Epidemiology of Paget's disease in Europe: the prevalence is decreasing

This study estimated changes in the age- and sex-specific prevalence of Paget’s disease of bone in six European towns over a 20-year period. Declines in prevalence were observed in this disorder, occurring among both men and women.Introduction: To estimate secular changes in the age-and sex-specific prevalence of Paget’s disease of bone in Europe, we conducted a second radiographic survey using identical sampling and methods in six European towns where a baseline study was performed in 1978–1979. In addition to these towns, the survey was carried out in two Hungarian centers not included in the initial study.Materials and Methods: In each center, a sample of abdominal radiographs of people 55 years of age was taken from stored films within the radiology department of the principal general hospital. Radiographs showing the entire pelvis, sacrum, femoral heads, and lumbar vertebrae were studied for the period of 2000–2001. The films were evaluated by a trained observer and a consultant radiologist. Results: A total of 6935 radiographs (3512 women and 3423 men) were assessed in the eight towns. The overall age- and sex-standardized prevalence rate of Paget’s disease was 0.3% with a male/female ratio of 1.5. Prevalence increased with age among men and women rising to 0.8% of men and 0.9% of women 85 years of age. The differences in prevalence rate among the European centers were relatively small, especially in women. There was a decline in rates between 1978/79 and 2000/01.Conclusions: These European data confirm the decrease in frequency of Paget’s disease observed in Britain. These declines favor an environmental contribution to the causation of the disease that requires further researc

Sperner type theorems with excluded subposets

    No full text
Let F be a family of subsets of an n-element set. Sperner's theorem says that if there is no inclusion among the members of F then the largest family under this condition is the one containing all ⌊ frac(n, 2) ⌋-element subsets. The present paper surveys certain generalizations of this theorem. The maximum size of F is to be found under the condition that a certain configuration is excluded. The configuration here is always described by inclusions. More formally, let P be a poset. The maximum size of a family F which does not contain P as a (not-necessarily induced) subposet is denoted by La (n, P). The paper is based on a lecture of the author at the Jubilee Conference on Discrete Mathematics [Banasthali University, January 11-13, 2009], but it was somewhat updated in December 2010. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The author contrasts artistic recitals of Anna örök (Anna is forever), a poem by 20th century Hungarian poet Gyula Juhász (1883-1937). The principled subject of her analysis is the change of rhythm (from iambic to trochaic and vice versa) with regard to enjambment; specifically she examines how the written form is realized in the acoustic form of five reciters' performance

After the sudden death of the primary author of this paper, Gyula János Horváth (1961-2019), the lepidopterologist working around the Szigetköz and Győr his collection has been bought by the Rippl-Rónai Museum (Kaposvár). The documentation of this unpublished research was chosen from his written legacy. It contains significant data and information for the fauna of the Szigetköz. The post-editing and modification was carried out by the secondary author. The primary author publishes the results of his research focusing on nocturnal Micro- and Macrolepdioptera, that was carried out in 2004 around Holt-Rába, next to Győr-Gyirmót. Altogether 532 species were collected, 157 of Micro- and 375 of Macrolepidoptera, respectively. The more valueable and rare species are Cosmopterix orichalcea, Atremaea lonchoptera, Friedlanderia cicatricella, Arenosthola semicana, amongst some protected ones (Ostrinia palustralis, Euplagia quadripunctaria, Catocala fraxini, Xestia sexstrigata)

In the 18th and 19th century several glasshouses operated in the forests of Zselic region. One of the most significant ones was in operation between 1799 and 1888 in Németlukafa. The equipment of the faience manufacture, which was working side by side with the glasshouse, was bought by the Zsolnay family of Pécs in the 1850’s and became the first machine line of their factory. The manuscript of the monograph written on the topic by Gyula J. Horváth has disappeared around the time of his death (2003). The present study attempts to save the valuable notes as were left in his heritage and completes it with knowledge of the author

Krúdy Gyula ismeretlen szövegközlései a Szigeti Sétákban = Unknown Publications by Krúdy Gyula in the Szigeti Séták

In 1921, while he had been in the opposition and going through financial struggles, Krúdy Gyula was given the opportunity to edit a journal. Six issues of the Szigeti Séták (‘Island Walks’) were published with the support of Margaret Island Spa, which then terminated the relationship due to very few copies sold. The last issue was published by the author himself. The journal was not very different from the so-called one-man journals (written and edited by the same author) of the period. The short run of the journal proves that Krúdy’s network of contacts did not completely disintegrate after the repression following the Hungarian Soviet Republic. This paper briefly summarizes the history of the launch of the journal, the list of contributors and the traces of Krúdy’s involvement in writing and editing that are known today. As an editor Krúdy published new texts under different pseudonyms and also republished older texts. With the research method of examining textual similarities the paper also intends to provide a compilation of texts that were created by Krúdy. The paper contains the full list of his different kind of texts in Szigeti Séták

The extreme weather conditions caused by the climate change have strong impact on the everyday life of people. This study aims to analyse the changes in the life quality of those who live in the villages and towns affected by the 2001 floods in north-east Hungary. The study is based on statistical data and a survey conducted in nine settlements of the afflicted area. The floods had strong impact on the built environment and on local communities as well. According to our results, the majority of locals have experienced the negative effects of floods and had their homes ruined or damaged. The respondents experienced flood-related migration in the studied area and their impression was that mainly poor and unemployed people inmigration to the studied area
