    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Acute effects of energy drink on the recovery of autonomous of heart rate after moderate aerobic exercise

    Introdução: A ingestão de bebidas energéticas (BE), conforme relatos na literatura, poderiam acarretar mudanças fisiológicas devido às suas características estimulantes, e assim seriam capazes de fornecer energia, melhorar a resistência, e o desempenho atlético. Diante disto, levanta-se a hipótese de que BE poderiam promover impacto significante na recuperação do sistema nervoso autônomo após uma sessão de exercício aeróbio submáximo. Objetivo: Verificar os efeitos agudos da ingestão de BE sobre o controle autonômico da frequência cardíaca (FC) na recuperação após uma sessão de exercício aeróbio submáximo. Método: O estudo foi realizado submetendo 29 homens saudáveis entre 18 e 30 anos a três protocolos: I)Teste de esforço máximo pelo protocolo de Bruce adaptado; II) Protocolo placebo (PP) - ingestão de água 15 minutos antes do exercício, repouso em decúbito dorsal durante 15 minutos seguido por 5 minutos de corrida na esteira com 1% de inclinação, velocidade inicial de 5 km/h por 5 minutos, posteriormente 25 minutos com 60% da velocidade correspondente ao consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max), e por fim 60 minutos de recuperação em repouso em decúbito dorsal; III) Protocolo experimental (PE) - semelhante ao PP, porém com ingestão de BE 15 minutos antes do exercício físico. Foram analisados antes e após o exercício os índices do domínio do tempo, da frequência e geométricos da variabilidade da FC (VFC). Resultados: Houve efeito significante (p<0,05) do momento sobre os índices da VFC (HF-nu e ms2, LF-nu e ms2, LF/HF, SD2, SDNN e RMSSD), indicando redução da VFC nos primeiros 5 minutos após o exercício em ambos os protocolos (PP e PE). No entanto, não foi observada interação de protocolos, indicando ausência de efeito da BE sobre a VFC durante a recuperação após exercício aeróbio submáximo. Conclusão: Não houve efeito significante de BE sobre o controle autonômico da FC na fase de recuperação após exercício aeróbio submáximo.Introduction: Energy drinks (ED) intake could lead to physiological changes due to its stimulant characteristics, and thus be able to provide energy, improve endurance and athletic performance. In view of this, the hypothesis is raised that ED could promote a significant impact on recovery of the autonomic nervous system after submaximal aerobic exercise. Objective: To verify the acute effects of ED ingestion on autonomic heart rate (HR) control recovery after a submaximal aerobic exercise session. Method: The study was performed by submitting 29 healthy men between 18 and 30 years old to three protocols: I) Maximum exercise test by the adapted Bruce protocol; II) Placebo protocol (PP) - water intake 15 minutes before exercise, rest in dorsal decubitus for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of treadmill running at 1% inclination, initial speed of 5 km / h for 5 minutes 25 minutes with 60% of the velocity corresponding to the maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), and finally 60 minutes of recovery in rest in the supine position; III) Experimental protocol (PE) - similar to PP, but with ED intake 15 minutes before physical exercise. The time, frequency and geometric indexes of HR variability (HRV) were analyzed before and after exercise. Results: There was a significant (p <0.05) effect of HRV index (HR-nu and ms2, LF-nu and ms2, LF / HF, SD2, SDNN and RMSSD), indicating a reduction in HRV in the first 5 minutes after exercise in both protocols (PP and PE). However, no interaction of protocols was observed, indicating no effect of BE on HRV during recovery after submaximal aerobic exercise.     Introdução: A suplementação com L-arginina tem sido amplamente estudada devido ao seu papel como precursora do óxido nítrico (ON), uma molécula fundamental para a regulação da vasodilatação, fluxo sanguíneo e modulação autonômica. Apesar de seu potencial, os efeitos agudos da suplementação de l-arginina na recuperação cardiovascular e autonômica após o exercício ainda não estão completamente esclarecidos. Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos agudos da suplementação de L-arginina sobre a recuperação cardiovascular e da modulação autonômica cardíaca após o exercício em homens saudáveis.. Métodos: Homens saudáveis entre 18 e 30 anos de idade foram submetidos a dois protocolos experimentais triplo-cegos e randomizados, com um intervalo de pelo menos 48 horas entre eles. Os participantes ingeriram 3g de Larginina (LARG) ou placebo (amido), em cápsulas idênticas. Após 60 minutos da ingestão, realizaram um teste físico em esteira, começando com 3 minutos de aquecimento (5 km/h) seguidos de incrementos de 1 km/h a cada 2 minutos, até atingir 80% da frequência cardíaca máxima estimada. Os dados de frequência cardíaca (FC), pressão arterial sistólica (PAS) e diastólica (PAD) foram coletados em momentos específicos (30 segundos e minutos: 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 e 20). A análise da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) incluiu índices lineares no domínio do tempo, como o desvio padrão da média dos intervalos entre batimentos (SDNN) e raiz quadrada da média dos quadrados das diferenças sucessivas (rMSSD), bem como no domínio da frequência, representados pelas bandas de baixa frequência (LF) e alta frequência (HF). Parâmetros autonômicos e cardiovasculares foram analisados em repouso, exercício e recuperação, fornecendo uma avaliação detalhada da modulação autonômica e respostas cardiovasculares. Resultados:. Em relação aos parâmetros cardiovasculares, não foram observados efeitos significativos entre os protocolos: FC (p = 0,499), PAS (p = 0,956) e PAD (p = 0,844). No entanto, observou-se no protocolo placebo uma recuperação mais lenta da modulação autonômica parassimpática (índices rMSSD e SD1) e da variabilidade global (SDNN, SD2 e LF ms2) em comparação com os valores basais (efeito de tempo, p = 0.001). Em relação à recuperação imediata após o exercício, não foram identificadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas na frequência cardíaca de recuperação (FCR) (p = 0,944), no índice rMSSD30'' (p = 0,562) e nas respostas da pressão arterial média (MAP) (p = 0,687) e da pressão de pulso (PP) (p = 0,929) entre os protocolos avaliados. Quando avaliado o período mais longo de recuperação, também não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os protocolos para os índices de VFC: SDNN (p = 0,955), RMSSD (p = 0,885), SD1 (p = 0,960), SD2 (p = 0,966), η²P = 0,001; LF (ms²) (p = 0,822), η²P = 0,001 e HF (ms²) (p = 0,267). Conclusão: Em síntese, os resultados deste estudo demonstraram que a suplementação aguda de L-arginina não influenciou significativamente as respostas de variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) e os parâmetros cardiovasculares entre os protocolos analisados. Contudo, a ingestão de L-arginina promoveu uma recuperação mais rápida da modulação vagal em comparação ao repouso. Esses achados devem ser interpretados com cautela, considerando a ausência de diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os protocolos e a possibilidade de que pequenas variações observadas não apresentem relevância clínica ou fisiológica.L-arginine supplementation has been widely studied due to its role as a precursor of nitric oxide (NO), a key molecule in the regulation of vasodilation, blood flow, and auto- nomic modulation. Despite its potential, the acute effects of L-arginine supplementation on cardiovascular and autonomic recovery after exercise are not yet fully understood. Objective: To evaluate the acute effects of L-arginine supplementation on cardiovascular recovery and cardiac autonomic modulation after exercise in healthy men, considering different physical ef- fort protocols. Methods: Healthy men between 18 and 30 years of age underwent two random- ized, triple-blind experimental protocols, with an interval of at least 48 hours between them. Participants ingested 3 g of L-arginine (L-ARG) or placebo (starch) in identical capsules. Sixty minutes after ingestion, they performed a physical test on a treadmill, starting with a 3-minute warm-up (5 km/h) followed by 1 km/h increments every 2 minutes, until reaching 80% of the estimated maximum heart rate. Heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) data were collected at specific time points (REC 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 20). The analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) included linear indices in the time domain, such as the standard deviation of the mean intervals between beats (SDNN) and the root mean square of successive differences (rMSSD), as well as in the frequency domain, represented by the Low-Frequency (LF) and High-Frequency (HF) bands. Autonomic and cardiovascular param- eters were analyzed at rest, exercise and recovery, providing a detailed assessment of autonomic modulation and cardiovascular responses. Results: When assessing the longer recovery period, no significant differences were found between the protocols for HRV indices: SDNN (p = 0.955), RMSSD (p = 0.885), SD1 (p = 0.960), SD2 (p = 0.966), η²P = 0.001; LF (ms²) (p = 0.822), η²P = 0.001, and HF (ms²) (p = 0.267). The same was observed for cardiovascular pa- rameters, with no significant effects between the protocols: HR (p = 0.499), SBP (p = 0.956), and DBP (p = 0.844). However, it was observed that in the placebo protocol, there was a slower recovery of parasympathetic autonomic modulation (rMSSD and SD1 indices) and global var- iability (SDNN, SD2, and LF ms²) compared to baseline values (time effect, p = 0.001). Re- garding immediate recovery after exercise, no statistically significant differences were identi- fied in heart rate recovery (HRR) (p = 0.944), the rMSSD30'' index (p = 0.562), and the re- sponses of mean arterial pressure (MAP) (p = 0.687) and pulse pressure (PP) (p = 0.929) be- tween the evaluated protocols. Conclusion: In summary, the results of this study demonstrated that acute L-arginine supplementation did not significantly influence heart rate variability (HRV) responses and cardiovascular parameters among the protocols analyzed. However, L-arginine intake promoted a faster recovery of vagal modulation compared to rest.     We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
