The Social Desk for Human Rights as a Model of Integrated Reception: Personalized Pathways and Access to Services
Full text linkThe Social Desk for Human Rights at the Ospedale Civico Benfratelli in Palermo represents an
innovative model of integrated reception, capable of responding to the multidimensional needs of
foreigners in an urban context marked by socio-health inequalities. Through linguistic and cultural
mediation and collaborations between public institutions, the desk facilitates access to the National
Health Service SSN, the issuance of STP/ENI codes, and social counseling. Following theories on the
social determinants of health, the model activates empowerment processes and restores centrality to
the individual. Through a qualitative analysis, the study explores institutional synergies, the barriers
faced by migrants, and resilience strategies. It discusses critical issues such as resource shortages,
emphasizing the importance of a person-centered approach. The desk emerges as a space for

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Infectious diseases among foreign prisoners: results of a hospital-based management model in Palermo
Full text linkForeign prisoners have a high vulnerability in terms of morbidity and access to care in overcrowded Italian prisons. This paper presents and comments on the management model of infectious diseases in foreign prisoners at our outpatient clinic, in order to describe a model of management for these conditions. Overall, 133 subjects (mean age 35.5 years) from 29 countries were followed for a period of 15 years. The most commonly represented area of origin (54.1%) was the Maghreb region. HCV infection (40.6%), HIV (22.5%), HBV (9.8%) and co-infection (15%, HIV/HCV or HIV/HBV) were observed. Ten subjects had tuberculosis, and only 30% of them were compliant with the treatment. Only 46.3% of HCV mono-infected patients completed the entire diagnostic process and even a lower percentage (37%) of them took treatment regularly. 90% of HBV mono-infected patients and 84% of those HIV mono- and co-infected completed the diagnostic workout. 77% of patients in each group took therapy regularly. Overall, the results show limited effectiveness. Therefore, it would be necessary to improve communication between healthcare professionals and correctional systems. Moreover, it appears urgent to reduce overcrowding in prisons to limit morbidity in prisoners

Treating and caring for migrant populations suffering from infectious diseases: the experience of the hub&spoke network set up by the Civico Benfratelli ARNAS Hospital in Palermo (Sicily Region, Southern Italy)
No full textThis paper describes the experience carried out in a general hospital, implemented in collaboration with a city network of associations involved in the care of migrant populations. Considering the vulnerability of these populations, the difficulty of access to healthcare facilities, and the linguistic and cultural barriers, an organisational model was designed characterised by the concentration of highly complex care (hub centre) supported by a network of peripheral reception centres (spoke centres) responsible for selecting patients and sending them to the centre of reference with the aim of offering screening for sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, taking charge of pathologies, including non-infectious ones, treatment, and follow-up. The effectiveness of the model was measured in relation to the continuum of care and its effectiveness with reference to the Joint Commission International guidelines
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
