Environmental Contracts in Marine Protected Areas. Methodology and pilote cases from TUNE UP

    No full text
This issue of leNote di U3 is an intermediate output of the project Interreg MED TUNE UP - Promoting multilevel governance for tuning up biodiversity protection in marine areas, which faces the need for a strategic and collaborative approach to Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) management and biodiversity protection. The core idea of the project is to exploit the feasibility and lexibility of the Environmental Contract methodology in Med MPAs. This document has been developed in the framework of ‘WP4 - Transferring’ under the coordination of the Department of Architecture of Roma Tre University and with the contribution of all partners in order to transfer the tested methodology beyond this project partnership. It resumes the main steps and phases faced by the TUNE UP partnership, coordinated by ANATOLIKI SA, in the implementation of 10 MPA Contracts in Mediterranean countries

Dialysis-dependent renal failure at diagnosis continues to be associated with very poor outcome in multiple myeloma - response to Murphy et al

    No full text
The study by Murphy et al supports the observation made by several groups regarding the benefit of the novel agents in both young and elderly patients affected by multiple myeloma (MM) (Kumar et al, 2008; Ludwig et al, 2008; Turesson et al, 2010; Pozzi et al, 2013). Their single institution data collected over 18 years in 262 patients shows an improvement in overall survival (OS) starting from 1995 with an OS not yet reached in the period 2007–2012, after the introduction of bortezomib in their clinical practice. However the study clearly highlights renal insufficiency as a very poor prognostic factor, with a median OS shorter than 1 year in patients requiring dialysis. In the past few years many attempts have been made to classify and stratify patients based on various refined biological characteristics, however, as clearly stated here, the clinical presentation, particularly organ damage, still represents a negative prognostic factor that not even modern medicine has been able to overcome. The introduction of the International Staging System Criteria (ISS) (Greipp et al, 2005) only indirectly takes renal function into account, while the Durie and Salmon Criteria differentiates stage ‘A’ and ‘B’ MM based on kidney damage (Durie & Salmon, 1975). However Durie-Salmon ‘B’ stage is based on a creatinine cut-off point of 177 lmol/l and it is unable to better differentiate between moderate and severe impairment of renal damage requiring dialysis. It is also unable to predict the response to the treatment and reversibility of the organ damage, between possibly transitory kidney impairment due to dehydration, hyperuricaemia and hypercalacemia, and cast nephropathy. In this subset of MM patients it would be beneficial to introduce further parameters in the staging system (i.e. glomerular filtrate; type of light chain) in order to better stratify the risks and prevent treatment-related toxicity. For this reason, ad hoc clinical trials for this group of patients are strongly needed (Haynes et al, 2012). Finally, the Murphy study highlights the selection of patients enrolled in clinical trials and the necessity to evaluate the survival in the population of every day clinical practice, together with the need to develop high resolution analysis from data collected by cancer registers. Moreover, early diagnosis, compared with late or misdiagnosis, especially for light chains MM, is mandatory to prevent severe organ damage

Identifying the characteristics of peri-urban agriculture in Lombardy

    No full text
The objectives of this paper are to define urban/rural systems in Lombardy and to analyse the rates of land uptake, increase in urbanisation and agricultural soil loss, and the characteristics of agriculture in these systems. In particular, the authors first identify the urban/rural systems using both traditional statistical techniques and spatial classification techniques. They then examine the different trends of land uptake and increase in urban areas by municipality in the different systems, by using the Land Use Database of the Lombardy Region for the years 1954, 1999 and 2007. They subsequently link these changes to the distribution of the socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics, industrial and infrastructure development, employment and agricultural structure (location and characteristics of farms) to analyse the causes and consequences of land use change in Lombardy, and to characterize the agricultural structure in the urban/rural systems

Specification and implementation of exceptions in workflow management systems

    No full text
Although workflow management systems are most applicable when an organization follows standard business processes and routines, any of these processes faces the need for handling exceptions, i.e., asynchronous and anomalous situations that fall outside the normal control flow. In this paper we concentrate upon anomalous situtations that, although unusual, are part of the semantics of workflow applications, and should be specified and monitored coherently; in most real-life applications, such exceptions affect a significant fraction of workflow cases. However, very few workflow management systems are integrated with a highly expressive language for specifying this kind of exception and with a system component capable of handling it. We present Chimera-Exc, a language for the specification of exceptions for workflows based on detached active rules, and then describe the architecture of a system, called FAR, that implements Chimera-Exc and integrates it with a commercial workflow management system and database server. We discuss the main issues that were solved by our implementation, and report on the performance of FAR. We also discuss design criteria for exceptions in light of the formal properties of their execution. Finally, we focus on the portability of FAR on its unbundling to a generic architecture with detached active rules.</jats:p

Who is the author of the 1876 Stefano manuscript?

    No full text
For over one hundred years the Stefano manuscript was a private document in the possession of the Baccich family and descendants. It told a story of the 1875 Stefano shipwreck as narrated by the shipwreck survivor and the founding family patriarch Miho Baccich. In these circumstances the question of authorship of the manuscript was immaterial and did not arise as an issue. However, with the publication of the manuscript the author‟s name, or names, need to be formally attributed to it. It turns out that this is not such a clear-cut matter. As we shall see, all informed sources attributed the authorship, and the ownership, of the manuscript to Miho Baccich. But the manuscript itself was written by Canon Stjepan Skurla – a priest from Miho‟s hometown of Dubrovnik. The question then arises: should Skurla also be considered as an author of the manuscript, or, even as the sole author (as some would have it)

Exploring the main characteristics of urban/rural systems, and of their agricultures

The importance of spatial differentiation of agricultural policies is underlined by the European Union in its Pillar II of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), that aims at promoting “the diversification of economic activity and quality of life in rural areas” as well as finding means “to allow for structural diversity in the farming systems, improve the conditions for small farms and develop local markets”. It is widely known that there exist different agricultures in Lombardy, as well as in Italy and in Europe, and that identifying and characterising them is the fundamental basis for the development of appropriate sectorial policies and the growth of the agricultural and non-agricultural economy. Traditional classification systems in the EU or its application in Italy however are often focused on the more urbanized areas or do not capture the diversity within and between the complex urban and rural systems on a spatial basis. In Italy, and more specifically in Lombardy, there is a history of research institutions have worked towards a classification of agricultural systems. The Lombardy region itself has included a classification of rural areas in its most recent Rural Development Program 2007-2012. None of these studies however examine the characteristics of the linkages between urban and rural. A recent work uses a simple methodology based on the OECD method, but including additional variables at the municipality level in order to classify different rural systems, but again, does not take into account the linkages between urban and rural areas. Our objective is then to explore how to implement an adequate and representative classification of territorial systems for the development of regional policies, with a particular attention to the agricultural/rural dimension in the Lombardy region, which represents an excellent case-study because of its complexity
