show that marketers’ own ‘needs’ aiming for profitability are highly considered in segmentation studies working towards maximum commercial effectiveness. This research also demonstrates that surprisingly there is a great division between marketers and market researchers as these two groups can be considered highly diverse. Further, the limited role of new media technologies in segmentation practices was an unexpected research finding

City brand- and artistic community assemblage

This paper draws on Actor-Network (ANT) theory to research the relationship between the official city branding and local artistic practices of Rotterdam. ANT holds the view that the empirical world exists of all interaction between human or non-human actors that together create a network that is the assemblage of the social. The mixed method approach of qualitative document analysis, participant observations and interviews led to the following findings. Rotterdam’s branding practices exist of networks that that construct society through elements of branding theory, brand constructs, brand audiences with a specific role for citizen as a stakeholder in the city. Though more than that this leads to an integration of the worldviews of the city as a brand and the city as assembled by the local arts and culture community, the business oriented and economy focused approach of the city as a brand is perpetuated. Contrastingly, the arts and culture community of Rotterdam assemble the city through artistic endeavours and social networks that lead to the reinforcement of emotive relations to place in the form of place attachment and place identity. This paper concludes by stating that the two assemblages overlap only in limited ways in which they understand and produce the city, but they come together with a similar sense of place of Rotterdam. By shedding light on the way city branders and artistic communities interpret and ‘produce’ the city, these groups of people are better understood. The value here lies in bringing the different groups of citizens closer together for the benefit of the city as a whole

    The female game player revisited:

This research aimed to explore how female game journalists construct their identity as female gamers through an Actor-Network (ANT) approach. By gaining an understanding of the processes involved in identity construction, as well as the influences of technology on personal identity development, the following main research question was explored: “How do female game journalists construct their identity as female gamers?”. The research method consisted of a mixed qualitative methods analysis technique. Firstly, in-depth interviews were conducted with female game journalists within the Netherlands to gain an understanding in how they construct their identity as female gamers. Secondly, online articles written by the same female game journalists were also analyzed for exploring constructed identity online. Both methods were combined and processed through thematic analysis. The main findings in these research stated that discrimination is still ongoing within the gaming industry towards females. Hereby, female gamers as well as female game journalists have experienced stereotyping and social exclusion from male gamers and/or male peers within the gaming industry. However, an increase in acceptance towards female gamers and female gaming professionals was also expected and/or already sensed by the interviewees. Moreover, in-game storylines were indicated as impacting sense of personal morale as well as empathy towards in-game characters. Additionally, sociality through gaming enabled interviewees to explore their identity both inside groups, such as clans or guilds, as well as outside groups with strangers through MMOs and/or family and friends. These results overlapped with the explored online constructed identity from the interviewees as well. However, online interviewees voiced female gamer related topics in lesser extents compared to the interviews as a result of company restrictions in topics for articles. Ultimately, all interviewees indicated gaming as part of their everyday lives. They implemented all aspects of gaming into their daily routines and engage their personal environment with their interest in gaming as well. However, as female gamer identity construction has not been widely covered in female gamer studies, more attention is needed towards how identity construction emerges and how it is situated within relationships amongst human and nonhuman actors

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
