The food and feeding of powan Coregonus lavaretus (L.) (Salmonidae: Coregoninae) in two Scottish lochs
The present study is mainly a descriptive account of the food and
feeding of the two Scottish powan populations from Loch Lomond and
Loch Eck. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons of powan diet are
made. Seasonal variations of diet are determined for the two
populations and some aspects of the planktivorous feeding of adult
pawan in Loch Lomond are examined. The partitioning of the ingested
energy into somatic and non-somatic growth is considered. Factors
affecting the feeding of the two populations are discussed
Sexual dimorphism in diaphyseal cross-sectional shape in the Medieval Muslim population of Écija, Spain and Anglo-Saxon Great Chesterford, UK
Differences in adult male and female activity patterns may influence levels of sexual dimorphism in physical dimensions, including the cross-sectional shape of long bone diaphyses. Previous studies of archaeological populations have demonstrated significant differences in diaphyseal shape between males and females. In this study, dimorphism in external diaphyseal shape of upper and lower limb bones (reflected in indices of external diaphyseal diameters), and bilateral asymmetry in these indices, were examined in two medieval populations: Muslim Écija (Spain) and Anglo-Saxon Great Chesterford (UK). Attempts were made to relate observed patterns to documentary and other osteological evidence for differences in male and female activity patterns. While few significant differences in upper limb bone cross-sectional shape were observed in either population, significant differences in shape were found in the lower limb diaphyses at Écija at the femoral midshaft and tibial foramen and midshaft levels, and at the tibial midshaft for Great Chesterford. Comparison with published data suggests that these differences are marked for Écija, and perhaps fairly high for Great Chesterford compared with other populations with an agriculture-based economy. This is consistent with documentary and osteological evidence suggesting marked gender differences in behaviour in medieval Muslim Spain. No significant differences in bilateral asymmetry were found, but the effects of small sample size cannot be ruled out

Learning peer review: Is jumping into the “deep end” the best approach?
Peer review is the essence of scholarship, embodying unique disciplinary expertise and the altruism to painstakingly enhance a manuscript for an anonymous author. In fact, peer review has been termed “a gift of uncompensated time from scientists to whom time is a precious commodity” (Scott-Lichter & Editorial Policy Committee, 2012, p. 5). Peer review is a learned skill evolving as scholars and clinicians become comfortable in their “professional skins.” And, like all learned skills, peer review must begin somewhere, with novice skills preceding expertise. Given the critical nature of peer review to advance disciplinary art and science, it is remarkable that formal education in this area is largely absent

Fluroxypyr-resistant kochia [Bassia scoparia (L.) A.J. Scott] confirmed in Alberta
Recent confirmation of dicamba-resistant kochia [Bassia scoparia (L.) A.J. Scott] in Alberta warrants investigation of resistance to other commonly used synthetic auxin herbicides like fluroxypyr. A randomized-stratified survey of 305 sites in Alberta was conducted in 2017 to determine the status of fluroxypyr-resistant kochia. Overall, 13% of the kochia populations were fluroxypyr-resistant. Only 4% of the populations were both fluroxypyr- and dicamba-resistant, indicating that different mechanisms may confer resistance to these herbicides. When combined with estimates of dicamba resistance, about 28% of kochia populations sampled in Alberta in 2017 were resistant to at least one synthetic auxin herbicide. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page.
