Diagnostic definition of cerebral lesions in a case of AIDS: importance of the use of magnetic resonance

    No full text
The present study describes a case of AIDS with asymptomatic intracranial focal lesions. The DDD-enhancement CT technique detected the lesions as inflammatory or neoplastic. A subsequent MR demontrated the vascular nature of the intracranial findings. MR in the neuropathology of AIDS can be of primary importance in the detection of the intracranial focal lesions, thus avoiding a cerebral stereotaxis needle biopsy

    [Oto-palato-digital syndrome. Clinico-radiological study].

Oto-palato-digital (OPD) or Tyabi syndrome is a familiar, X-linked bone dysplasia with intermediate expression, in females or autosomal dominant with more severe manifestations in males. In the past both the clinical features (flat face with sunken and broad nasal bridge, antimongoloid slant of palpebral fissures, palatoschysis, conductive deafness, short and broad thumbs and big toes, nail dystrophy) and radiological findings (thick and dense base of the skull, prominence of supraorbital ridges, middle ear bone deformities with dense ossicles, large and broad vertebral bodies, posterior defects of neural arches of the vertebrae, carpal and tarsal bone fusions, short and broad nail phalanges) have been well described and established. The present report describes 7 patients (4 females and 3 males) all belonging to the same family (the first described in this country) and all presenting the clinical and radiological features of OPD syndrome. A cranial and spinal CT was performed on one patient, with peculiar findings

Tridimensional computed tomography (TC 3D) in plastics: First personal experience

    No full text
Traditional diagnosis of craniofacial malformations is based on standard radiography, cephalometry and computed tomography. Tridimensional reconstructions (TC 3D) have been useful for a better clinical and therapeutic approach to the complex craniocephalic pathology. This study shows first experiences of use of 3D Siemens programme on Somatom HiQ in the Radiodiagnostic Department of Policlinico S. Matteo of Pavia. Pros and cons of such method in diagnostic and surgical planning of some traumatic, neoplastic and malformative pathologies are reported and discussed. Cephalic dyssymetries are more easily studied because of a better sight of skeletal and soft parts alterations. Better knowledge of relations between skeleton and adjoining soft parts and more accurate cephalometric mensurations, even considering prosthetic treatment, make preoperative planning easy. Limits of such a method are: necessity of sedation for pediatric patients, in order to get complete immobility; exposition to a relative high dose of radiations and some technical artifacts

    Lipomyelomeningoceles: A neuroradiological approach

    No full text
The results of a retrospective study of 10 cases of lipomyelomeningocele (LMML) and 4 cases of spinal lipoma in reoperated LMML observed over a 4-year period are reported. Patient's age ranged from 4 months to 12 years; a slight female predominance was noted (8:6). All patients underwent myelography, followed by CT-myelography in 11. MRI was performed in 1 patient. In 6 cases myelography and CT-myelography were performed under narcosis during the same session, while in the remaining cases CT scan followed myelography within 3 hours. Clinical features, divided into orthopaedic, urological and neurological deficits, were correlated with radiological findings divided into vertebral bone lesions, radicular lesions and spinal lesions. Since a complete neuro-radiological study is mandatory in the pre-operative phase to decide on the opportunity, type and timing of surgery, neuroradiological end-points are defined. The diagnostic pattern in these patients has to be carefully prepared through an interdisciplinary approach in order to reduce the anaesthesiological and surgical risks, while waiting for an ultrasound and MRI protocole as first-line examination

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
