This thesis aims to define the future of population statistics in Liberia by providing a roadmap on how Liberia could leverage on the experiences of other nations to transition from a traditional-based census to a combined approach. It is the view of the author that the Combined Census approach would not only improve the quality of population statistics in Liberia but is also a cost-saving method for Liberia, especially as a poor and underdeveloped nation.

Towards better gameplay in educational computer games: a PhD thesis

    No full text
There is currently a notable amount of research suggesting that educators should use computer games as part of their teaching. Most of this research suggests why games should be used choosing very specific example games, or making broad sweeping statements about gaming as a whole. But very little of the research explains how these games should be used. What features should be present in the game? Do these features change depending on a given learning outcome? Do they change depending on the type of game? This thesis begins by compiling a prospective set of required features for an educational game, taken from literature on Learning Environments, as well as the requirements of different learning styles. This requirement set is cross-referenced with an overview of some typical, commercially available games, to show that such games are capable of meeting these requirements. This preliminary list is used in two investigations: the first explores how well the chosen features are offered by a series of current educational mini-games; the second shows how different requirements are offered by different commercially-available computer game genres. The results of these investigations are used to refine the list, before carrying out a user survey to identify the important features offered by different game genres, and to determine whether game quality improves as more of the features are met. The survey results show that some key requirements separate the genres significantly, while others were consistent across all genres. In addition, there is a positive correlation between each feature offered, and the overall user enjoyment of the game. The thesis concludes with a proposed framework of game genres and features, to assist in the design and selection of games for a given educational scenario, as well as some suggestions for future work

    Multi-Objective Calibration For Agent-Based Models

    No full text
Agent-based modelling is already proving to be an immensely useful tool for scientific and industrial modelling applications. Whilst the building of such models will always be something between an art and a science, once a detailed model has been built, the process of parameter calibration should be performed as precisely as possible. This task is often made difficult by the proliferation of model parameters with non-linear interactions. In addition to this, these models generate a large number of outputs, and their ‘accuracy’ can be measured by many different, often conflicting, criteria. In this paper we demonstrate the use of multi-objective optimisation tools to calibrate just such an agent-based model. We use an agent-based model of a financial market as an exemplar and calibrate the model using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. The technique is automated and requires no explicit weighting of criteria prior to calibration. The final choice of parameter set can be made after calibration with the additional input of the domain expert

Rubanick v. Witco Chemical Corp. and Landrigan v. Celotex Corp.: The Admissibility of Expert Testimony in Toxic Tort Litigation

    No full text
In toxic tort litigation, plaintiffs must ordinarily establish causation through the use of expert testimony. This paper provides a discussion and analysis of the New Jersey Supreme Court\u27s decisions in Rubanick v. Witco Chemical Corp. and Landrigan v. Celotex Corp., which broaden the standard governing the admissibility of expert testimony in toxic tort litigation. The author begins with a discussion of the general acceptance standard and the cases leading up to Rubanick and Landrigan. Next, the author analyzes and discusses the Rubanick and Landrigan decisions, and the split between the federal circuits as to whether district courts should actively or passively review expert testimony. The author concludes by stating that other jurisdictions should follow the Rubanick and Landrigan holdings in determining the admissibility of scientific theories of causation in toxic tort litigation

Toward the end of his dissent in the Ninth Circuit’s en banc opinion in Garcia v. Google, Judge Alex Kozinski remarked that “[w]hen modern works, such as films or plays, are produced, contributors will often create separate, copyrightable works as part of the process.” Judge Kozinski’s characterization of plays (or even films) as “modern works” opens the door to an examination of that claim with respect to another genre of “modern work[]”: the photograph
