    A collar lemma for partially hyperconvex surface group representations

    We show that a collar lemma holds for Anosov representations of fundamental groups of surfaces into SL(n,R) that satisfy partial hyperconvexity properties inspired from Labourie's work. This is the case for several open sets of Anosov representations not contained in higher rank Teichmüller spaces, as well as for Φ-positive representations into SO(p, q) if p ≥ 4. We moreover show that 'positivity properties' known for Hitchin representations, such as being positively ratioed and having positive eigenvalue ratios, also hold for partially hyperconvex representations

    Maximal representations, non Archimedean Siegel spaces, and buildings

    Let FF be a real closed field. We define the notion of a maximal framing for a representation of the fundamental group of a surface with values in Sp(2n,F)Sp(2n,F). We show that ultralimits of maximal representations in Sp(2n,R)Sp(2n,R) admit such a framing, and that all maximal framed representations satisfy a suitable generalisation of the classical Collar Lemma. In particular this establishes a Collar Lemma for all maximal representations into Sp(2n,R)Sp(2n,R). We then describe a procedure to get from representations in Sp(2n,F)Sp(2n,F) interesting actions on affine buildings, and, in the case of representations admitting a maximal framing, we describe the structure of the elements of the group acting with zero translation length

    Vector-valued Distance and Gyrocalculus on the Space of Symmetric Positive Definite Matrices

    We propose the use of the vector-valued distance to compute distances and extract geometric information from the manifold of symmetric positive definite matrices (SPD), and develop gyrovector calculus, constructing analogs of vector space operations in this curved space. We implement these operations and showcase their versatility in the tasks of knowledge graph completion, item recommendation, and question answering. In experiments, the SPD models outperform their equivalents in Euclidean and hyperbolic space. The vector-valued distance allows us to visualize embeddings, showing that the models learn to disentangle representations of positive samples from negative ones

    Bridgeman–Taylor (Math. Ann. 341 (2008), 927–943) and McMullen (Invent. Math. 173 (2008), 365–425) showed that the Weil–Petersson metric on Teichmüller space can be realized by looking at the infinitesimal change of the Hausdorff dimension of certain quasi-Fuchsian deformations. In this article, we give a similar geometric interpretation of the spectral gap pressure metric introduced by Bridgeman–Canary–Labourie–Sambarino (Geom. Dedicata 192 (2018), 57–86) on the Hitchin component for (Formula presented.). More generally, we investigate the Hessian of the Hausdorff dimension as a function on the space of (1,1,2)-hyperconvex representations, a class introduced in (J. reine angew. Math. 774 (2021), 1–51) which includes small complex deformations of Hitchin representations and of (Formula presented.) -positive representations. As another application, we prove that the Hessian of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set at the inclusion (Formula presented.) is positive definite when (Formula presented.) is co-compact in (Formula presented.) (unless (Formula presented.) and the deformation is tangent to (Formula presented.))

    Symmetric Spaces for Graph Embeddings: A Finsler-Riemannian Approach

    Learning faithful graph representations as sets of vertex embeddings has become a fundamental intermediary step in a wide range of machine learning applications. We propose the systematic use of symmetric spaces in representation learning, a class encompassing many of the previously used embedding targets. This enables us to introduce a new method, the use of Finsler metrics integrated in a Riemannian optimization scheme, that better adapts to dissimilar structures in the graph. We develop a tool to analyze the embeddings and infer structural properties of the data sets. For implementation, we choose Siegel spaces, a versatile family of symmetric spaces. Our approach outperforms competitive baselines for graph reconstruction tasks on various synthetic and real-world datasets. We further demonstrate its applicability on two downstream tasks, recommender systems and node classification

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
