Psychological type and prayer preferences: a study among Anglican clergy in the United Kingdom
This study applies the framework of Jungian psychological type theory to define eight aspects of prayer preference, namely: introverted prayer, extraverted prayer, sensing prayer, intuitive prayer, feeling prayer, thinking prayer, judging prayer, and perceiving prayer. On the basis of data provided by 1,476 newly ordained Anglican clergy from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, eight 7-item scales were developed to access these aspects of prayer preferences. Significant correlations were found between each prayer preference and the relevant aspect of psychological type accessed by the Keirsey Temperament Sorter. These data support the theory that psychological type influences the way in which people pray
Multiple scattering of light in optical diagnostics of dense sprays and other complex turbid media
Sprays and other industrially relevant turbid media can be quantitatively and qualitatively characterized using modern optical diagnostics. However, current laser
based techniques generate errors in the dense region of sprays due to the multiple scattering of laser radiation e ected by the surrounding cloud of droplets. In most industrial
sprays, the scattering of light occurs within the so-called intermediate scattering regime
where the average number of scattering events is too great for single scattering to be
assumed, but too few for the di usion approximation to be applied. An understanding
and adequate prediction of the radiative transfer in this scattering regime is a challenging
and non-trivial task that can significantly improve the accuracy and e ciency of optical
measurements. A novel technique has been developed for the modelling of optical radiation propagation in inhomogeneous polydisperse scattering media such as sprays. The
computational model is aimed to provide both predictive and reliable information, and
to improve the interpretation of experimental results in spray diagnostics. Results from
simulations are verified against the analytical approach and validated against the experiment by the means of homogeneous solutions of suspended polystyrene spheres. The
ability of the technique to simulate various detection conditions, to di erentiate scattering orders and to generate real images of light intensity distributions with high spatial
resolution is demonstrated. The model is used for the real case of planar Mie imaging
through a typical hollow cone water spray. Versatile usage of this model is exemplified
with its applications to image transfer through turbid media, correction of experimental
Beer-Lambert measurements, the study of light scattering by single particles in the farfield region, and to simulate the propagation of ultra-short laser pulses within complex
scattering media. The last application is fundamental for the development and testing
of future optical spray diagnostics; particularly for those based on time-gating detection
such as ballistic imaging
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Why is world private agribusiness R&D declining despite increased demand for food and biofuels?
This paper examines the reason why the R&D expenditure of private agribusiness companies remains unchanged in the last decade despite of the growth in demand for food and biofuels. I review the background of worldwide food demand and agribusiness R&D undertaken by the private sector, as well as a literature on the private agricultural R&D, including induced innovation theory, important determinants of R&D and the relationship between public and private R&D. We undertake an empirical investigation of the roles played by a series of determinants of innovation system and R&D activities in private companies. We apply the concept of induced innovation in response to factors changes. We identify a total of 47 agribusiness companies which have R&D data from 1994 to 2007, including 36 US- based companies and other 11 international corporations. The result shows that decreasing government R&D input and companies size in agribusiness marketing and increasing four-firm concentration ratio might be the main reasons to lead to decreased private sector R&D activities; biotechnology patents, food price index and index of worldwide intellectual property protection are not significant in determining the R&D and its intensity.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Beinan Zhan
