Argenti di Sardegna. La produzione di argenti lavorati in Sardegna dal Medioevo al primo Ottocento

    No full text
This book is the result of the joint work of two art historians. It is an artistic–historical, wide ranging synthesis of the Sardinian artistic silver works, from the Middle Ages to the first years of the XIX century. It also examines the influence by importation models and it is the result of a wide research in Sardinian archives. The study of papers shows an extensive diffusion of silver manufactures and of their use in ecclesiastical environment and in various social classes. Moreover it is evident the role of clients in the making of the most important works. Sardinian productions of silver works of art is part of a wide scope of cultural influence and trade in the Mediterranean area and in Europe. From an analysis of a large remaining production it is possible to notice stylistic influences from the Iberian area, Provence, Northern Europe and from several Italian regions, such as: Piedmont, Tuscany, Latium, Campania and Sicily. Such variety of artistic expressions is due to political and economic relations, import and to an active and stimulating work of foreign craftsmen, from the above-named areas, working in Sardinia. With his broad range of iconographic topics, this book intends to fill a historiographic gap and to present a clear and accessible classification of silver products made in Sardinia, classified into periods, authors, styles and typologies. This volume addresses to scholars, collectors, antique dealers and lovers of art

How hormonal contraceptives shape brain and behavior: A review of preclinical studies

    No full text
Steroid hormones influence different aspects of brain function, including development, neurogenesis, neuronal excitability, and plasticity, thus affecting emotional states, cognition, sociality, and reward. In women, their levels fluctuate across the lifespan and through the reproductive stages but are also altered by exogenous administration of hormonal contraceptives (HC). HC are widely used by women throughout their fertile life both for contraceptive and therapeutic benefits. However, awareness of their effects on brain function and behavior is still poorly appreciated, despite the emerging evidence of their action at the level of the central nervous system. Here, we summarize results obtained in preclinical studies, mostly conducted in intact female rodents, aimed at investigating the neurobiological effects of HC. HC can alter neuroactive hormones, neurotransmitters, neuro-peptides, as well as emotional states, cognition, social and sexual behaviors. Animal studies provide insights into the neurobiological effects of HC with the aim to improve women's health and well-being

Effects of Various Stripping Techniques on Surface Enamel

    No full text
A great deal of clinical evidence and reported data suggest that the burs used to reduce interproximal enamel create furrows and scratches that can lead to carious lesions, periodontal disease, and oversensitivity to extreme temperatures. 1 Studies conducted on fragments of intraoral enamel have shown that the size and particularly the depth of these furrows can have a significant effect on remineralization and thus on the formation of demineralizing lesions.2 The more numerous and deep the lesions, the higher the risk that they will be carious. The present study was intended to assess surface changes in enamel caused by treatment with various stripping and finishing technique

Performance and Characteristics of Aerobic Granular Sludge Degrading 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol at Different Volumetric Organic Loading Rates

    No full text
Aerobic granular sludge represents a promising option for the treatment of wastewater contaminated by 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). Nevertheless, the need for high volumetric organic loading rates (vOLR) still constitutes a practical drawback, since the supply of an external carbon source for the treatment of low-strength industrial wastewater would imply significant costs at full-scale. This study investigates the possibility to sustain 2,4,6-TCP degrading aerobic granules with low vOLR, preserving long-term process performance. Sodium acetate was used as external carbon source for aerobic granules degrading 2,4,6-TCP (20 mg/L), and its concentration in the influent was progressively reduced from 1000 to 420 mg/L. The effects on process performance, granule properties and microbial population dynamics were investigated: complete 2,4,6-TCP removal was maintained, specific removal rates increased from 2.2 ± 0.5 to 4.3 ± 0.4 mg 2,4,6-TCP/g VSS per hour (mg2,4,6-TCP/gVSS· h) and a shift of granule diameter toward smallest size fractions occurred. Moreover, the qualitative evaluation of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) inclusions in microbial cells suggested their active role in 2,4,6-TCP degradation. The results showed that for low-strength wastewater containing toxic substances like 2,4,6-TCP, high concentrations of the external carbon source are required during the process start-up, but not in the long-term operation, thus reducing the operating costs significantly without compromising process performance: this represents an important step toward process scale-up
