Exercise induced bronchospasm and chlorine in swimming pools
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 47-57).The purpose of this thesis was firstly to review the possible relationship between chlorine in swimming pool water and exercise induced bronchospasm, and secondly to assess whether chlorine exposure during swimming provokes EIB in well-trained swimmers with and without a history of EIB
Isotone Optimization in R: Pool-Adjacent-Violators Algorithm (PAVA) and Active Set Methods
In this paper we give a general framework for isotone optimization. First we discuss a generalized version of the pool-adjacent-violators algorithm (PAVA) to minimize a separable convex function with simple chain constraints. Besides of general convex functions we extend existing PAVA implementations in terms of observation weights, approaches for tie handling, and responses from repeated measurement designs. Since isotone optimization problems can be formulated as convex programming problems with linear constraints we then develop a primal active set method to solve such problem. This methodology is applied on specific loss functions relevant in statistics. Both approaches are implemented in the R package isotone. (authors' abstract
An unknown self-portrait study of Jan Matejko (in a red cap) from a private collection in Warszawa
The self-portrait of Jan Matejko, described in the article, is actually a double-sided painting. A sketch for the portrait of General Dobrzański has been preserved on the reverse. For over one hundred years, the painting has been hanging on one and the same wall in the family apartment of a well-known collector who purchased the canvas. Master Jan’s authorship was based merely on family tradition passed down for three generations. The author of the article took upon himself the onerous task of confirming the alleged attribution, using the comparative historic method. The recently conducted laboratory examination in the conservation workshop of the National Museum in Krakow, which revealed the faded signature JM, additionally confirmed his erudite and astute observations
Differences in balance control despite self-reported resolution of pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain. A cross-sectional study
Background: Motor control patterns are altered when women with pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PGP) experience pain. In low back pain, these adaptations can persist after recovery. Objectives: This study aimed to assess balance control in postpartum women with and without a history of PGP during pregnancy. Design: Cross-sectional study. Method: Eighteen postpartum women who reported to be recovered from PGP, and twelve postpartum women without a history of PGP during pregnancy performed two clinical tests: the single leg stance and active straight leg raise test. Primary outcomes were ground reaction forces measured with a force platform. Results: Multiple linear regression analyses showed smaller lateral displacement (β = −11cm; 95%CI: 19 to −3; p = 0.008) and lower displacement velocity of the Centre of Pressure (COP) (Ratio of Geometric Means (RGM) 0.76; 95%CI: 0.59 to 0.99; p = 0.043) during single leg stance in the participants with a history of PGP compared to participants without a history of PGP. Push-off force (β = −4.8 N; 95%CI: 22.0 to 12.5; p = 0.57) and asymmetry of push-off force (RGM 1.77; 95%CI: 0.62 to 5.04; p = 0.27) did not differ between groups. During the active straight leg raise test, no differences in lateral displacement (β = 3 cm; 95%CI: 3 to 8; p = 0.30) and COP displacement velocity (RGM 1.03; 95%CI: 0.70 to 1.52; p = 0.87) were observed. Conclusions: Although the women with a history of PGP considered themselves recovered, their balance control during single leg stance was poorer compared to those without a history of PGP. No differences were found during the active straight leg raise test

Plant dispersal in a lowland stream in relation to occurrence and three specific life-history traits of the species in the species pool
1 The diversity and abundance of viable diaspores trapped at the downstream end of a 15-km lowland stream were quantified and related to five potentially predicting variables: species' occurrence in the species pool, distance to the nearest stand and the life-history traits seed buoyancy, seed production and plant height. 2 From 126 samples, 106 614 individuals of vascular plants developed, 95.8% from vegetative diaspores and 4.2% from seeds. Among these plants, three free-floating, 12 submerged, 22 emergent ( aquatic) and 70 riparian (semi-aquatic and terrestrial) species were recorded, respectively, accounting for 24.3%, 71.9%, 1.2% and 2.6% of the total number of viable diaspores trapped. 3 Of the free-floating, submerged and emergent species, 100%, 98.9% and 23.7% of the diaspores were vegetative, respectively, whereas it was 2.9% for riparian species. 4 Diaspores of 79% of the total number of aquatic species and 40% of riparian species observed in the established vegetation were trapped. Minimal dispersal distances ranged from 0 to 6 km. 5 Multiple regression analysis conducted for submerged species, showed that 71% of the variation in the diaspore pool could be predicted by occurrence of species in the vegetation. For emergent species, seed production and occurrence of species explained 54% of the variation, seed production being most important. Mean seed buoyancy of emergent species was higher than that of the other groups. For riparian species, seed production, occurrence and buoyancy explained 48% of the variation in the diaspore pool. Seed production per plant was the most important variable. Linear regression revealed a negative relationship between distance and abundance of the diaspore pool for submerged and riparian species. 6 We conclude that the occurrence of species in the species pool is a significant predictor for the dispersal of free-floating and submerged aquatics that rely on vegetative propagation. Seed production and buoyancy are of additional importance with regard to emergent aquatics. Riparian species with a limited terrestrial dispersal capacity may largely extend their range by hydrochory. That is, if they produce large amounts of ( small) seeds and provided that these can reach the water body. Buoyancy and high frequency and abundance in the established vegetation promote this dispersal capacity as well

Parasyntax and the sentential level in axiomatic functionalism
This thesis is presented as a contribution to the St Andrews School
of Linguistics, Axiomatic Functionalism, as developed by Mulder and
Hervey. It is essentially a piece of Theoretical Linguistics which
outlines an approach to the hitherto undeveloped areas of Parasyntax
and the Sentential Level in Axiomatic Functionalism.
The theoretical arguments are supported by descriptive hypotheses
concerning the nature of Spoken English. These descriptions are
corpus-based.
The conclusion reached by the author is that not only are Parasyntax
and the Sentential Level distinct in theory (this is axiomatic), but
they are also distinct in their application as regards methodology
and description. This conclusion will undoubtedly prove to be
controversial in the light of recent developments in Axiomatic
Functionalism concerning the Postulates in particular (of which the
author was at the time of writing unaware), and in the light of
other Functionalist approaches to the nature of intonation and
sentences.
It is anticipated that this thesis will be of value to those
interested in Functionalism as well as those concerned with
intonation and the levels of language beyond syntax
