The article offers an analysis of the five most popular Slovene YouTubers, based on the number of their subscribers. The speakers’ characteristics were collected by means of a survey. Language analysis was used to determine the variety of language spoken in YouTube videos. YouTube’s special public speaking position, the preparation and privacy of the content were also taken into account

Communication habits of students and their language choices in SMS and similar text messages
Pogoste jezikovne značilnosti sporočil so angleške kratice, nestandardna raba ločil in velike začetnice, neuporaba šumnikov, zapis besed po izgovoru, izpuščanje samoglasnikov, narečne značilnosti in pogovorni besedni red. The aim of this master’s thesis is to find out what students’ habits are when communicating remotely, what are the characteristics of the language used in SMS and text messages on mobile messaging apps, and what is the role of English in students\u27 messages. An analysis of 3,900 messages from students at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, was carried out, with special attention to the differences between students of Slovene, students of English and students studying other subjects. In addition, a survey was conducted on their communication habits. Longer conversations of six students were also analysed to put the students’ communication in a broader context. Students communicate mainly through text messages, adapting the way they communicate to the addressees and to different intentions. Messages tend to be short, and individuals often split their replies into several messages. Common linguistic features of the messages include English abbreviations, non-standard use of punctuation and capitalisation, non-use of diacritics, phonetic spelling, omission of vowels, dialectal features, and colloquial word order. English was used in a quarter of the messages, but the proportion of English words was in fact lower (7.82%). Most English words have an English spelling, followed by English words that are slovenized in writing, and the fewest English words have an English spelling with Slovene affixes added. As expected, students of English use the most English words, while students of Slovene use the fewest, and they use English words slovenized in writing more often than the other two groups. In general, it has been shown that communication habits and the language used in the messages are very individual and that differences between individuals are already visible even in such a homogeneous group as the students of the Faculty of Arts
Pogoste jezikovne značilnosti zasebnih medvrstniških sporočil so nestandardna raba ločil in velike začetnice, neuporaba šumnikov, zapis besed po izgovoru, izpuščanje samoglasnikov, neknjižni jezik in pogovorni besedni red. This article examines university students’ remote communication habits and language used in texting and writing messages in mobile apps. A total of 3,900 messages by students at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Arts were analyzed, and a survey of their communication habits was carried out. To place their communication within a wider context, ten lengthy conversations were also analyzed. Most students communicate with one another remotely through messages, adapting their communication to the addressee and messaging purpose. Their messages are mostly short, and they usually break up their replies into several messages. The common features of private messages between peers include non-standard use of punctuation and capitalization, absence of diacritics, spelling words based on how they are pronounced, omitting vowels, and using non-standard Slovenian and colloquial word order
Spoken and textual aspects of YouTube videos
V diplomski nalogi so najprej podrobneje
Podrobneje so
analizirani po trije videoposnetki s petih kanalov z največ naročniki. Z metodo anketiranja so
bili pridobljeni osnovni podatki o govorcih ter njihov odnos do jezika. Govor analiziranih
youtuberjev je pretežno neknjižen in prepleten z angleškim izrazjem. Ugotovljeno je, da na
(ne)knjižnost govora, dolžino povedi, hitrost govora in prisotnost mašil vplivajo naslednji
dejavniki: vnaprejšnja pripravljenost vsebine oziroma spontanost, resnost in zahtevnost
vsebine, prisotnost sogovornikov, postprodukcija in osebna odločitev o tem, kakšen jezik
uporabljati.Worldwide web enables each user to become a creator of content, but in contrast to other media,
there are no restrictions on who can upload and what they can upload. Youtube is one of the
most popular social media that allows anyone with a working camera and internet connection
to not just view but also upload videos. People who regularly contribute copyrighted content
are thus called "youtubers". In this thesis, what is first presented are Slovene Youtube channels
with more than twenty-five thousand subscribers. Then I provided in-depth analysis of three
videos from each of the five Slovene Youtube channels with most subscribers. By using a
survey method, I assessed basic information about speakers in videos and their attitude towards
language. Speech of Youtubers that were analysed in this thesis is mostly informal and full of
English vocabulary. Final conclusion was that (in)formal speech, length of the sentence, speech
rate and presence of fillers depend on different parameters: preparation of content in advance,
spontaneity, formality, complexity of content, presence of multiple speakers, post production
of each video and personal decision on what kind of language to use
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Instapoezija
The article deals with the phenomenon of Instapoetry, which is characterised by brevity and simplicity and centred around an accompanying visual image. Ten Slovene authors of Instapoetry were analysed, and they also answered a lengthy questionnaire about their attitude towards poetry and Instagram. Analysis shows several traits of Instapoetry: the theme of love, the absence of motifs and rhetorical figures, minimalism, usage of lowercase letters, and the message being conveyed in a word which is written in italics
Bolj ali manj knjižno: Problemi jezikovne analize računalniško posredovane neformalne komunikacije
One of the methodological problems in the linguistic analysis of informal computer-mediated communication and online texts is how to analyse them in terms of standard or non-standard language varieties. A review of published articles shows a tendency to analyse such texts on the basis of deviation from the standard norm and to categorise them into specific language varieties, often without taking the broader context into account. In the empirical part, the results of the classification of text messages by university students into four different groups based on the degree of (non-)standardness are presented. The results show that: i) the perception of standard or non-standard language depends on linguistic and contextual factors as well as on the intention of the language users, ii) no clear distinction between varieties based on linguistic features is possible, and iii) texts are also classified according to their degree of (non-)standardness within a given group that is otherwise more or less standard.
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
