No full textInternational audienceDuring the 19th century, European cities witnessed a unique cohabitation between animals and artists in the context of artistic creation. This dimension, often neglected by urban history and art history, reveals the importance of living things in the artistic economy and in the very configuration of the city. Animals used for artistic purposes, whether acquired, rented or loaned to serve as models, have played an essential role in transforming both urban space and artistic practices. Through transnational examples, this article highlights the tensions and contradictions linked to the use of animals in the artistic and urban context.Au cours du XIXe siècle, les villes européennes ont été le théâtre d’une cohabitation singulière entre les animaux et les artistes dans le cadre de la création artistique. Cette dimension, souvent négligée par l’histoire urbaine et l’histoire de l’art, révèle l’importance du vivant dans l’économie artistique et dans la configuration même de la cité. Les animaux à usages artistiques, qu’ils soient acquis, loués ou prêtés pour servir de modèles, ont joué un rôle essentiel, transformant à la fois l’espace urbain et les pratiques artistiques. À travers des exemples transnationaux, cet article met en lumière les tensions et les contradictions liées à l’utilisation des animaux dans le contexte artistique et urbain
