The concept of Audience Development: between theory and practise

    No full text
Wydział Antropologii i KulturoznawstwaW obliczu współczesnych rynkowych, technologicznych i społecznych uwarunkowań sektora kultury rośnie istota „zwracania się” w działaniach ku publiczności. Zakłada ona strategiczne i kompleksowe podejście do zagadnienia budowania relacji z publicznością. There is a visible rise of what one could call an audience-oriented focus pressed by today’s cultural sector market, technological and social circumstances. In reaction to that, organizations willing to fulfil their mission have to search for new methods of communications and management. For many, the answer to the most important challenges faced by cultural organizations in the 21st century can be found in the concept of Audience Development. It implies a strategic and complex approach towards the issue of building relationships with audiences. The aim of the thesis is to conduct a critical analysis of the given concept. As part of reaching this goal the concept of Audience Development is to be introduced and put into theoretical framework that it does not have in spite of its high popularity. An important component of the paper relates to the ways cultural offer organisers adapt to the actual determinants of participation. The obtained knowledge leads to explore the potential of Audience Development and assess the discussed concept’s level of originality with regard to the already existing theories and practices. The selected phenomena included in the analysis of the problem are: marketisation of culture, development of new media and forms of today’s communication

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Cultural sector in Poland after 1989 is much more than ever before working under conditions of free market economy. It is not anymore ruled or dominated by public institutions like cultural centres, theatres, philharmonic halls, public libraries or heritage institutions, museums. The field of individual expressions and creative consumption of culture in Poland is inhabited by new, varied types of organizations, that are considered now as a part of growing sector of creative and cultural industries. Are cultural sector professionals prepared for such a change? Is a new shape of the sector, more free market oriented, looks like their natural work environment? Are they able to adjust their institutions and organizations to that change, and beat the competition with global players, who are used to provide their cultural offers in the framework of free market economy? The text is taking into consideration mentioned questions and brings deeper insight into tools of professional managerial and entrepreneurial education, accessible in Poland for culture sector employees and cultural entrepreneurship future leaders. Do young cultural managers in Poland, after a change of 1989, have proper instruments to keep the balance, when walking through the space operated by free market economy, when offering cultural goods to very diversed and demanding consumers? There is a doubt if they are not more like unsecured equilibrists. This study is based on diagnosis done with an expert group, who are pointing places and organizations offering best access to managerial and entrepreneurial professionalization for cultural sector people in Poland

New venues of Cultural Institutions in Poland — the Perspective of Local Cultural Ecosystems

    No full text
Building new venues for cultural activity involves a shift in the balance of power in the entire system of relations in the local communities of authors and organisers. This is a matter of budget and, very often, also of cultural policy priorities. Furthermore, it entails a significant change in the long-term funding of cultural initiatives and cultural entities in each region. The phenomenon of the emergence of many new cultural facilities has inspired a few fundamental questions about their attitudes to selected values in the field of sustainable development goals, particularly in the social and economic dimensions, but ultimately also of the impact of new cultural venues on the natural environment. Are the new investments in culture opportunities, challenges, or perhaps threats resulting from the rescaled or disturbed balance in local cultural ecosystems? The theoretical perspective, which organises the debate on these areas, takes the cultural ecosystem as a key concept, using it as a basis for the description of phenomena in local urban communities. The observations presented are based on the qualitative and quantitative research conducted in eight cultural institutions in eight Polish cities. The results reveal the importance of between ten and twenty fundamental dimensions of the activity of cultural institutions and their local government organisers which allow them to put down their roots more deeply in the city’s cultural ecosystem. A new building opens completely new possibilities, but it is extremely important to tailor the institution to the real, sagaciously assessed, and well-balanced possibilities of the local ecosystem

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
