    Elastic properties of boron nitride nanotubes and their comparison with carbon nanotubes

    Boron Nitride Nanotubes (BNNTs) have alternating boron and nitrogen atoms in graphite like network and are strongly polar in nature due to a large charge on boron and nitrogen atoms. Hence electrostatic interactions are expected to play an important role in determining the elastic properties of BNNTs. In the absence of specific partial atomic charge information for boron and nitrogen, we have studied the elastic properties BNNTs varying the partial atomic charges on boron and nitrogen. We have computed Young modulus (Y) and Shear modulus (G) of BNNT as a function of the tube radius and number of walls using molecular mechanics calculation. Our calculation shows that Young modulus of BNNTs increases with increase in magnitude of the partial atomic charge on B and N and can be larger than the Young modulus of CNTs of same radius. This is in contrast to the earlier finding that CNTs has the largest tensile strength (PRL, 80, 4502, 1998). Shear modulus, on the other hand depends weakly on the magnitude of partial atomic charge and is less than the shear modulus of the CNT. The values obtained for Young modulus and Shear modulus are in excellent agreement with the available experimental results

    Ultrafast switching time and third order nonlinear coefficients of microwave treated single walled carbon nanotube suspensions

    Microwave treated water soluble and amide functionalized single walled carbon nanotubes have been investigated using femtosecond degenerate pump-probe and nonlinear transmission experiments. The time resolved differential transmission using 75 femtosecond pulse with the central wavelength of 790 nm shows a bi-exponential ultrafast photo-bleaching with time constants of 160 fs (130 fs) and 920 fs (300 fs) for water soluble (amide functionalized) nanotubes. Open and closed aperture z-scans show saturation absorption and positive (negative) nonlinear refraction for water soluble (amide functionalized) nanotubes. Two photon absorption coefficient, β0 ~ 250 cm/GW (650 cm/GW) and nonlinear index, γ ~ 15 cm2/pW (-30 cm2/pW) are obtained from the theoretical fit in the saturation limit to the data for two types of nanotubes

    The ‘American Burns’: Author-function, antislavery, and William Wells Brown’s The American Fugitive

    More than one author was labelled the ‘American Burns’ in the nineteenth-century. This article explores these constructions through the post-structuralist theory of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault. Drawing on Foucault’s ‘author-function’, where the author as a person is replaced by the malleable discourse that surrounds his work, it proceeds to examine a largely neglected text in studies of Burns in relation to US abolitionism: William Wells Brown’s The American Fugitive in Europe: Sketches of Places and People Abroad (1855). In doing so, the article demonstrates the ways in which Brown uses Burns’s name to bolster his own antislavery discourse in a travelogue which was predominantly aimed at his American readership.</p
