Efficient Algorithms for Counting Gapped Palindromes

    No full text
A gapped palindrome is a string uvu^{R}, where u^{R} represents the reverse of string u. In this paper we show three efficient algorithms for counting the occurrences of gapped palindromes in a given string S of length N. First, we present a solution in O(N) time for counting all gapped palindromes without additional constraints. Then, in the case where the length of v is constrained to be in an interval [g, G], we show an algorithm with running time O(N log N). Finally, we show an algorithm in O(N log² N) time for a more general case where we count gapped palindromes uvu^{R}, where u^{R} starts at position i with g(i) ≤ v ≤ G(i), for all positions i

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning using Centralized Critics in Collaborative Environments

    No full text
Agents trained through single-agent reinforcement learning methods such as self-play can provide a good level of performance in multi-agent settings and even in fully cooperative environments. However, most of the time, training multiple agents together using single-agent self-play yields poor results as each agent tries to learn how to perform their task while their teammates are also learning. Thus, training models to reach an optimal behaviour in such situations becomes a challenging, if not impossible issue to overcome. One possible solution to deal with this problem is to facilitate a centralized training process in which the policies of all agents are evaluated by a centralized critic that has access to the observations and actions of all the agents in the environment. By using this approach, the environment becomes stationary and the agents learn in a similar way to using a single-agent algorithm in settings where only one agent needs to be trained. In this paper, we test whether by using a multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm with centralized critics, as opposed to single-agent ones, we would obtain an agent that generalizes better to new partners in a collaborative environment such as Overcooked, where coordination is critical for good performance. The results display a similar performance between the two algorithms when evaluated through self-play and slightly better or worse results when paired with the human model, representing a mediocre agent, depending on the map. Thus, the multi-agent, centralized critics algorithm used in this study did not train agents that generalize better to new partners. However, the training metrics clearly indicate that the centralized critics method makes the agents learn and converge twice as fast as its single-agent version.https://github.com/andrei-07/rp-overcooked-centralized-critics Link to GitHub repositoryCSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin

POPA, Andrei. Circular economy as a strategy of regional and local development =Economia circulară ca strategie de dezvoltare regională și locală. În: Strategii şi politici de management în economia contemporană [Resursă electronică]: conf. şt. intern., ediţia a 7-a, 9-10 iunie 2022. Chişinău: ASEM, 2022, pp. 178-187. ISBN 978-9975-147-65-1 (PDF).The processes of circular economy are based on reusing and recycling of sources, materials and products in order to ensure three-dimensional sustainable development - ecosystem (natural capital), economic (product and financial capital), human well-being (social and human capital). At the same time, the objectives of a circular economy developing mast be incorporated not only in national and sectorial strategies, but also transposed into the objectives of local and regional development’ strategies. It aims the involvement of the product life cycle’ actors - extractors and suppliers of raw materials, designers, manufacturers, distributors, consumers and managers of reuse and recycling processes - to be part of the decision-making process. In such vision, the effect of the circular economy will result from the meeting of “bottom-up” initiatives (specific actions involving local organizations seeking synergy with partners at the same level or wishing to expand or diversify their activities) with “top-down” approaches (planning and coordination to facilitate links between lower level entities). This paper summarizes the vision of the European Union about the future development based on circular economy’ principles, which must be taken by the Republic of Moldova policy makers on the way to the integration of the national economy in the Common European Area. Translatability of life‐extending pharmacological treatments between different species

    No full text
Abstract Anti‐aging research has made significant strides in identifying treatments capable of extending lifespan across a range of organisms, from simple invertebrates to mammals. This review showcases the current state of anti‐aging interventions, highlighting the lifespan extensions observed in animal models through various treatments and the challenges encountered in translating these findings to humans. Despite promising results in lower organisms, the translation of anti‐aging treatments to human applications presents a considerable challenge. This discrepancy can be attributed to the increasing complexity of biological systems, species‐specific metabolic and genetic differences, and the redundancy of metabolic pathways linked to longevity. Our review focuses on analyzing these challenges, offering insights into the efficacy of anti‐aging mechanisms across species and identifying key barriers to their translation into human treatments. By synthesizing current knowledge and identifying gaps in translatability, this review aims to underscore the importance of advancing these therapies for human benefit. Bridging this gap is essential to assess the potential of such treatments in extending the human healthspan.Funder: European Commission https://doi.org/10.13039/501100000780Funder: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft https://doi.org/10.13039/50110000165
