An “author pays” publishing model is the only fair way to make biomedical research findings accessible to all, say Matthew Kurien and David S Sanders, but James J Ashton and R Mark Beattie worry that it can lead to bias in the evidence base towards commercially driven results

    Cult: A Composite Novel

    No full text
Cult (redacted) The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence. Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults. The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic. Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts

As part of the "Zoom Sabbath" meeting, which was held regularly every Friday during the Coronavirus pandemic via the zoom platform, on May 7, 2021, a meeting entitled "Kabbalah - Jewish Mysticism, Meaning and Influence" was held. On that occasion, the edition of the first and second volumes of the book " ZOHAR - The Book of Shine" published by "Metafizika" from Belgrade was presented. Davor Salom gave the introductory speech as the moderator of the lecture. The guests at the lecture were Dražen Zev Pekušić, an information technology engineer and programmer and a great lover of the written word of Judaism and writer Filip David. Dražen Pekušić, who is involved in the Zohar project as an editor of Hebrew / Aramaic words and expressions and the author of the preface, presented this project, also announcing the publishing of a total of 23 volumes of this edition in the Serbian language. Then Philip David spoke about this book, as well as about his personal experience and first contacts with Kabbalah and mysticism and their presence in the literature of numerous writers. Other participants in this meeting also spoke about Kabbalah, its system, the rabbis who dealt with it, and especially Martin Buber.Trajanje 32:52 minuta (duration 32:52 minutes)

Similarity between class A and class B G-protein-coupled receptors exemplified through calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor modelling and mutagenesis studies

Modelling class B G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) using class A GPCR structural templates is difficult due to lack of homology. The plant GPCR, GCR1, has homology to both class A and class B GPCRs. We have used this to generate a class A–class B alignment, and by incorporating maximum lagged correlation of entropy and hydrophobicity into a consensus score, we have been able to align receptor transmembrane regions. We have applied this analysis to generate active and inactive homology models of the class B calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor, and have supported it with site-directed mutagenesis data using 122 CGRP receptor residues and 144 published mutagenesis results on other class B GPCRs. The variation of sequence variability with structure, the analysis of polarity violations, the alignment of group-conserved residues and the mutagenesis results at 27 key positions were particularly informative in distinguishing between the proposed and plausible alternative alignments. Furthermore, we have been able to associate the key molecular features of the class B GPCR signalling machinery with their class A counterparts for the first time. These include the [K/R]KLH motif in intracellular loop 1, [I/L]xxxL and KxxK at the intracellular end of TM5 and TM6, the NPXXY/VAVLY motif on TM7 and small group-conserved residues in TM1, TM2, TM3 and TM7. The equivalent of the class A DRY motif is proposed to involve Arg 2.39 , His 2.43 and Glu 3.46 , which makes a polar lock with T 6.37 . These alignments and models provide useful tools for understanding class B GPCR function. </jats:p
