Introduction
This chapter provides an overview of the context within which this edited collection has been compiled. It is impossible to present these chapters without acknowledging the turmoil that we and the arts sector have experienced over the past two years. The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on the arts, both in terms of the nature of employment, the importance of “live” consumption, and the potential that new technologies offer for connecting artists to audiences. This chapter briefly engages with these issues before providing a summary of the seventeen chapters in this volume. These chapters provide insight into the mechanisms of marketing of artforms such as film, music, dance, visual art and theatre. Additionally, they demonstrate the utility of arts-based methods (such as poetic and participatory art-based methods) in undertaking research, particularly in areas of emotional complexity and sensitivity. Finally, our contributors bring us to various corners of the world from Africa to Latin American, Asia, Australia, and Europe
Poetic orientation for creating and writing
I hope this journey to certain Latin American textures inspires you to nourish your artist within and helps you heal from the demands and pressures of academia. This chapter offers, here and there, a micro transformational oasis of restful inspiration. I will be reflecting on my experience of becoming an author of good enough poems (Lahman and Richard, 2014). I will draw on my research on migration to unveil the backstage of my work and let the reader become familiar with the orienting power of poetry and its potential to unlock our creative confidence. <br/
Crafting the Game World:Creative Communities and Participatory Culture in Elden Ring
This chapter explores the intersection of consumer creativity and participatory culture within the Elden Ring fan community. I utilize a netnographic study of the Elden Ring subreddit to explore how players collectively engage with the game’s open-world design, nonlinear narrative, and challenging gameplay to create and share original content. Through the examination of fan practices such as lore crafting, character building, and multiplayer etiquette, the study demonstrates how platforms like Reddit generate a participatory culture that fosters a community-enhanced gaming experience. By engaging with the game and each other, players co-create new meanings and gameplay, pushing the boundaries of game design and developing the Elden Ring community identity and experience over time
Marketing Through Art:The Case of Branded Entertainment
Marketing and specifically advertising have been long capitalising on entertainment media and the cultural industries to sell products and services, and to expand to new markets. However, due to the continuous technological developments and changing consumer demands, marketers and the media are faced with finding innovative ways to reach consumers. In cultural production, where arts and marketing coincide, cultural intermediaries like marketers behave as marketplace actors to pervade cultural artefacts with augmented symbolic meaning. This chapter explores branded entertainment as an increasingly popular and prominent form of marketing communications within the creative industries. In doing so, we apply a sociocultural approach to branding and through the concept of the film marketing brandscape, we discuss how creative and commercial interests increasingly merge. We provide an overview of the development from product and brand placements to branded entertainment and consider wider macro perspectives by highlighting the importance of a stakeholder framework for branded entertainment. In doing so, we discuss the following stakeholders: the brand, the producer, the platforms, the agency, talent, and the audience. We conclude the chapter by highlighting issues of transparency and draw attention to ethical implications, presenting further avenues for future research
Music Festivals and the Everyday Nature of Extraordinary Experiences
This chapter focuses on live music and music festival experiences and their conceptual treatment to date in the marketing and consumer research literature. We highlight the variety of ways in which music festivals have been hitherto theorised and we further identify two distinct conceptual strands which revolve around their extraordinary experiential nature. In contrast to standard conceptualisations, we argue that contemporary music festivals can be also perceived as significant places of societal ritualisation which are positioned within the confines of everyday life and the logics of specific music fields and scenes. In doing so, we extend O'Reilly et al.'s (2013) characteristics of the form and function of music festivals and highlight their role for music consumers, professionals, and scenes. We conclude by drawing theoretical implications and identifying potential areas for future research at the intersection of arts marketing, music, and experiential consumption
Creative practices in vintage retailing
This is a story about why and how stuff matters. It’s a story about vintage consumption and its contemporary relevance and how consumption morphs into production, in this case through the transformative moment of creative vintage retailing. It’s a story about entrepreneurial women who buy and sell vintage and a story about ‘fulfilling ambition’. It’s a story of thrifty finds, a story of treasure troving. It’s also a story of colour, style and floral motifs! It’s a story of aesthetic and affective labour. It’s a story about how recycling the past can provide inspiration for rethinking the present. In this sense, it deals with the cultural logic of vintage retailing as glimpsed through the lens of shifting contexts and conjunctures. Finally, it’s a story of consumers as creative improvisers who are busy recycling old ideals; and who, when they find a cultural form which is able to reframe their actions, tend to run with it. I utilise non-representational theory (post-structuralism) to make sense of how creativity works in such fragile retail encounters
Consuming Cuba through dance:An embodied ethnography of salsa
My contribution to our ongoing conversations in arts marketing focuses on how cultural outputs can be used to project alluring images for a nation, turning my attention to dance as an inherently embodied artform. I flesh out how our consumption of kinetic cultural expressions, such as dance, shape our understanding of places and people, making them powerful ways of knowing. Specifically, I unpack the embodied consumption of Cuba's primary cultural export – salsa – and argue that through the embodiment of salsa we also embody the nation, incarnating the culture and essence of the island through and with our dancing bodies. Using an embodied ethnography, which included active participation in salsa dancing communities outside of Cuba as well as embodied tourism of salsa with an immersive dance holiday on the island itself, my chapter foregrounds the power of the body when consuming culture and the power of culture when branding nations. Following Wacquant's (2015) carnal sociology, my findings reveal how my skilled, suffering, sentient, sedimented and situated body acts as a site of corporeal knowhow as I embody movement, musicality, and togetherness within this economy of intimacy
Selling Secrets:The role of "Elusivity" in the Liminoid Invitations of Immersive Theatre
In this chapter I examine the role that secrecy, exclusivity, and productive participation play in producing the condition of “elusivity” that I argue is at the heart of the immersive theatre marketing landscape. In examining the marketing practices of immersive performance, I suggest that the liminoid invitations of such dramaturgies generate a symbiotic relationship between secrecy, exclusivity, and productivity to generate a peculiar veil of “elusivity”, The marketing practices of this wilfully mysterious field of theatre practice have been somewhat overlooked in scholarship but over the course of the chapter I work to begin lifting the curtain and explicate the nature of the strategies that those experiential dramaturgies produce
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
