Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Get PDFDissertação de Mestrado em Medicina VeterináriaLa dermatite atopique canine est une des pathologies les plus souvent rencontrées en consultation de dermatologie vétérinaire. Dans ce travail, 78 cas vus par le Docteur Prélaud ont été sélectionnés pour une étude rétrospective, afin de cerner l’évolution de la maladie au fil des années. L’analyse de la population étudiée se révèle conforme au descriptif habituel de cette pathologie. Les facteurs de pronostic étudiés montrent que l’âge d’apparition de la maladie est lié à sa gravité. Les différents traitements utilisés ne semblent pas influencer l’évolution au long cours de la maladie. Comme on peut le supposer, la compréhension de la maladie par les propriétaires n’est pas toujours parfaite et seuls les éléments les plus spectaculaires sont retenus. Les échecs sont essentiellement dus à une démotivation des propriétaires ou des vétérinaires traitants, ce qui met illustre l'importance de la charnière vétérinaire référant/vétérinaire spécialiste dans le suivi au long cours de maladies pérennes.A dermatite atopica canina é uma das patologias mais frequentes em dermatologia veterinária. No presente trabalho, foram incluídos de forma retrospectiva 78 cães diagnosticados pelo Doutor Prélaud, com o objectivo de determinar a evolução da doença ao longo dos anos. Os nossos resultados, no que respeita à análise descritiva da população estudada (idade, raça, sexo,…), são similares ao descrito na literatura para esta doença. Os factores de prognóstico estudados mostram que a idade de aparição da doença está relacionada com a sua gravidade. Os diferentes tratamentos usados não parecem influenciar a evolução do quadro clinico. Com este estudo constatamos que esta doença não é claramente entendida pelo proprietário e, muitas vezes, ele só recorda os elementos a que o seu cão é alérgico, esquecendo toda a sintomatologia associada, assim como não sendo capaz de descrever o evoluir da doença. O fracasso do tratamento está relacionado com a desmotivação dos proprietarios ou dos próprios médicos veterinários, o que mostra a importancia da relação entre o médico veterinário que acompanha o animal e o especialista em dermatologia, no acompanhamento desta doença crónica.Canine atopic dermatitis is one of the most commonly pathology met in veterinary dermatology clinic. Seventy-eight dogs seen by Dr. Prélaud were selected for a retrospective study, in order to discern disease evolution with the passing of years. Studied population analysis reveals to be in conformity with normal description of this pathology. Studied forecast factors show that the age in which the disease appears is tied to its severity. Various therapy administration used don't seem to influence disease evolution within years. As one can suppose it, disease understanding by the owners is not always perfect and only most spectacular elements are retained. Failures are mostly due to owners or attending veterinarian’s demotivation, which illustrates the importance of the attendant veterinary/veterinary specialist link in perennial diseases long course follow-up
Contribution to the study of feline pemphigus foliaceus

Neste trabalho, foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo de onze casos diagnosticados de pênfigo foliáceo na espécie felina, durante um período de três anos na clínica ADVETIA. O início das lesões variou de menos de 1 ano a 10 anos de idade, mediana de 5 anos. Os sinais clínicos observados incluíram crostas (n=11), paroníquia (n=7), erosões (n=4) e alopécia (n=4). As lesões foram mais frequentes nas pregas ungueais (n=7), pavilhão auricular externo (n=7) e/ou pavilhão auricular interno (n=3), plano nasal (n=3) e nariz (n=3). A avaliação citológica em 7 casos demonstrou a presença de queratinócitos acantolíticos. No exame histológico de 4 biópsias observaram-se queratinócitos acantolíticos e crostas neutrofílicas (n=2). Num caso não foi observado acantólise activa. Todos os casos foram seguidos por 1 a 49 meses. A maioria dos casos (n=9) atingiram remissão completa com tratamento imunosupressor. Apenas um gato foi eutanasiado, devido ao desenvolvimento de sinais sistémicos durante a terapia.Pemphigus foliaceus is the most common auto-immune skin disease in cats. No age, breed or sex predisposition are reported.
A retrospective study of eleven cats diagnosed for pemphigus foliaceus over a period of three years in “ADVETIA” clinic was performed. Age at onset ranged from less than 1 year to 10 years, median 5 years. Clinical signs of the disease included crusts (n=11), paronychia (n=7), erosions (n=4) and alopecia (n=4). Lesions were most common on claw folds (n=7), outer pinnae (n=7) and/or inner pinnae (n=3), nasal planum (n=3) and muzzle (n=3). Cytologic evaluation revealed acantholytic keratinocytes in 7 cats. The histological examination of 4 biopsy specimens revealed acantholytic keratinocytes and neutrophilic crusts (n=2). Active acantholysis was not observed in 1 case. All cases were followed for 1 to 49 months. Most cats (n=9) achieved total remission with immunosuppressive treatment. Only one cat died due to systemic signs development during therapy
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
